Harper promoted to director at Dartmouth

Dartmouth has elevated JoAnn Harper to director of athletics and recreation. She becomes the first woman to hold the post at the school and in the Ivy Group.

Harper came to Dartmouth as head women's lacrosse coach in 1981. She accepted additional responsibilities as assistant director of athletics for intercollegiate programs in 1987 before being promoted to associate athletics director in 1990. Harper continued to serve as head lacrosse coach until relinquishing those duties in June 1992. In 11 seasons, Harper guided the program to Ivy Group championships in 1986 and 1987. Since 1999, she has been senior associate athletics director.

Harper, who formerly coached at Hollins and Penncrest (Pennsylvania) High School, is a graduate of West Chester. She succeeds the retiring Richard G. Jaeger at Dartmouth.

Hiram named Tom Mulligan as athletics director ... Steve Hurlbut resigned as athletics director at Fairleigh Dickinson to become an associate commissioner with the Atlantic 10 Conference. Hurlbut has served as athletics director since July 1998 ... Ball State named Dick Falls as interim athletics director ... Herman Frazier, athletics director at Alabama-Birmingham, was hired as athletics director at Hawaii to replace the retiring Hugh Yoshida. Frazier, a 1976 U.S. Olympic gold medalist, has been vice-president of the U.S. Olympic Committee since 1996 and will retain those responsibilities. Watson Brown, head football coach at Alabama-Birmingham since 1995, assumed additional responsibilities as interim athletics director. ... Paul Griffin resigned as athletics director at Arkansas State. Griffin has led the athletics department since December 2001.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATOR

Melissa A. Bruner was named as senior woman administrator, assistant athletics director and head women's basketball coach at Coe. For seven years, Bruner has worked as director of women's basketball operations at Wisconsin.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Merchant Marine promoted Michael Smolens to associate athletics director for internal operations and elevated Charles Lang to associate athletics director for finance and operations. Smolens, who has been an assistant athletics director for 10 years, will continue as head men's soccer coach, a position he has held for 12 years. Lang has been an athletics administrator with the school for four years ... Bill Lansden was selected as associate athletics director for fund-raising and marketing at Middle Tennessee ... St. Francis (Pennsylvania) elevated Erika Renwick to associate director of athletics ... Bill Mecca was appointed as senior associate athletics director at Quinnipiac.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Tom Gill was elevated to assistant athletics director for facilities at Merchant Marine. Gill has been head lacrosse coach at the school for 12 years and will retain head coaching duties ... Scott Hobbs was selected as assistant director of athletics for compliance at Maine. Hobbs fulfilled the position on an interim basis during the 2001-02 academic year ... Tracy Kirk was promoted to assistant athletics director for events administration at George Mason. Kirk has been with the school since 1997 and has been manager of game operations since September 1999.

COACHES

Baseball -- Dallas Baptist hired Todd Guilliams as head coach ... Keith LeClair resigned as head coach at East Carolina ... Mark Woodworth was appointed as head coach at Wesleyan (Connecticut) after serving as interim head coach during the 2002 season ... Mark Mancuso was hired as head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan to succeed Rudy Stoehr, who resigned. Mancuso formerly was an assistant at Bellevue University ... Dave Van Horn was chosen as head coach at Arkansas, succeeding Norm DeBriyn. Van Horn, a former player and graduate assistant coach at Arkansas, has most recently been head coach at Nebraska ... Florida Tech added Paul Knight as head coach. For the past six years, Knight has worked as associate head coach at Wingate.

Baseball assistant -- Rich Drennen was named as an assistant coach at Wingate to replace Paul Knight. Drennen has been a graduate assistant coach and head junior varsity coach at the school since 1998.

Men's basketball -- Delaware Valley appointed Bill Dooley as head coach to succeed Bob Simmons. Dooley formerly was head coach with the program from 1998 to 2000 ... Thad Matta signed a two-year contract extension through 2010 as head coach at Xavier ... Minnesota State-Moorhead's Mike Olson resigned as head coach to become an assistant coach at Dartmouth ... Todd Lickliter, head coach at Butler, was awarded a contract extension through the end of the 2006-07 season after serving as head coach of the program since May 2001 ... Eastern Connecticut State awarded head coaching duties to Bill Geitner. Geitner, who succeeds Barry Davis, has been an assistant at Loyola (Maryland) for two seasons.

Men's basketball assistants -- Dartmouth added Matt Allen as an assistant coach ... Concordia-St. Paul chose Ryan Freeberg as an assistant coach, and Mike Albo as a graduate assistant coach ... Kareem Richardson and Stephen Brough were named as assistant coaches at Wright State ... Sam Weaver was hired as an assistant at Mississippi State. Weaver formerly was head coach at Alcorn State, Northern Iowa and was an assistant at Iowa State ... Chris Bohlen assumed responsibilities as director of men's basketball operations at Evansville ... Shepherd named Tim Redding as an assistant coach. Redding, who replaces Marcus Kahn, has been a men's basketball intern at Virginia Commonwealth ... Women's basketball -- Norwich appointed Steve Lanpher as head coach ... Missouri-Rolla appointed Alan Eads as head coach. For the past eight seasons, Eads has worked as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State. Eads replaces Linda Roberts ... Regina Miller, head coach at UNLV, signed a three-year contract extension through 2004-05. Miller has led the program since 1998 ... Dayna Smith was hired as head coach at Cornell. Smith, who has been an assistant at Pennsylvania for three seasons, succeeds Marnie Dacko ... Susan Yow was hired as head coach at Providence to replace Jim Jabir. Yow spent from 1997 to 2001 as an assistant coach in the WNBA and most recently has served as a radio color analyst for North Carolina State women's basketball contests ... Francis Marion appointed Valecia E. Tedder as head coach. Tedder, who succeeds Lee Buchanan, was an assistant boys' varsity coach (2001-02) and recently had been named as head girls' varsity coach for the 2002-03 season at Mount Juilet Christian Academy.

Women's basketball assistants -- Christopher Leazier was chosen as an assistant coach at Dartmouth ... Albany (New York) named Val Klopfer as an assistant coach ... Minnesota hired Danielle O'Banion as an assistant. O'Banion has spent the past season as an assistant at Harvard ... Roscelle Bullock was awarded assistant coaching duties at Louisville ... Memphis selected Jennifer Hoover as an assistant coach ... Tom Lewis was named as an assistant at Rutgers ... UC Santa Barbara selected Carter Shaw as an assistant ... Loyola Marymount appointed Janae Hubbard as an assistant coach. Gross been coaching at University City (California) High School for four years, two seasons as an assistant and the past two years as head coach ... Lamar selected Taqueta Roberson as an assistant. For three years, Roberson has served as an assistant at Mesquite (Texas) High School. The school also announced that Jason Martens will continue as a graduate assistant coach with the team.

Men's and women's cross country -- Jeff Pigg accepted responsibilities as head coach at Florida.

Field hockey -- Misericordia's MaryKate Madden resigned as head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach ... Washington (Maryland) promoted Rachel Wilmet to co-head coach. Wilmet, an assistant for the past two seasons, will become sole head coach after the 2002 season, taking over for Sarah Feyerherm. Feyerherm, who has been head coach for nine seasons, will assume duties as director of student development programs at the school and will continue as senior woman administrator.

Field hockey assistant -- Katie Richardson was hired as an assistant at Washington (Maryland).

Football -- Savannah State named Ken Pettiford as head coach ... Hal Mumme was hired as head coach at Southeastern Louisiana. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition in 2003 after being discontinued since 1985. Mumme was head coach at Kentucky from 1997 to 2000 and formerly was head coach at Iowa Wesleyan College and Valdosta State.

Football assistants -- Jamil Jackson was elevated to defensive coordinator at New Jersey City. Jackson has been an assistant at the school since February 2001 and will continue as linebackers coach ... Slippery Rock added Dwayne Martin as linebackers coach. Martin, who replaces Shawn Rohrer, has been an assistant at Wesley and West Virginia Tech ... Bridgewater State named Jeff Lane as linebackers coach ... Ikaika Malloe was hired as defensive line coach at Western Illinois. Malloe most recently has been coaching at Washington ... Mike Collins was elevated to assistant head coach at Louisiana-Monroe. Collins, who has been with the program since 1998, will continue as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Minnesota promoted interim head coach Brad James to head men's coach. James takes over for John Means, who resigned ... Don Morris was chosen as head coach at Union ... Andrew Sapp was appointed as head men's coach at Michigan ... Saint Rose appointed Aaron Bloch as head men's golf coach. Bloch succeeds Alan Huckins.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Scott Owens, head men's coach at Colorado College, signed a five-year contract through the 2006-07 season. Owens has been head coach for three seasons.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Scott Borek was appointed as associate men's coach at New Hampshire ... Bowling Green hired Ron Fogarty as an assistant coach ... Paul Colontino resigned as an assistant women's coach at Mercyhurst.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Stephania Samaras was awarded duties as head women's coach at Quinnipiac ... Graham Niemi was hired as defensive coordinator and Jon Fellows was chosen as an assistant coach at Washington (Maryland) ... Rick McCarthy retired after seven years as part-time head men's coach at Eastern Connecticut State. McCarthy has guided the team to two straight appearances in the NCAA Division III championship tournament.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Penn chose Julia Shaner as an assistant women's coach.

Women's rowing -- George Mason appointed Paul Rassam as head women's coach to succeed Elena Bratichko. Since April, Rassam has worked as interim head coach and has been an assistant with the program since November 2000 ... Maren LaLiberty was selected as head women's open-weight coach at Wisconsin, effective August 1. LaLiberty has been head women's lightweight coach at the school for three years and replaces Mary Browning.

Women's rowing assistant -- UCLA hired Bill Zack as an assistant women's coach.

Men's soccer -- Eric Watson was chosen as head men's and women's coach at Linfield ... Plymouth State added Rob Wright as head men's coach.

Men's soccer assistant -- Merchant Marine selected Adam Smith as an assistant coach and assistant academic coordinator.

Women's soccer -- Mick Lyon assumed duties as head coach at Indiana ... Julie Davis was named as head coach at VMI. The program is scheduled to begin Division I varsity competition in the fall of 2004. Davis, who replaces Emilie McCombs, has been an assistant at Arkansas for three years ... Christopher Case was promoted to head women's soccer and head lacrosse coach. Last season, Case worked as an assistant for both programs.

Women's soccer assistants -- Megan Ramey was chosen as an assistant at Washington (Maryland) ... Jennifer Altherr accepted duties as an assistant coach at Northwestern ... Minnesota added Ellen Obleman as an assistant coach. During the 2001 season, Obleman was a volunteer assistant at Illinois and formerly was an assistant at Georgia, Kansas and Kentucky.

Softball -- Lipscomb named Andy Lane as head coach ... Kristin Cox was awarded responsibilities as head coach at Truman. Cox, who takes over for interim head coach Kristi Bredbenner, has been an assistant at Charlotte since 2000.

Softball assistant -- Megan Smith was added as an assistant at Charlotte. Smith has spent the past two years as head coach at Young Harris College.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- UC Irvine's Charlie Schober relinquished head men's and women's coaching duties to become director of aquatics at the school. Schober has guided the men's program for 22 years and the women's squad for 18 seasons ... Keith Murray was hired as aquatics coordinator and head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Saint Rose. For the past two years, Murray, who replaces Alan Huckins, has worked as a part-time assistant with the programs.

Men's and women's tennis -- Jill Beilke was hired as head men's and women's coach at Concordia (Illinois). Beilke, a 2002 graduate of the school, replaces Tony Wittman ... Alma's Bob Harrison resigned after serving as head men's coach since 1998 ... Chrissy Short was chosen as head women's coach at Albany (New York). Most recently, Short, a former assistant at Ohio State, has been a part-time tennis instructor at Capital Region Tennis and Fitness.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- South Alabama chose Zlatko Stupavsky as an assistant women's coach. Stupavsky completed his playing career with the school this spring and earned recognition as the Peach Belt Conference tournament's most outstanding player.

Men's and women's track and field -- Capital chose Fred Barends as head men's and women's coach ... UNLV will not renew the contract of Karen Dennis, head women's coach. Dennis guided the program for 10 years.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Louisiana-Lafayette elevated Lance Veazey to head coach ... Stevie Keller was named as an assistant men's and women's coach at North Dakota State. Since 2000, Keller has been a graduate assistant coach for both programs at the school.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Don Giardina and Qingyi Zheng were released as assistant women's coaches at UNLV.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Eastern Oregon awarded Ryan Platt with duties as head women's coach ... Darrell Schoenl resigned as head women's coach at St. John Fisher ... Washington (Maryland) hired Carter LeBrocq as head coach ... Westfield State head women's coach Hilary Ducharme resigned ... Ed Grassl was chosen as head coach at Sonoma State to succeed Jon Stevenson. Grassl has been head coach at El Moline (California) High School for 10 years.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Indiana State named Carmen Walker and Megan Stephenson as assistant coaches, replacing Peyton Peterson and Todd Nelson. Walker has been head men's coach at Southampton for one season and Stephenson most recently completed her volleyball eligibility at Illinois State ... Kelly Spencer was selected as an assistant women's coach at Lamar ... Kelley Welcenbach was appointed as an assistant at Washington (Maryland) ... Meggan Kohnen was added as an assistant women's coach at Northwestern.

Wrestling -- Robert Marshall, head coach at Delaware Valley, announced retirement plans. Marshall guided the program to 10 Middle Atlantic Conference championships in 28 years.

Wrestling assistants -- Oregon State selected Les Gutches as an assistant coach ... Army appointed Eric Douglas as an assistant.

STAFF

Athletic trainers -- Ed Orr was chosen as head athletic trainer at Bowling Green. For the last seven years, Orr has worked as head athletic trainer at Arizona ... Dale Rudd was selected as head athletic trainer at California. Rudd, who has been an athletic trainer and rehabilitation specialist at El Dorado Physical Therapy, formerly was head athletic trainer at Stanford, assistant athletics director and head athletic trainer at UCLA and head athletic trainer at Pepperdine ... India Lovett resigned after two years as head athletic trainer at Alma ... Northern Michigan named Jim Winkler as coordinator of athletic training to succeed Mark Stoessner. Winkler, who came to the school as an assistant athletic trainer in August 2001, has been fulfilling the coordinator position on an interim basis since November 2001.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Marcus Owens, Aaron Blum and Jen LaFalce were named as assistant athletic trainers at Washington (Maryland) ... Sherry Ann Miller was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at Angelo State. Miller has been head athletic trainer at Colorado City (Texas) High School for four years.

Equipment manager -- Merchant Marine's Heather Stone assumed additional responsibilities as athletics equipment manager. Stone has been head softball coach and events coordinator.

Facilities assistant -- Washington (Maryland) chose Carl Hobly as a fields assistant.

Marketing/promotions assistant -- Carrie McAlpine was named as athletics marketing intern at Delaware. McAlphine is a 2002 graduate of Washington State and spent two years as a marketing intern with the school.

Sports information -- Stony Brook appointed Jed Hurt as assistant director of media relations ... Liz Stojetz assumed responsibilities as director of sports information and women's assistant soccer coach at Pfeiffer ... Zac Underwood was selected as sports information director at West Texas A&M. Since August 2000, Underwood has been sports information coordinator at East Central University (Oklahoma). The school also announced that Paul Sweetgall, an assistant athletics director, will reliquish sports information responsibilities but will assume duties with ticketing services and retain the position of executive director of the WTAMU Buffalo Club.

Strength and conditioning -- Rob Livingstone was named as strength and conditioning coach at Jacksonville.

CONFERENCES

Milton E. Richards was named as president of the California Collegiate Athletic Association for the 2002-03 academic year. Richards, the athletics director at Cal State Stanislaus, was vice-president for the conference in 2001-02.

David L. Neilson was selected as interim commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, replacing Sheila Wallace Kovalchik. Currently, Neilson is vice-president and executive consultant for the Compass Group, a management consulting company.

The South Atlantic Conference announced Dennis Switzer was named director of sports administration and information, Laurie Leader was appointed as assistant to the commissioner for external operations and senior woman administrator, and Jonnie Schulte was chosen as assistant to the commissioner for internal operations and business manager. Switzer enters his third year with the conference and Leader enters her fourth year. Schulte has been with the South Atlantic Conference for 10 years.

ASSOCIATIONS

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) have named Joe Castiglione, director of athletics at Oklahoma, as president for 2002-03. The following also were elected for the 2002-03 term: Judy Rose, director of athletics at North Carolina-Charlotte, 1st vice-president; Gene DeFilippo, director of athletics at Boston College, 2nd vice-president; Tim Curley, director of athletics at Penn State, 3rd vice-president; and Tim Gleason, commissioner of the Ohio Athletic Conference, to the third year of a five-year term as secretary. Also, the following were elected to the Executive Committee: University Division representatives -- Rick Greenspan, athletics director at Army; Chris Hill, athletics director at Utah; Ted Leland, athletics director at Stanford; Bob Roller, athletics director at Samford; Tim Weiser, athletics director at Kansas State. College Division representatives -- Ed Farrington, athletics director at Western Connecticut State; Walter Johnson, athletics director at North Central; Eugene Marshall, athletics director at Ramapo; and Joan McDermott, athletics director at Metro State. Community College representative -- John Jackson, Dean College. REPRIMANDS

The NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee has reprimanded University of Maine, Orono, ice hockey player Peter Metcalf. Metcalf's behavior during the postgame press conference after the championship game April 6 in St. Paul, Minnesota, constituted misconduct. Specifically, Metcalf made comments that were critical of the officiating that occurred during the Men's Frozen Four championship game. According to Bylaw 31.1.10, members of the coaching staff or other representatives of participating institutions or conferences shall not make public statements critical of officiating in any NCAA championship event. The committee has issued a public reprimand of Metcalf and will withhold transportation and per diem expenses to Maine for Metcalf's participation in the Men's Frozen Four.

DEATHS

Mark Finney Scully, president emeritus at Southeast Missouri State, died May 25. He was 92.

Willie Davenport, a five-time U.S. Olympian, died of a heart attack June 17. He was 59. Davenport made appearances in the 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980 Games, capturing a gold medal and a bronze medal in the 110-meter hurdles. As a member of the 1980 U.S. bobsled team, Davenport, along with teammate Jeff Gradley, became the first black athletes to compete in a Winter Olympiad.

Michael Isenhour, a former basketball center at Georgia Tech, died of leukemia June 13. He was 23. Isenhour made appearances in 39 games in the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons before graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Bobby Roberts, former head men's basketball coach at Clemson, died June 22. Roberts, 74, coached the freshman squad for four seasons and served as head varsity coach from 1962 to 1970.

Former Georgia Tech football player Buck Martin died June 18. He was 73. Martin was part of the 1952 undefeated Georgia Tech team that captured the Southeastern Conference championship.

George E. Paterno, a former Penn State football broadcaster, died June 23, several days after suffering a heart attack. He was 73. Paterno began working Penn State football radio and television games in 1976 and retired before the 2000 season. He formerly was an assistant coach and spent nine years as head coach at Merchant Marine. Additionally, he served as an assistant athletics director and athletics director at the school. Paterno also spent two years as defensive coordinator at Michigan State.

Jay Berwanger, the first football Heisman Trophy winner, died of lung cancer June 26. He was 88. Berwanger, who competed at Chicago, captured the Downtown Athletic Club of New York award in 1936. The honor was renamed the John W. Heisman Memorial Award the following year. Berwanger also was the first player drafted by the NFL.
