Ponsetto and Slive appointed to new posts

Jean Lenti Ponsetto has been promoted to director of athletics at DePaul. Ponsetto succeeds William D. Bradshaw, who has been named athletics director at Temple.

Ponsetto, the current chair of the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, has spent her entire career at DePaul. For the past seven years, she has worked as senior associate athletics director. She also has fulfilled responsibilities as an assistant women's basketball coach, assistant athletics director and associate athletics director.

Ponsetto has served on the NCAA Division I Working Group to Study Men's and Women's Basketball Issues and on the Division I Budget and Television Committee. In recognition of her efforts, she was named as administrator of the year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in 1998. She also was chosen as national administrator of the year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators.

Ponsetto competed on the tennis, volleyball, women's basketball and softball teams as an undergraduate at DePaul before earning a bachelor's degree in physical education and health in 1978. She is pursuing a master's degree in public service administration from DePaul.

The Southeastern Conference has named Michael L. Slive as commissioner, effective August 1. Slive succeeds the retired Roy F. Kramer.

Slive has been the commissioner of Conference USA since its establishment in April 1995. He currently serves as chair of the Division I Infractions Appeals Committee and was a member of the Division I Management Council from 1997 to 2002. Additionally, Slive is president of the Collegiate Commissioners Association and was recently appointed by President Bush to the Commission on Athletic Opportunity, which will explore Title IX issues.

Slive formerly has been assistant athletics director at Dartmouth, assistant executive director of the Pacific-10 Conference and athletics director at Cornell.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth in 1962, a juris doctorate from Virginia in 1965 and an LLM from Georgetown in 1966.

Cleveland State named Tom Tontimonia as interim athletics director ... David Herbster was elevated to athletics director at Concordia-St. Paul to replace Dan O'Brien. Herbster was an associate athletics director at the school and has been serving as interim athletics director since June ... Rick Johnson resigned as athletics director and head men's basketball coach at St. Andrews. Johnson has been at the school since 1999 ... UC Irvine appointed Petrina Long as interim director of intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation. Long has been with the school since 1993 and most recently has been senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator ... JoAnn Harper, senior associate athletics director at Dartmouth since 1999, was elevated to director of athletics and recreation. Harper, who joined the school as head women's lacrosse coach in July 1981, replaces Richard G. Jaeger and is the first woman to serve in this post at the school ... Jerry McDonald was named as athletics director at Heidelberg to succeed John Hill. Scovron has been compliance and CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinator at Cleveland State since August 1998 ... Hilbert named Andrea Agnello as senior woman administrator, assistant athletics director and head women's basketball coach. Agnello has been an assistant basketball coach at Immaculata Academy ... Northern Arizona promoted Kelly Lloyd to associate athletics director and senior woman administrator ... Susan Delaney-Scheetz was elevated to senior woman administrator and associate athletics director at Penn State. Delaney-Scheetz, who succeeds the retired Ellen Perry, has been an assistant athletics director since 1989 ... Jo-Ann Nester was selected as senior woman administrator and associate athletics director at San Diego. For the past nine years, Nester has worked as associate athletics director at Dartmouth.

Pfeiffer named Chris Pollard as assistant athletics director for athletics fund-raising ... Rice named Jason Gray as assistant athletics director ... Penn State expanded the responsibilities of Mark Sherburne, assistant athletics director for student services, and promoted Jenn James to assistant athletics director. Sherburne has been in the student-athlete services area since 2000, after serving eight years as an academic counselor/football support services coordinator at the school's Morgan Academic Support LEFT for Student-Athletes. James has been an athletics operations assistant since 1995.

COACHES

Aquatics -- Whittier appointed Mitch Carty as aquatics coordinator. Carty, who has been part-time head men's water polo coach for four years, also will work as head women's water polo and head men's and women's swimming and diving coach.

Baseball -- Keith Kessinger was hired as head coach at Arkansas State. Kessinger, who replaces Bill Bethea, has spent the past two seasons as head coach at Carson-Newman ... East Carolina selected Randy Mazey as head coach ... Kansas appointed Ritch Price as head coach ... Wichita State awarded Gene Stephenson a five-year contract extension through June 30, 2008. During his 25-year tenure, Stephenson has captured a national championship in 1989 and has led squads to seven College World Series appearances ... Tim Corbin was hired as head coach at Vanderbilt to succeed Roy Mewbourne, who retired after 24 years. Corbin has been associate head coach at Clemson for nine years ... Richard Stockton named Marty Kavanagh as head coach. Kavanagh, who replaces John Gurzo and interim head coach George McDonnell, has been head coach at Cumberland County College for five seasons ... Jim Brownlee was added as head coach at Illinois State ... Westfield State's John Griffin resigned as head coach. Griffin has guided the program for four seasons ... Starbuck, a part-time assistant with the school for the past four seasons, takes over for Brendan Dougherty ... Jason Murray assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Michigan ... Men's basketball -- Minnesota-Moorhead selected Stu Engen as head coach ... Florida A&M head coach Mike Gillespie signed a contract extension through the 2005 season ... Keith Richard, head coach at Louisiana Tech, was awarded a two-year contract extension. Richard has led the program for four years ... Notre Dame's Mike Brey accepted a two-year contract extension through the 2008-09 season. Brey has been head coach at the school since July 2000 ... Men's and women's cross country assistant -- South Carolina-Spartanburg chose Tim Gibbons as an assistant coach.

Field hockey -- Barb Jordan was added as head field hockey and assistant women's lacrosse coach at Gettysburg ... Haverford's Anne Livezey will not return as head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach. Livezey guided the programs for five years ... Transylvania promoted Beth Lucas to head coach, replacing Alyssa Gates, who resigned after two seasons. Lucas has worked as an assistant coach since 1998.

Field hockey assistants -- Jill Meiring accepted additional responsibilities as assistant field hockey coach at Transylvania. Meiring, who replaces Beth Lucas, also serves as an assistant women's basketball coach ... Drexel named Nicky Hitchens as an assistant coach and named Jessica Reed as a graduate assistant coach ... James Madison chose Amanda Janney as an assistant.

Football -- West Georgia's Gary Otten resigned as head coach. Otten has been with the program for 13 years, serving as offensive line coach and offensive coordinator before accepting head coaching duties in January 2001. The school chose offensive coordinator Mike Ledford as interim head coach ... Mark Matlak was hired as head coach at Allegheny, replacing Blair Hrovat. Matlak has spent the past 18 seasons at New Hampshire, where he has been defensive coordinator since 1989 and associate head coach since 1999.

Football assistants -- Charley Partridge was tabbed as defensive line coach and Brian Flinn was named as an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois ... East Carolina hired Paul Jette as defensive backs coach ... Lafayette appointed Bruce Smith as defensive ends coach ... Charley Molnar accepted duties as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan ... Vince Okruch was chosen as defensive coordinator and Vance Joseph was chosen as defensive backs coach at Colorado. Okruch was co-defensive coordinator at the school with the late Tom McMahon, and Joseph has been secondary coach at Wyoming since April ... Worcester Polytechnic added Harry Armstrong as running backs coach, Jon Dupont as outside linebackers coach and Jason Martin as defensive line coach ... Broadwater, who replaces Gerald Runey, has spent the past two years as head women's coach at the school ... Melissa Arthur-Ringler was hired as head women's coach at UNLV. Arthur-Ringler has been head women's coach at Minnesota since 1999.

Men's and women's gymnastics -- Cari DuBois was tabbed as head women's coach at California.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Massachusetts-Boston named Jack Foley as head men's coach ... Jason Lesteberg was selected as head women's coach at St. Cloud State ... Quinnipiac's Amanda Adams resigned as head women's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Sean McCann was named as an assistant coach at Harvard ... Rob Haberbusch accepted duties as an assistant coach at Iona.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Pace named John Jez as head men's coach. For the past five seasons, Jez, who replaces Frank Vitolo, has worked as an assistant with the program ... Kellie Young accepted responsibilities as head women's coach at James Madison, replacing Jennifer Ulehla, who resigned after eight seasons. Young has been an assistant at Georgetown for four years ... Dave Schaller was chosen as head men's coach at Whittier to replace Doug Locker. Schaller also will serve as an assistant men's soccer coach ... Megan Stevens was named as head women's coach at Buffalo State. Stevens also will assume duties as CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinator and assist with fitness LEFT operations ... Greg Zecca resigned as head men's coach at Haverford to accept duties as athletics director at The Calverton School (Maryland). Zecca has been head coach for nine seasons.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Wingate added Sonny Ziegler as assistant men's head coach and defensive coordinator. Most recently, Ziegler has coached at St. Andrews and Maryland.

Women's rowing -- David Reischman was named as head men's coach at Syracuse. For the past eight seasons, Reischman, who takes over for Bill Sanford, has been head coach at Oregon State ... Kelly Babraj and Zenon Babraj resigned as head men's and women's coaches at Hobart/
William Smith to assume responsibilities as head women's coach and director of women's rowing, respectively, at Southern California. The Babrajs have been at Hobart/William Smith since the 1999-00 academic year.

Women's rowing assistants -- Virginia hired Joel Furtek as head women's coach. Furtek, formerly an assistant with the program from 1992 to 1997, has spent the past five years as head women's coach at North Carolina ... Marsa Deniel was appointed as an assistant women's coach at Williams. Deniel was an assistant at Western Washington during the past academic year and currently is coaching at the Cape Cod Rowing Club.

Men's soccer -- Austin Daniels resigned as head men's and women's coach at Mercyhurst ... Keith Byrnes was named as head coach at Frostburg State to replace Jay Hegeman, who resigned after 16 seasons. For the past two years, Byrnes has been head coach at Plymouth State ... Carlo Acquista was hired as head coach at St. Francis (New York). Acquista has been an assistant at Hofstra.

Men's soccer assistants -- Calvin selected Chris Hughes as an assistant. Hughes, who succeeds David VerMerris, has been junior varsity coach at the school for eight years ... Steve Seargeant resigned as an assistant coach at Oakland.

Women's soccer -- Buffalo State hired Nick DeMarsh as head coach. DeMarsh has spent the past three seasons as an assistant with the men's team at the school ... Illinois chose Janet Rayfield as head coach ... Andrew Hetherington was awarded responsibilities as head coach at George Fox ... St. Joseph's (New York) named Joseph Lee as head coach.

Women's soccer assistants -- Mohammed Ali El-Zare was awarded duties as an assistant coach at South Alabama ... Emily Blackerby was named as an assistant coach at Sonoma State. Blackerby replaces Deena Schneider, who resigned ... Daniel Brizard was selected as an assistant coach at Florida International ... Krista McKendree and Allie Rogosheske were added as assistant coaches at Duquesne. McKendree and Rogosheske currently compete for the Memphis Mercury of the Women's Soccer W-League.

Softball -- Loyola (Illinois) elevated Jamie Gillies to head coach to replace Stephenie Henderson, who resigned after three seasons as head coach. Gillies has worked as an assistant with the program for two seasons ... Frostburg tabbed Chris Starke as head coach. Softball assistants -- Karin Wick was hired as an assistant coach at Ball State to succeed Brenda Schrader. Wick has been head softball coach at Niles North (Illinois) High School for seven seasons and assistant cross country coach there for three seasons ... Michigan State added Stephenie Henderson and Amanda Scott as assistant coaches. Henderson led the program at Loyola (Illinois) to two regular-season Horizon League championships in three seasons as head coach. For the past year, Scott has been serving as an editorial and production intern at the Women's Sports Foundation.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Gwynn Evans Harrison resigned as head women's coach at James Madison.

Men's and women's tennis -- Towson's Tom Meinhardt announced plans to retire as head men's coach. The school appointed Peter Walten as Meinhardt's successor ... Steve Courtemanche was chosen as head men's and women's coach at Massachusetts-Boston ... Megan Payne-Dorny was appointed as head women's coach at Utah. Payne-Dorny spent the 2000-01 season as a volunteer assistant and last season as a full-time assistant with the program ... Jon Choboy resigned as head men's coach at Brown ... Ken Birkett was hired as head men's coach at Franklin & Marshall to succeed the retired Alan Koth. Birkett, who formerly was head men's coach at the school for seven seasons, has been director of tennis at Lancaster (Pennsylvania) Country Club since 2001 and instructor of tennis and badminton at Harrisburg Area Community College since 1991 ... Southern Mississippi added Randy Rowley as head women's coach. Most recently, Rowley has worked as an assistant men's coach at Texas Tech ... Coppin State appointed Brendon Travis as head men's and women's coach. Travis, who has been head men's and women's coach at East Stroudsburg during the past season, replaces Derrick McMillian ... Gigi Fernandez was hired as head women's coach at South Florida to succeed Sherry Bedingfield, who retired after 23 seasons. Fernandez, who has been head coach of the Puerto Rican National Team since 1999, captured 17 Grand Slam doubles championships as a professional and two Olympic medals ... Southern Indiana selected Ross Brown as head men's coach to replace Jon Mark Hall. For the past 11 years, Brown has been head men's coach at Evansville.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Tennessee promoted Chris Mahony to associate head men's coach. Mahony has been assistant men's tennis coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Washington's Orin Richburg resigned as head men's and women's coach. Richburg has been with the school for 17 years ... Dena Reif was hired as head women's track and field and cross country coach at Virginia Commonwealth. Reif, who has been head cross country coach at Southern Mississippi for three seasons and assistant track and field coach for the past five years, succeeds interim head coach Todd Morgan and former head coach Mia Pollard ... Steve Rainbolt was awarded a three-year contract extension through June 2006 as head coach at Wichita State. Rainbolt was named as the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference men's coach of the year.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Indiana State named Angie Martin as assistant men's and women's coach. Martin, who has been coaching at Lawrence North (Indiana) High School, replaces Kirk Wrightsman.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Cornell College added Jeff Meeker as head women's coach. Meeker, who succeeds Shannon Staton, was an assistant men's coach at St. Ambrose from 1999 to 2002 ... New Paltz State selected Matthew Giufre as head women's coach ... Stephen Cribbin resigned as head women's coach at Massachusetts-Boston ... Kelley Sliva resigned as head women's coach at Northern Arizona ... Dominican (New York) named Jessica Gallaway as head women's coach ... Jim Haney will not return as head women's coach at Haverford. Haney has led the program since 1997 ... Bloomfield head women's coach Tony Fontenelle resigned ... Sean Holden was appointed as head women's coach at St. Joseph's (New York) ... UC Irvine selected John Speraw as head men's coach to succeed Charlie Brande, who will continue as head women's volleyball coach at the school. Last year, de Abreu, who replaces Christine Phillips, was a student assistant at Iowa ... Dominican (New York) chose Mike Carroll as an assistant women's coach ... Rachel Wulff was selected as an assistant coach at Dayton ... Northern Colorado added Lori Willadsen as an assistant coach.

Wrestling -- Delaware Valley added Brandon Totten as head coach to succeed Robert Marshall. Totten, a Division III national champion at the school in 1995 and 1996, spent last year as head coach at Middlesex County (New Jersey) College and formerly was head assistant at Seton Hall for two years.

Wrestling assistant -- Clarion chose Jason Robison to succeed Tony Purler as an assistant. Robison served as an assistant at Brown during the 2001-02 season.

Administrative -- Marietta Rodriguez was selected as student services coordinator at Northern Arizona.

Academic services -- Northern Arizona appointed Tish Neuer as academic services coordinator ... Dartmouth hired Rob Morrissey as academic counselor/life skills coordinator.

Athletic trainers -- New England chose Christopher Rizzo as an athletic trainer ... Carlo Cantarella was named as head athletic trainer at Rhode Island College. Cantarella has been an athletic trainer with South County Orthopedics and Physical Therapy and formerly was head athletic trainer at Bryant.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Anita Boos and Marcus Ohnemus were added as assistant athletic trainers, and Tiffany Manley was added as an intern at Bradley. Boos has been head athletic trainer and senior woman administrator at Northland College for three years. Ohnemus has spent the past three years as head athletic trainer and a teacher at Mountain Ridge (Arizona) High School, and Manley is a May graduate of Chattanooga, where she earned a master of science degree in athletic training ... Jennifer Mead assumed duties as an assistant athletic trainer at Quinnipiac ... New England tabbed Tracy Spigelman and Benjamin Towne as assistant athletic trainers ... Wheaton (Massachusetts) hired Adam Eastwood as assistant athletic trainer, and Kristin Raffa was promoted to associate athletic trainer. For the past year, Raffa, who replaces Jennifer McMorran, has served as an assistant athletic trainer.

Compliance assistant -- Maggie McKinley was named as assistant compliance director at Cincinnati after fulfilling the post on an interim basis for six months.

Facilities -- Rice tabbed Mike Morgan as director of facilities.

Sports information -- Jeff Ventura was selected as full-time sports information director at Buffalo State. For the past year, Ventura has fulfilled the position on an interim basis ... Greg Murphy was appointed as sports information director at Colorado School of Mines ... St. Francis (New York) added Angela Merlino as director of sports information and marketing. Merlino has been with the New York City Board of Education division of information and instructional technology.

Sports information assistants -- Lori Haro was hired as a media relations assistant at California ... Lafayette appointed Alison Hischak and Michael Leflar as athletics communications graduate interns ... Craig Petulla was named as a sports information intern at Penn State. Petulla graduated from Slippery Rock in May with a bachelor of science in sport management ... LSU appointed Brian Miller as associate sports information director ... Michael Bertsch was added as assistant sports information director at North Carolina-Greensboro ... Loyola Marymount chose Scott Johnson as assistant sports information director ... Strength and conditioning -- Scott Austin resigned as strength and conditioning coach at Duquesne to fulfill similar duties at Jacksonville State ... North Carolina-Wilmington awarded strength and conditioning coaching duties to Jim Mayew.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- West Virginia named Jim Nowell as director of skill development for the weight program. For the past two years, Nowell has been assistant strength and conditioning coach at LSU.

CORRECTIONS

Some information regarding the awards for participants in NCAA Home Run Challenge was incorrectly listed in the June 24 issue of The NCAA News. Rawlings provides a two-year equipment and apparel contract to the winner of the Home Run Challenge, not to the winner's institution, and each participant's institution receives a $1,000 donation, not $10,000, from Rawlings to its general scholarship fund.

A caption in the July 8 NCAA News LEFTpiece incorrectly identified the father of 12-year-old Brendan McEneaney as Brian instead of Eamon.

A story about future regional sites in Division I men's hockey in the July 8 issue of The NCAA News should have listed Colorado College as the host of the 2004 West Regional at World Arena in Colorado Springs.

DEATHS

Doug Elmore, former all-Southeastern Conference quarterback at Mississippi, died June 28 at the age of 63. Elmore, who made appearances in two Sugar Bowls and one Cotton Bowl, was an all-conference LEFT fielder for the school. He spent one year as an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana before entering the insurance business in 1965.

Bob Meccage, an assistant coach at Trinity (Texas), died May 17. For the past three years, Meccage had worked as baseball pitching coach and assistant basketball coach at the school.

Leo F. Redfern, former president at Keene State, died May 31. Redfern was 78.

Jack Peckett, a former coach and athletics administrator at New York University, died July 7. He was 57. Peckett joined the school as head wrestling coach in 1975, a position he held for 11 years. In 1986, he was elevated to associate director for facilities. Peckett also served as an assistant professor of politics.

Hubert O. Clemmons, athletics director and former coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, died July 5. He was 77. Clemmons had been with the school for 56 years and had spent the last nine years as athletics director. He was head men's basketball coach at the school from 1956 to 1977 and also completed tenures as an assistant football coach and as an assistant professor in the department of health, physical education and recreation.

Dave Sorenson, former basketball player at Ohio State, died of cancer July 9. He was 54. Sorenson, a LEFT who led the Big Ten Conference in scoring and rebounding as a junior and senior, helped the team to the 1968 conference championship and an appearance in the 1968 Final Four.
