Wirnsberger hired as head wrestling coach

Bloomsburg has appointed Dan Wirnsberger as head wrestling coach.

Wirnsberger has spent the past six years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. Before accepting responsibilities there, he was a coach with the Mason (Michigan) Youth Wrestling Program. Wirnsberger also formerly was head wrestling coach at Greer (South Carolina) High School and junior varsity football coach and teacher at Greer Middle School.

Wirnsberger was a wrestling student-athlete in the 158-pound class at Michigan State from 1990 to 1995. The three-year team captain earned all-America recognition three times and also captured the 1995 Big Ten Conference title.

Medaille chose Joseph W. Bascuas as president, effective July 1. Bascuas has been vice-president at Argosy Education Group-Argosy University and campus president at Argosy University of Atlanta ... Mark L. Perkins resigned as president at Towson. The school appointed Dan L. Jones, provost and vice-president for learning at the school, to acting president ... Claudia A. Limbert was named as president at Mississippi University for Women, effective July 1. Limbert most recently has worked as campus executive officer at Penn State DuBois ... Southern Mississippi selected Shelby Thames as president. Thames has been a research professor of polymer science at the school ... Wagner selected Richard Guarasci as president, effective June 1, to succeed Norman Smith, who closes a 14-year tenure to become president of Richmond, The American International University in London. Guarasci has been provost and senior vice-president for academic affairs at the school for the past five years ... Brian M. Barefoot was selected as president at Babson after most recently serving as acting president at the school ... UC Riverside appointed France A. Córdova as chancellor. Córdova has been vice-chancellor for research at UC Santa Barbara ... Ann Weaver Hart was named as president at New Hampshire. Hart most recently has been serving as provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Claremont Graduate University ... Dennis J. Johnson was selected as interim president at Gustavus Adolphus, effective in June. Johnson formerly was vice-president for college relations at the school ... Bridgewater State appointed Dana Mohler-Faria was president. Mohler-Faria has been vice-president for administration and finance at the school.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Cornell College hired Tina Hill as director of athletics to succeed Ellen Whale, who served as interim athletics director during the 2001-02 academic year. Since 1997, Hill has worked as senior woman administrator and associate athletics director at California Lutheran ... UCLA hired Dan Guerrero as director of athletics to replace Peter Dalis. For the past 10 years, Guerrero has been athletics director at UC Irvine and formerly fulfilled the same responsibilities at Cal State Dominguez Hills ... Newberry's Oliver Johnson resigned as athletics director ... Tennessee State elevated Teresa Phillips, interim athletics director since June 2001, to athletics director. Phillips was head women's basketball coach at the school from 1989 to 2000 and was named as an associate athletics director in 1995 ... Kris Jacobsen was promoted to athletics director at Carroll, effective July 1, after spending the past year as an associate athletics director. Jacobsen, who also has been head women's basketball and softball coach, will relinquish responsibilities with the softball program.

Mary Ann Sprague was selected as associate athletics director at Principia. Sprague will continue as sports information director and head women's volleyball coach at the school ... Dean Billick was named as deputy director of athletics at Cincinnati. Billick has spent the past five years as director of athletics at Lamar ... Pace chose Mike Winn as assistant athletics director for facilities and operations for the Goldstein Fitness Center. Winn has worked as the school's facilities director, director of intramurals and recreation and head women's soccer coach since 1998 ... Jacksonville State selected Greg Bonds as assistant athletics director for compliance, Greg Seitz as assistant athletics director for media relations and Mike Parris as assistant athletics director for marketing and broadcasting ... James Greenwell was elevated to assistant athletics director of facilities and operations at Central Florida.

COACHES

Baseball -- John Gurzo resigned after 13 seasons as head coach at Richard Stockton. The school appointed assistant George McDonnell as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2002 season ... Pete Dunn, head coach at Stetson, signed a long-term contract extension. Dunn has guided the program to 845 victories and four Atlantic Sun Conference championships in 23 years.

Men's basketball -- Heath Schroyer was named as head coach at Portland State to succeed Joel Sobotka. Most recently, Schroyer has been an assistant at Wyoming ... Gordon hired Michael J. Schauer as head coach. Since 2000, Schauer has been head men's basketball coach and athletics director at Eastern ... Dwight Freeman accepted head coaching duties at Norfolk State to replace Wil Jones. Freeman has spent the past seven years as an assistant at Miami (Florida) ... Jerry Wainwright was chosen as head coach at Richmond. Wainwright, who replaces John Beilein, has been head coach at North Carolina-Wilmington, where he led squads to a 136-103 record in eight seasons ... North Carolina-Wilmington elevated assistant coach Brad Brownell as head coach to replace Jerry Wainwright ... Ferris State chose Bill Sall as head coach ... Evansville appointed Steve Merfeld as head coach to replace Jim Crews. Merfeld has guided Hampton to a 90-57 record in five seasons ... Hampton elevated Bobby Collins to interim head coach to succeed Steve Merfeld. Collins has been with the program for seven years, most recently serving as assistant head coach ... Tennessee Tech selected Mike Sutton as head coach. Sutton, who succeeds Jeff Lebo, has worked as an assistant at Kentucky for five years ... Homer Drew, head coach at Valparaiso for the past 14 seasons, announced his retirement. Drew, who led the program to a 236-185 record and seven Mid-Continent Conference championships, will continue at the school as a special assistant to the president for university advancement. The school named Scott Drew, an assistant for the past nine seasons, as head coach ... Tod Kowalczyk was named as head coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay to succeed Mike Heideman. For the past two seasons, Kowalczyk has been an assistant at Marquette ... Adelphi added James Cosgrove as head coach. Cosgrove has served as head coach at Endicott for the past four seasons ... Bill Sall was hired as head coach at Ferris State. Men's basketball assistants -- Dick Hunsaker resigned as an assistant at Utah to become head coach at Utah Valley State College. Hunsaker spent four seasons at Utah, including serving as acting head coach during the 2000-01 season ... Eastern New Mexico named Mark Murdock as an assistant. Murdock, who replaces Doug Davalos, has been head men's basketball coach at Eastfield (Texas) College ... LSU elevated Butch Pierre to associate head coach. Pierre has spent the past five years with the program ... Russ Schoene accepted responsibilities as an assistant at Washington after fulfilling head coaching duties at Bellevue Community College for the past five years ... Tim Swanson was added as an assistant coach at Northwest Nazarene. Swanson, who has been head coach at Eastern Nazarene for two years, replaces Julious Coleman ... Providence's Jim Jabir resigned as head coach to become an assistant coach at Colorado. Jabir, who succeeds Jen Warden at Colorado, has guided Providence for six seasons ... Beth Couture was appointed as head coach at Butler ... Appalachian State chose Adrienne Shuler as head coach. Shuler has been an assistant at Furman for seven seasons ... Sharon Baldwin, head coach at Mercer last season, was hired as head coach at East Carolina ... Southwest Missouri State head coach Cheryl Burnett resigned after guiding the school to two Women's Final Four appearances in 15 seasons ... Deb Patterson was awarded a three-year contract extension as head coach at Kansas State. Patterson has led the program for six seasons ... Missouri-Rolla's Linda Roberts resigned as head coach, effective June 30. Roberts spent 11 seasons as head coach ... Terry Fowler was selected as head coach at Spring Hill ... Saint Leo added Jodi Beth Kest as head coach. For the past six years, Kest has been head coach at Gannon ... Stephanie Gaitley was named as head coach at Long Island. Gaitley, who succeeds Tony Bozella, spent 10 seasons as head coach at St. Joseph's before being released in April 2001 ... Carol Russell was promoted to head coach at Texas Pan-American. Russell, who replaces Karin Nicholls, has served as associate head coach for the past two seasons ... Utah State chose Raegan Scott-Pebley as head coach. The program is scheduled to being competition during the 2003-04 season after a 16-year absence. Scott-Pebley played professionally in the WNBA for two seasons and formerly was an assistant at Colorado State and George Mason ... Ed Wyant was added as head coach at Wofford. For the past seven years, Wyant has been an assistant at New Mexico.

Women's basketball assistants -- Kim Hairston and Krista Kilburn-Steveskey were added as assistant coaches at James Madison. Hairston served as an assistant coach at Howard last season, and Kilburn-Steveskey has worked as head girls' basketball coach at Wheeler (Georgia) High School since 1996 ... Christi Abbate and Bill Carpenter were appointed as assistant coaches at Iona ... Iowa State chose Jodi Steyer as an assistant coach ... Southwest Missouri State's Lynnette Robinson and Karen Rapier resigned as assistants ... Blaine Patterson was named as an assistant at Wyoming ... Campbell's Tonya Colwell resigned as an assistant coach ... Amy Meckling was hired as an assistant coach at Colorado Northwestern ... Dean Mendes resigned as an assistant coach at Brown.

Women's bowling -- Mike LoPresti was hired as head women's coach at Fairleigh Dickinson. The program is scheduled to begin competition during the 2002-03 academic year. LoPresti has been head coach at Northern Valley Regional High School since 1999 and formerly led William Paterson to a men's National Collegiate Bowling Championship in 1992.

Men's and women's cross country -- Christopher D'Aniello was hired as head men's and women's coach at Clark (Massachusetts). D'Aniello has guided the program at Worcester State since 1999.

Field hockey assistant -- Hofstra awarded assistant coaching responsibilities to Wendy Brady.

Football -- Greensboro added Neal Mitchell as head coach ... Louisiana Tech head coach Jack Bicknell III was awarded a two-year contract extension. Bicknell has guided the program since 1999.

Football assistants -- Citadel appointed Robert Pinilla as defensive line coach ... Adam Gonzaga accepted duties as defensive coordinator at Northwood ... Dartmouth chose Ted Stewart as an assistant coach ... Oklahoma State named Todd Monken as receivers coach. Monken, who replaces Darrell Wyatt, has been an assistant at Louisiana Tech for two seasons ... Chris Howard was selected as offensive coordinator at Elmhurst. For the past six years, Howard has fulfilled various responsibilities at Southern Utah, including defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator, running backs coach and strength and conditioning coach ... Joe Curry was hired as defensive line coach at Ferris State to replace Joe Allgeier. Curry most recently has been an assistant at University of St. Francis ... Pennsylvania added Damian Wroblewski as tight ends coach and Jim O'Neil as offensive assistant coach. The school also promoted Steve Downs, part-time running backs coach for the past three seasons, to full-time status and elevated Trey Brown to replace Kirk Ciarrocca as wide receivers coach. Wroblewski, who replaces Brown, has been an assistant at Bryant for three years. O'Neil has been an assistant at Albany (New York) for one season and succeeds Ben Zagorski ... Craig Hauser replaced Rick Humphreys as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Jacksonville ... Coastal Carolina appointed Drew Watson as defensive backs coach ... Ferris State hired Darrell Perkins as defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator. Perkins, who succeeds Cary Marquell, has been a graduate assistant coach at Purdue ... Shay McClure assumed duties as defensive coordinator at Southern Oregon ... Randolph-Macon added Tim Camp as offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and strength coordinator; Ron Maier as defensive coordinator; and Mac McConnell as defensive line coach. Camp has been assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and head strength coach at Sewanee (University of the South). Maier served as defensive coordinator and defensive backfield coach at Wayne State (Michigan) since 1997. McConnell has spent the past 25 years as head football coach at Lee-Davis (Virginia) High School.

Men's and women's golf -- Alabama-Birmingham's Gwen Merritt announced plans to retire as head women's coach, effective at the end of the season ... Gerald Runey retired as head coach at Citadel.

Men's and women's gymnastics -- Florida head coach Judi Markell resigned.

Men's and women's rowing -- Bill Sanford retired as head men's crew coach at Syracuse.

Men's soccer -- West Virginia named Keith Fulk as head coach. In six seasons as head coach at Tampa, Fulk led the program to a 81-24-7 record, three Sunshine State Conference championships and the 2001 national championship ... Sewanee (University of the South) appointed Qasim Sheikh as head coach ... LaVerne named Crescencio Gonzalez as head coach ... Tom Baker, an assistant coach at Culver-Stockton, was elevated to head coach to succeed Bill Schneider, who resigned.

Men's soccer assistant -- North Carolina State appointed Jeremy Ballenger as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Newberry chose Jonathan Wilson as head coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Victor Wales was named as head women's coach at San Jose State. Wales has been an assistant men's and women's coach at Arizona State and spent the past season as interim head coach at San Jose State.

Men's and women's tennis -- Dick Leach announced plans to retire as head coach at Southern California, effective at the end of the season ... John Antonicelli resigned as head women's coach at Caldwell ... Alan Koth retired as head men's coach at Franklin & Marshall ... Utah's John Tsumas resigned as head women's coach ... John Venter was hired as head women's coach at Indianapolis to replace Dawn Patel. Venter has been head boys' and girls' coach at Whiteland (Indiana) High School for nine seasons.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Texas Lutheran hired Brandi Bradley as head women's coach to replace Phil Jackson. Bradley has been assistant varsity and head junior varsity volleyball coach as well as head softball coach at Hyde Park Baptist (Texas) High School ... Maureen Boyle was selected as head volleyball and head softball coach at Beloit. Boyle has been head volleyball and assistant softball coach at Flathead (Montana) High School, where she led the volleyball squad to a state championship in 2001.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Northern Illinois named Chrissy Smith and Mike Dauernheim as assistant women's coaches ... Auburn selected Matt Darling as an assistant women's coach.

Wrestling -- Bloomsburg named Dan Wirnsberger as head coach. For the past six years, Wirnsberger has been an assistant coach at Virginia Tech ... Thiel appointed George Dunn as head coach.

STAFF

Administrative -- Cael Sanderson was hired as an administrative assistant in the athletics department at Iowa State. Sanderson, who was a wrestling student-athlete at the school, was the first undeafeted four-time NCAA wrestling champion. Sanderson closed his college career with a 159-0 record.

Sports information -- Jacksonville State named Michelle Alford as sports information director for women.

Strength and conditioning -- Bruce Seidman was chosen as head strength and conditioning coach at San Jose State to succeed Kim Sword. For the last four years, Seidman has worked as head strength and conditioning coach at Idaho State.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Chris Martin resigned as membership services representative/Division III governance liaison at the national office.

Lori Braa, most recently committee coordinator at the national office, was named as the NCAA Hall of Champions curriculum development coordinator.

CONFERENCES

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference announced it will not renew the contract of Commissioner Ellen M. Zavian ... Tommy Hunt was named as coordinator of football officials for the Big South Conference ... The Patriot League selected Daniel E. Trump as assistant executive director for sport management and governance, effective June 10. Most recently, Trump has worked as associate director of athletics for compliance at Oregon State and succeeds M. Grace Calhoun ... Robert Modica was appointed as assistant director for conference operations at the New England Small College Athletic Conference, effective July 1. Modica, who has been interim associate athletics director at Vassar, replaces Timothy Farrell.

ASSOCIATIONS

Host Communications, Inc., named Ross "Rocky" Kurland as vice-president for publishing advertising sales. Kurland has been working at AOL Time Warner's Golf Magazine Properties for the past 12 years.

REPRIMANDS

The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee has reprimanded St. John's University (New York) head coach Dave Masur and assistant coach Jesse Van Saun for their behavior at the 2001 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer quarterfinal game in Dallas. Masur and Van Saun left the coaching box, with Masur entering the field of play without being summoned by the referee, and Van Saun approaching the assistant referee.

DEATHS

Grand Valley State's Rob Odejewski died April 12. Odejewski was an assistant director of athletics for marketing and promotions.

Sam Francis, former all-American fullback at Nebraska, died April 23. He was 88. Francis, who was a three-year letter-winner at the school, earned all-America honors in 1936 and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in the same year. The 1977 College Football Hall of Fame inductee went on to play professional football and also won fourth place in the shot put in the 1936 Olympics.

Former UCLA sports information director Vic Kelley Jr. died recently. He was 88. Kelley, who played on the UCLA golf team for three years before graduating in 1937, spent 36 years as sports information director at the school before his retirement in 1981. The College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame member also coached UCLA's golf team from 1948 to 1975.

Curtis Williams, 24, the former Washington safety who suffered a spinal-cord injury in an October 2000 football game against Stanford, died in his sleep May 6. Williams' injury, caused by a helmet-to-helmet hit, had left him without any voluntary muscle movement. He leaves behind a 7-year-old daughter.
