Dalis set to retire as UCLA athletics director

Peter T. Dalis, director of athletics at UCLA, has announced plans to retire, effective June 30. Dalis has guided the athletics department since 1983.

During his 19-year tenure, UCLA teams have earned 39 national championships and competed in 12 football bowl games. The school also has won 108 Pacific-10 Conference championships in that time. In addition to fulfilling athletics director duties, Dalis has been a member of the NCAA Special Events Committee and also has served as chair of the Pac-10's Television Committee.

Before assuming the athletics director post, Dalis was director of the school's cultural and recreational affairs department.

Dalis earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education with a concentration in administration at UCLA in 1959 in addition to working as a football manager for four years. He also earned a master's degree in education from the school in 1963.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Richard F. Celeste was named as president at Colorado College. Celeste formerly was U.S. ambassador to India and formerly was governor of Ohio ... Colgate appointed Rebecca S. Chopp as president, effective July 1. Chopp has been dean of the Yale Divinity School ... Florida A&M selected Fred Gainous as president. Gainous has been chancellor of the State of Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education ... Charles A. Hines announced plans to retire as president at Prairie View A&M, effective September 1. The school named Willie A. Tempton, vice-president for finance and administration at the school, as acting president ... Nebraska-Kearney appointed Doug Kristensen as chancellor. Kristensen has been a lawyer in Minden, Nebraska, and speaker of the Nebraska legislature ... Robert A. Altenkirch, vice-president for research at Mississippi State, was named as president at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Altenkirch succeeds Saul K. Fenster, who will retire after 24 years with the school.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Terry Don Phillips resigned as athletics director at Oklahoma State to accept the same responsibilities at Clemson. Phillips had fulfilled athletics director duties as Oklahoma State since October 1994 and replaces Bobby Robinson ... Shenandoah hired John D. Hill as athletics director to succeed John "Shep" Campbell. Hill has been Heidelberg's athletics director for 19 years and head men's basketball coach for 26 seasons ... Harry Birdwell was named as athletics director at Oklahoma State, effective July 1, to replace Terry Don Phillips. Since 1994, Birdwell has been vice-president for business and external relations at the school ... Kristen Ford resigned as director of athletics at Ithaca to become the school's director of special campaigns. Ford has been at Ithaca since 1986 and has been athletics director since February 2000 ... Joel Erdmann was hired as director of athletics at North Alabama. For the past four years, Erdmann has served as an assistant to the athletics director at South Alabama and also was the executive director of the Jaguar Athletic Club at the school in 2001-02 ... Don Doucette was hired as director of athletics and head men's basketball coach at Newbury. Doucette has been head coach at Central Missouri State ... Will Shaw announced plans to retire as athletics director at Davis & Elkins, effective August 1. Shaw, who has been athletics director since 1988, joined the school as head men's cross country coach in 1984 and will retain head coaching responsibilities.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Sue Scaffidi was promoted to senior woman administrator at Lenoir-Rhyne ... Elon named Faith Shearer as senior woman administrator. Shearer formerly had served as SWA at Johns Hopkins ... Tamlyn Tills was appointed as senior woman administrator and head women's basketball coach at Concordia (Illinois). Tills, who replaces Sarah Novak, has been head women's basketball coach at Loras for the past three seasons.

OF ATHLETICS

Wake Forest's Mike Pratapas resigned as associate athletics director for development ... Lenoir-Rhyne elevated Joe Smith to associate director of athletics ... Robert Steitz was appointed as senior associate athletics director for external operations at Villanova ... Bradley promoted Virnette House-Browning to senior associate athletics director, Craig Dahlquist to associate athletics director for finance and compliance, and Dennis Kalina to associate athletics director for external affairs. House-Browning, who also is the school's senior woman administrator, has been with the school for six years. Dahlquist has spent the past 18 years at the school as an athletics coach and administrator, and Kalina has been assistant athletics director for external affairs for four years ... Saint Mary's (California) elevated Mark Orr to associate director of athletics for student support services. Orr has been assistant athletics director for student support services ... Texas-San Antonio appointed Brad Parrott as associate athletics director for external affairs.

Stacy Warner was hired as assistant athletics director for facilities and event management at Trinity (Texas). Most recently, Warner has worked as an intern at the NCAA national office supporting the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships ... Newbury elevated Andrea Bertini to assistant athletics director. Bertini has been with the school since August 2001 serving as head women's basketball and head men's and women's tennis coach ... Scott Hobbs assumed responsibilities as assistant athletics director for compliance at Maine.

COACHES

Baseball -- Mars Hill chose Daniel Taylor as head coach. For the past six years, Taylor has been head coach at Frederick (Maryland) Community College ... Norm DeBriyn announced his retirement as head coach at Arkansas. In 33 seasons, DeBriyn has guided the program to four College World Series appearances and more than 1,100 career wins ... Greg Marten retired as head coach at Southeastern Louisiana ... Clark (Massachusetts) promoted Jason Falcon to full-time head coach. Falcon also accepted additional responsibilities as director of the Kneller Athletic Center and Bickman Fitness Center ... Mark Walsh resigned after 10 seasons as head coach at Aurora. Walsh will continue as athletics director at the school and will assume duties in the university advancement department ... Pittsburgh-Greensburg hired Joe Hill as head coach. Hill, who succeeds Mike Johnson, has been an assistant coach at Navy, College of Charleston, Pittsburgh and Duquesne ... Florida Southern elevated Pete Meyer to head coach to succeed the retired Chuck Anderson, who assumed duties as an associate athletics director at the school. Meyer, who has worked as interim head coach since April, has been the top assistant coach since joining the program in 1999.

Baseball assistants -- Charlotte appointed Bo Durkac as an assistant coach ... Chris Mongiardo was chosen as an assistant coach at Florida Southern ... Michigan chose John Lowery as an assistant coach ... Denis McLaughlin resigned as pitching coach at Fordham.

Men's basketball -- Armstrong Atlantic State hired Jeff Burkhamer as head coach. Burkhamer, who has been associate head coach at Marshall, succeeds John Marhefka ... Gregg Marshall, head coach at Winthrop, was awarded a three-year contract extension ... Tim Hills was hired as head coach at Western Oregon. For the past two years, Hills, who replaces Tom Kelly, has been head women's basketball coach at the school ... Dennis Csensits was awarded duties as head coach at Dickinson ... Slippery Rock appointed John Marhefka as head coach. Marhefka has been head coach at Armstrong Atlantic State ... Tiffin's Steve Fleming resigned as head coach ... Bento has spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Syracuse, most recently as associate head coach ... Delta State selected Sandra Rushing as head coach. Rushing, who succeeds Lloyd Clark, has been head coach at Henderson State ... Western Connecticut State hired Kimberly Rybczyk as head coach. Rybczyk, who served as head coach at Southwestern for one season, succeeds the retired Jody Rajcula ... Carla Berube was hired as head coach at Tufts to replace Janice Savitz, who retired. Berube has been an assistant at Providence for two years ... Cameron hired Dick Halterman as head coach. Women's basketball assistants -- Pepperdine selected Sarah Richen as an assistant coach ... Jacksonville named Lisa Diefenthaler as an assistant coach ... Melissa Kolbe and Brady Sallee were added as assistants at East Carolina ... Niesha Johnson was chosen as an assistant at Cal State Northridge. From 1999 to 2001, Johnson was a member of the WNBA's Charlotte Sting ... Elon appointed Michelle Katkowski as an assistant coach ... Karyn Karlin was named as an assistant at Liberty ... San Diego State added Nicole Anderson as an assistant coach ... Belmont appointed Clint Mason as an assistant ... Tennessee hired Nikki Caldwell as an assistant coach. Men's and women's cross country -- Gene Newman resigned after one year as head women's cross country coach and two seasons as head women's track and field coach at Richard Stockton. The school elevated Jason Capelli to head women's cross country coach. Capelli, who has served as a men's and women's assistant with the program for the past three seasons, also will work as assistant track and field coach ... Doug Hoover was named as head men's and women's coach at Penn State-Altoona. The programs are scheduled to begin competition in the fall of 2002. Hoover formerly was an assistant track and field coach at Juniata and was an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Saint Francis (Pennsylvania) ... Gary Aycock was elevated to head men's and women's coach at St. Andrews. Aycock, an assistant with the program last year, replaces Bobby Simmons, who became head baseball coach at the school.

Men's and women's cross country assistant -- Julius Aulisio accepted duties as an assistant coach at Florida Southern.

Field hockey -- Danya M. Pilgrim was awarded responsibilities as head field hockey coach and sports information manager at Bryn Mawr. Pilgrim formerly coached field hockey at Oswego State ... Beth Gottung was hired as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Montclair State. Gottung has been assistant field hockey and assistant women's lacrosse coach at Trinity (Connecticut) ... Bridgewater State's Nicole Castonguay resigned as head coach.

Field hockey assistants -- Megan McGuin was appointed as a graduate assistant coach at Utica. McGuin is a 2002 Delaware graduate, where she was a three-time field hockey letter-winner ... Albany (New York) selected Michelle Hinman as an assistant coach.

Football -- Blair Hrovat resigned as head coach at Allegheny. Hrovat has led the program since 1998.

Football assistants -- San Diego hired Jason DesJarlais as defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator. During the past season, DesJarlais, who replaces Bob Tompson, was defensive line coach at Bates ... Henny Hiemenz was named as wide receivers coach and Michael Pelletier was selected as graduate assistant defensive tackle coach at Utica. Hiemenz, who succeeds Jeff McNamara, has been running backs coach at Illinois Wesleyan for two seasons. Pelletier, who replaces Will Barry, is a 2002 graduate of Plymouth State, where he was a four-year letter-winner in football ... Pennsylvania added Andrew Christ as defensive assistant coach. Last season, Christ served as outside linebackers coach at Albany (New York) ... Joe Nemith was named as linebackers coach, special teams coach and recruiting coordinator. Merchant Marine added Shawn Daignault as defensive coordinator; Mark Conlon as running backs coach; Tim Kepple as linebackers coach, special teams coordinator and video coordinator; Drew Folmar as football quarterbacks coach and assistant baseball coach; and Will McCain as football defensive line coach and assistant track and field coach. Daignault has been an assistant at Trinity (Connecticut) for four seasons, and Conlon has worked as offensive line coach at Kean for two years. For the past three seasons, Kepple has served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at St. John's (New York), and Folmar spent the 2001 season as a student assistant coach at Millersville. Men's and women's golf -- Jan Mann was appointed as head women's coach at Virginia. The program is scheduled to begin competition in the fall of 2003. Mann, a member of the Division I Women's Golf Committee, has worked as head coach at North Carolina-Wilmington for the last eight seasons ... Mark Christensen resigned as head men's and women's coach at Quincy. The school promoted assistants Alex Eichman to head men's coach and Troy Conover to head women's coach ... Kim Kincer resigned as head women's coach at Methodist.

Men's and women's golf -- James Timmer was selected as head men's coach at Baldwin-Wallace ... Kentucky Wesleyan's Bryce Swafford resigned after one season as head women's golf and assistant women's basketball coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Cortland State chose Kim Hokanson as head women's coach. Hokanson has worked as interim head coach since 2000 ... Northern Michigan named Walt Kyle as head men's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- David Lassonde was promoted to associate head men's coach at New Hampshire.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Jenn Harpel resigned as head women's coach at La Salle ... Anna Marie Vesco resigned as head women's coach at Rutgers ... Rick McCarthy announced plans to retire as head men's coach at East Connecticut State.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Albany (New York) appointed Sarah Hughes as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's rifle -- Nebraska chose Launi Meili as head coach.

Men's soccer -- Calvin named Chris Hughes as head coach ... Franklin & Marshall's Andy Woolley resigned as head coach to become director of network development and physician services at Cogent Healthcare. Woolley has been head coach since 1999 ... Cameron Rast was promoted to head coach at Santa Clara to succeed Mitch Murray. Rast has been associate head coach ... Dan Dubois was named as head coach at Southern Vermont. Dubois, who was an assistant with the program during the 2001 season, replaces Mike Ryan ... St. Andrews added Tom Frambach as head coach to succeed Lance Watkins, who resigned after six years. For the past year, Frambach has been an assistant at East Stroudsburg.

Men's soccer assistants -- Albany (New York) named Rutger-Jan Bevers as an assistant coach ... Eric Yamamoto was elevated to full-time assistant coach at Santa Clara. Most recently, Yamamoto has served as men's and women's goalkeepers coach.

Women's soccer -- Utica appointed Jessica Critchlow as head women's soccer and head women's lacrosse coach. Critchlow, who replaces Azure Davey, has been an assistant at the school for the past year ... Eastern Nazarene hired Chris McLain as head coach to succeed Jason Barry.

Women's soccer assistants -- Mike Smith and Erin Hussey were named as assistant coaches at Santa Clara. Smith replaces Rich Manning, who resigned. Hussey has been an assistant at Northwestern.

Softball -- Karen Lee Matteson resigned as head coach at North Carolina-Greensboro. Matteson has guided the program since January 1, 2001 ... Oakland's Steve Ogg resigned as head coach ... Rob Wimsatt was hired as head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan ... Trisha Dean was promoted to head coach at Saint Mary's (California). Dean most recently has been interim head coach of the program ... North Dakota State elevated Darren Mueller to head coach to replace Mitch Hanson. During the 2002, Mueller led the squad to the North Central Conference and NCAA Division II North Central Region championships as interim head coach ... Melissa Jones was released as head coach at Pacific (Oregon).

Softball assistants -- Patricia Wimsatt was named as an assistant coach at Kentucky Wesleyan ... Delaware awarded assistant coaching duties to Lisa Myers to replace Kerrie Porter. Myers has been an education coordinator for the New Castle (Delaware) Police Athletic League.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Seth Huston resigned after eight years as head men's and women's coach at Truman to become head women's coach at Rice. Huston has led the women's program to two national championships in the past two years ... Brian Striker was hired as head men's and women's coach at Rochester Institute of Technology, succeeding Gary Mauks, who retired. From 1999-02, Striker was varsity coach at York Central School in New York ... Peter Casares was named as head coach and aquatics director at Wabash. Casares, who succeeds Gail Pebworth, has spent one season as an assistant and the past season as interim head coach at Kenyon.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Dina Dormer was chosen as an assistant coach at Villanova.

Men's and women's tennis -- Southern California hired Peter Smith as head men's coach to succeed Dick Leach, who retired in May after 23 years and who will continue with the school as director emeritus of men's tennis. Smith has served as head men's coach at Pepperdine for five years ... Dave Borelli was hired as head women's coach at Texas Christian to succeed Roland Ingram. Borelli formerly was head coach at Southern California for 14 years and led the school to seven national championships ... Pacific (Oregon) head men's and women's coach Alan Watts resigned ... Colgate named Martin Perry as head men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Richard Stockton promoted Barry Staton to head women's coach to succeed Gene Newman, who resigned. For the past season, Staton has been assistant men's and women's coach ... Chris Curtiss resigned as head men's track coach, football defensive coordinator, strength and conditioning coordinator, winter sports coordinator and exercise and health science instructor at Alma to become athletics director at Corunna (Michigan) High School ... Eastern Illinois appointed Mary Wallace as head women's coach ... Stefanie Kelly, women's track and field co-head coach at Minnesota State-Mankato, was reassigned to coordinator of marketing and promotions ... Mike Holloway was promoted to head coach at Florida, replacing Doug Brown, who will not have his contract renewed. Holloway spent four seasons as an assistant at the school and has spent the past three seasons as associate head coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Solomon Birir was awarded duties as an assistant track and cross country coach at South Alabama.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Bryn Mawr hired Joan Braid as head women's coach ... Michael P. Massone was named as head men's coach at New Jersey City to replace interim head coach Ofelia Pancarician. Massone has been assistant men's coach and recruiting coordinator with the program ... Eastern Nazarene hired Derek Schmitt as head women's coach ... Ofelia Pancarician was elevated to head women's coach at New Jersey City to succeed Peter Nguyen. Pancarician, who has been an assistant women's coach for the past two seasons, will relinquish duties as interim head men's coach at the school.

Men's and women's water polo -- Cal State Hayward selected Lisa De Rossi as head women's coach. De Rossi, who succeeds Katie Miller, formerly was volunteer head coach at the University of Western Australia ... Santa Clara hired Keith Wilbur as head men's and women's coach to succeed Steve Hanson.

Wrestling -- Doug Detrick accepted duties as head coach at James Madison ... Dan Hicks was hired as head coach at Cal State Fullerton. Hicks, who has been an assistant at Oregon State for the last five seasons, succeeds Ardeshir Asgari.

STAFF

Administrative -- Villanova elevated Steve Pinone to assistant to the director of athletics ... Tyler Fleming was named as coordinator of team support services at Towson, replacing Ed Franks, who resigned to accept responsibilities with the Bowie Baysox, a minor league baseball club. Fleming has been varsity sports assistant at Yale for the past year.

Athletic trainer -- St. Andrews chose Shelby Basinger as head athletic trainer. Most recently, Basinger has worked as a staff athletic trainer at Martin Bowen Hefley Knee and Sport in Arkansas.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Doug Padron was promoted to associate athletic trainer at Villanova.

Assistant equipment manager -- Villanova named Tom Dunphy as an assistant equipment manager.

Facilities assistants -- Derek Hillestad was chosen as assistant director of San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion. Hillestad has been a graduate assistant for sports facilities and recreation programs at Ball State for the past year ... Tom Carlson was named as assistant athletics facilities manager at Dartmouth.

Marketing/promotions -- Texas-Pan American selected Craig Pintens as athletics marketing coordinator. Pintens has been a marketing assistant at Marquette for the past year.

Recreation -- Janice Hayes was named as director of campus recreation to succeed David Gilmore. Most recently, Hayes has fulfilled duties as director of recreation operations and guest services at California.

Sports information assistants -- Merchant Marine appointed Mindy Brauer as assistant sports information director. For the past four years, Brauer has worked as a sports information student assistant at Drew, where she was a 2002 graduate ... Garry Bowman was hired as assistant sports information director at Kansas State. Bowman has spent the past three years as assistant director of media relations at San Diego State ... Portland named Julie Lapomarda as assistant sports information director.

Strength and conditioning assistants -- Brian K. Gabriel and John Cavanaugh were chosen as assistant strength and conditioning coaches at Columbia.

Ticket office -- San Diego appointed Tony Valle as the Jenny Craig Pavilion ticket manager. For the past two years, Valle has been assistant director for athletics ticketing and game management at Ohio State.

CONFERENCES

Jeffrey Mead and Angela Rioux were hired as communications assistants at the Big East Conference for the 2002-03 academic year. Mead is a 2002 graduate of Seton Hall, where he was a student assistant in the sports information office for three years. Rioux served as a student assistant in the Guilford sports information office and was an intern with the Women's Sports Foundation ... Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Commissioner Richard J. Ensor signed a contract extension through June 30, 2005. The conference also elevated Ashley Hotze to director of women's basketball operations, effective July 1 ... CORRECTIONS

Felipe Teixeira's new position at Edgewood was incorrectly listed in the June 10 edition of The NCAA Record. Teixeira was named as head women's tennis coach at the school.

The school at which Katie Moscowitz was chosen as interim head coach was inadvertently omitted from the June 10 edition of The NCAA Record. Moscowitz was named as interim head coach at Adams State.

In an article in the 50 years of NCAA staff insert in the June 10 NCAA News, the University of Missouri, Kansas City, was incorrectly referred to as the University of Kansas City, Missouri.

NOTABLES

Pat Henry and Curtis Frye were chosen as the 2002 Mondo men's and women's track coaches of the year for Division I by the United States Track Coaches Association. Henry guided LSU's men's team to its fourth team national championship this season, and Frye led the South Carolina women's squad to its first national championship.

Walter Davis and Angela Williams were named as the 2002 Mondo men's and women's track and field athletes of the year for Division I by the United States Track Coaches Association. Davis, a student-athlete at LSU, captured titles in the long jump, triple jump and the 4x100 relay. Williams, a student-athlete at Southern California, won her fourth straight 100-meter dash championship.

Stacey Nuveman was honored as the first winner of the Amateur Softball Association's USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. As a senior at UCLA, she helped the school win the 2002 Pacific-10 Conference title in addition to leading the nation in batting average (.529) and homeruns (20). The two other finalists for the award were Jennie Finch of Arizona and Natasha Watley of UCLA ... Finch was named as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate player in softball in 2002. Finch helped Arizona to an appearance in the national championship game of the 2002 Women's College World Series.

Angela Williams, a sprinter at Southern California, was named as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in track and field for 2002. Williams, a co-captain, captured her fourth straight NCAA championship in the 100-meter dash and also earned the 60-meter dash title.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association recognized Matias Boeker, a junior at Georgia and Bea Bielik, a junior at Wake Forest, as national players of the year. Boeker, the ITA national men's player of the year in 2001, captured the NCAA singles national championship for the second consecutive year. Bielik, the 2002 NCAA women's singles champion, and is a three-time ITA all-American.

Andrew Colombo and Marc Kovacs of Auburn and Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra of Stanford were chosen as the 2002 Intercollegiate Tennis Association national doubles teams of the year. Colombo, a freshman, and Kovacs, a senior, captured the NCAA men's doubles title this season. Kalvaria and Lastra, both seniors, won the women's doubles national championship.

Bea Bielik was named as the Honda Award winner as the top collegiate woman in the sport of tennis for 2002. Bielik, a junior at Wake Forest, won the NCAA singles championship and set a record for the fewest games lost in the tournament (21 in six matches).

DEATHS

Former Ohio head baseball coach Bob Wren died of cancer June 11. He was 81. Wren, who was head coach from 1949 to 1972, led the school to 11 Mid-American Conference championships and one College World Series appearance in 1970.

James Jenkins, a member of the San Jose State men's basketball team, died recently. Jenkins, 19, competed in 30 of 32 games for the school last season.

Bob Lackey, former men's basketball player at Marquette, died of cancer June 4. He was 53. Lackey made NCAA tournament appearances with the team in 1971 and 1972.

Tom McMahon, co-defensive coordinator at Colorado, died of cancer on June 9. McMahon, 53, had been at Colorado since 1999 and formerly coached at Wyoming, New Mexico, South Carolina, East Carolina, Arizona State, Wisconsin and Notre Dame. He was a two-time football letter-winner at receiver for Montana before graduating in 1971.

Former Nebraska head football coach, Bill Jennings, died of cancer June 8. He was 84. Jennings led Nebraska from 1957 to 1961 and also worked as an assistant at Oklahoma, where he was an all-American in football and a 1941 graduate, as well as at Kansas. After concluding his coaching tenures, he served as athletics director at Washburn.
