Rogers takes men's cage post at Mars Hill

Terry Rogers has been hired as head men's basketball coach at Mars Hill. Most recently, Rogers has been employed with All Star Sports, where he evaluated high-school basketball talent and organized and directed basketball clinics. Before joining All Star Sports, he served as associate head basketball coach at Western Carolina. Rogers also has coached at the high-school level. From 1973 to 1998, he led the boys' basketball program at Freedom (North Carolina) High School. Rogers also worked as the school's athletics director from 1983 to 1998. Rogers is a graduate of Gardner-Webb, where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education.

Esposito has worked as dean of the college of graduate studies at the school ... Immaculata appointed Sister R. Patricia Fadden as president, effective July 1. Most recently, Fadden has been principal at Villa Maria Academy in Pennsylvania ... P. Graham Hatcher, vice-president for academic affairs and academic dean at Anderson (South Carolina), was chosen as interim president at the school ... Barton President James B. Hemby Jr. announced plans to retire, effective December 31 ... James G. Moseley was named president at Franklin, effective July 1. Moseley has been vice-president and dean of the college at Transylvania ... Louisiana-Monroe interim President Thomas A. Rakes was appointed as vice chancellor for academic affairs at Tennessee-Martin ... John W. Shumaker resigned as president at Louisville to become president of the University of Tennessee system ... Rebecca Stafford announced retirement plans as president at Monmouth, effective June 2003 ... B. James Dawson was named as president at Coker. Dawson has been president at Tennessee Wesleyan ... Alvin Goldfarb was selected as president at Western Illinois, effective July 1. Most recently, Goldfarb has been provost and academic vice-president at Illinois State.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Liesl Fowler resigned as women's athletics director and volleyball coach at Augustana (Illinois) ... Stan Lambert resigned as athletics director at Abilene Christian to return to the banking industry. Lambert has guided the program since 1995. The school announced that Wally Bullington, a former athletics director at the school, will fulfill interim responsibilities ... Olgethorpe's Jack Berkshire announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective at the end of June. Berkshire has been athletics director for 26 years and also served as the school's head men's basketball coach for 22 years ... Peter Fields was named athletics director at Montana State, replacing the retired Chuck Lindemenn and interim athletics director Glenn Lewis. Most recently, Fields has been associate athletics director for business at Missouri ... Randolph-Macon hired Kevin T. Eastman as athletics director. Eastman, who is the owner and director of Kevin Eastman Basketball Camps, has formerly completed coaching stints at Washington State, North Carolina-Wilmington, Tulsa, Belmont Abbey, Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth and was athletics director at Belmont Abbey.

Lamar hired Kevin Whalen as assistant athletics director for business affairs. For the past three years, Whalen has worked as director of baseball operations for the Ottawa Lynx Baseball Club ... Winston-Salem State released Daymond Lindell as assistant athletics director and head women's basketball coach ... Samford named Janet Cone as assistant athletics director ... Nick Williams assumed responsibilities as assistant athletics director/marketing at Central Michigan. For the past three years, Williams has worked at the school as director of the Chippewa Club ... Alabama-Birmingham hired Norm Reilly as assistant athletics director for media relations. For the past year, Reilly has served as director of communications and public relations for the National Senior Games Association and formerly was an assistant athletics director for media relations at East Carolina.

COACHES

Men's basketball -- College of Charleston's John Kresse announced plans to retire as head coach after 23 seasons to become an assistant to the college president. Since accepting head coaching duties in 1979, Kresse has guided the school to a 560-143 record and four NCAA tournament appearances ... Livingstone released head coach Edward Joyner ... Randy Wiel resigned as head coach at Middle Tennessee ... Albany (New York) named Will Brown as head coach. Brown joined the school as an assistant coach in September 2001 and has been interim head coach since December ... Chattanooga released Henry Dickerson as head coach and reassigned him to the office of student affairs. Dickerson guided the program for five years. Kenny Seifert, an assistant coach, was named as interim head coach ... Pittsburgh extended the contract of head coach Ben Howland through the 2008-09 season. In three seasons at the school, Howland has guided the program to a 61-35 mark. ... Carroll will not renew the contract of head coach Sean McDonough ... Sal Mentesana will not have his contract renewed as head coach at Lehigh. Mentesana has been head coach at the school since the 1996-97 season ... Mike Colella resigned after three seasons as head coach at Goldey-Beacom ... Florida State released Steve Robinson as head coach after five years ... New Mexico's Fran Fraschilla resigned as head coach. The former head coach at Manhattan and St. John's (New York) closed his tenure at New Mexico with a 55-41 mark in three seasons ... John Marhefka was named as head coach at Armstrong Atlantic State after working in an interim capacity during the 2001-02 season. Marhefka, who succeeds Griff Mills, spent the 2000-01 season as head assistant with the program ... Bob Williams, head coach at UC Santa Barbara, was awarded a three-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season. Williams guided this year's team to the Big West Conference tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA tournament ... Clemson extended the contract of head coach Larry Shyatt through the 2005 season. Shyatt has led the program for four seasons ... Jerry Tarkanian retired as head coach at Fresno State and will become a consultant for the school. Tarkanian, who guided Fresno State's program for seven years and formerly was head coach at UNLV, where he won a national championship in 1990, built a 778-202 career record ... Bob Weltlich resigned as head coach at South Alabama.

Women's basketball -- Lynn Plett resigned as head coach at St. Joseph's (Indiana) ... Illinois-Chicago's Tim Eatman resigned as head coach ... Morgan State will not renew the contract of head coach Gerard Garlic ... Jerry Hester resigned as head coach at Troy State after seven seasons ... Southern Idaho chose Steve Irons as head coach. Irons, who replaces Kendall Grant, served as head men's coach at the school from 1993 to 1996 and has been teaching in the school's mathematics department ... Jessica Ott was elevated to head coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Ott, who spent the 2001-02 season as an assistant, replaces Laurie Brock ... Britt King resigned as head coach at Fresno State after four years as head coach ... Western Kentucky chose Mary Taylor Cowles as head coach ... UC Santa Barbara gave head coach Mark French a three-year contract extension through the 2007-08 season. French's squad earned its sixth consecutive Big West Conference tournament championship this season and made an appearance in the NCAA tournament ... Press Parham was released as head coach at Alabama A&M and was reassigned to the office of the director of athletics. Parham joined the school in 1978 as head baseball coach and assistant men's basketball coach and has spent the past 20 seasons as head coach. The school announced that second assistant coach Dexter Holt will assume interim head coaching duties. Holt has been with the program for two seasons ... Sherri Murrell was appointed as head coach at Washington State. Murrell, who has been head coach at Pacific (California) for the past four years, replaces Jenny Przekwas ... Wofford head coach David Graves resigned after six years and accepted a position as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky. Tammy George, an assistant at Wofford, was chosen as interim head coach.

Women's basketball assistants -- Southern Mississippi's Janice Felder resigned as an assistant coach ... JoVanka Lewis was released as an assistant at Alabama A&M and was reassigned to the athletics director's office.

Men's and women's cross country -- Cal State Los Angeles head coach Kevin McCarthy resigned as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach, effective June 30. McCarthy has led the men's program for 10 years and has guided the women's teams for five years ... Kristina Laubenstein was named as interim head men's and women's coach at West Chester to replace Kevin Kelly, who resigned as men's and women's cross country/track and field coach ... Clark (Massachusetts) hired Walter Berkowicz as head men's and women's coach to replace Greg Marcotte, who resigned after five seasons. Berkowicz has been coaching boys' and girls' track at Uxbridge (Massachusetts) and will retain those responsibilities.

Men's and women's cross country assistant -- Nate Hoey accepted responsibilities as interim assistant men's and women's coach at West Chester.

Field hockey assistant -- West Chester chose Jayne Landis as an assistant coach.

Football -- Bill Maskill was hired as head coach at Midwestern State, succeeding Linwood Ferguson. Maskill formerly was head coach at Southeast Missouri State for two years and formerly was an assistant coach at Southern Methodist, Wake Forest, Oregon, Tulane, Louisville, Arizona, Bowling Green and Iowa ... Minnesota State-Mankato named Clarence Holley as head coach to replace Dan Runkle. For the past three years, Holley has been head coach at Arkansas-Monticello ... Morehouse hired Willard Scissum to succeed Anthony Jones as head coach. Scissum formerly was offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at the school from 1998 to 2000 and spent last year as offensive coordinator at Morris Brown.

Football assistants -- Rhode Island selected Guido Falbo as an assistant coach and promoted Jeff Weaver to an assistant coach. Weaver replaces Vinny Marino who accepted a position at Connecticut ... Dave Brock resigned as offensive coordinator and Raheem Morris resigned as defensive backs coach at Hofstra. The school chose Warren Ruggiero as offensive coordinator, Jimmy Salgado as defensive backs coach and Jeff Behrman as wide receivers coach ... Rutgers added Randy Melvin as defensive line coach ... Levorn Harbin was awarded duties as defensive ends and special teams coach at Georgia Southern ... Purdue appointed Greg Olson as tight ends coach ... Luke Fickell was named as special teams coordinator at Ohio State ... Illinois Wesleyan added Ethan Waugh as offensive coordinator to succeed J.B. Wells. Waugh has been an assistant at Western Carolina since 1997 ... West Virginia Wesleyan hired Adam Martiny as an assistant ... Joe Tresey was awarded responsibilities as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Akron. Since 1999, Tresey has served as defensive backs coach at VMI ... Art Kehoe was elevated to assistant head coach at Miami (Florida). Kehoe has been offensive line coach with the program since 1985 ... Stephen F. Austin selected Greg Stevens as quarterbacks coach and Scott Reed as wide receivers coach. Stevens was offensive coordinator at Arkansas-Monticello and Reed worked as head coach at Bartlett (Tennessee) High School ... Tulsa added Matt Wells as tight ends coach and promoted Steve Hayes to defensive secondary coach. Wells has been an assistant at Navy for five seasons, and Hayes has been an assistant with the program for three years ... Robert Henry was hired as defensive ends coach and Vance Joseph was named as secondary coach at Wyoming. Henry, who was an assistant at Baylor for two years, replaces David Arnsparger. Joseph has been an assistant at Colorado for two years and succeeds Bryan Bossard ... Darrell Wyatt was appointed as receivers coach at Oklahoma. Wyatt served as an assistant at Oklahoma State during the 2001 season ... VMI named Johnny Burnett as defensive coordinator and secondary coach and added Latrell Scott as wide receivers coach. The school also announced that receivers coach Jack Baker will move to running backs and slotbacks coach.

Men's and women's golf assistant -- Georgia selected Laura Henderson-Matthews as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Mike Eaves was hired as head men's coach at Wisconsin to succeed the retired Jeff Sauer. Eaves, who has been overseeing the USA Hockey-sponsored U.S. National Developmental Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for the past two years, formerly was head coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire and St. Cloud State ... St. Catherine elevated Mary Brown to head women's coach after the resignation of Jeff Smith. Smith has guided the program since 1998, and Brown has been an assistant for the past two seasons.

Men's soccer -- Lance Watkins was hired as head coach at Erskine. Watkins has been head men's coach and athletics department business manager at St. Andrews Presbyterian ... David Edwards was named as head coach and assistant sports information director at Ferrum to replace Chris Gnehm, who resigned after two seasons. Most recently, Edwards has spent the past four years as director of the goalkeeping school at U.K. Elite Soccer in New Jersey.

Women's soccer -- West Chester selected Deb Flaherty as interim head coach to replace Jessica Reynolds, who resigned to accept a coaching position at St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania) ... Jim Sweeney was hired as head coach at Shepherd to succeed Jason Childers. Sweeney has been an assistant men's and women's coach at St. Edward's ... Williams (Massachusetts) named Michelyne Pinard as head women's soccer and assistant women's ice hockey coach. Pinard, who replaces Lisa Melendy, has spent the past two seasons as an assistant women's soccer coach at Pennsylvania.

Women's soccer assistants -- St. John's (New York) appointed Suzy Strazzulla as an assistant coach ... Jacksonville State hired Wendy Holleman as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Colleen Honohan resigned as head men's and women's coach at Merrimack.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Georgia Southern selected Nikole Jones as head swimming coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Hunter appointed Mitch Polstein as head men's coach to replace Jocelyn Cruz, who will continue as head women's tennis coach. Polstein formerly was head coach of the men's program from 1987 to 1993.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Stony Brook added Marie-Claude Ostiguy as a graduate assistant men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Ermelinda Spies was chosen as an assistant coach at VMI.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Northern Illinois selected Ray Gooden as head women's coach ... West Chester named Sharon Bonaventure as head women's coach ... Fiona Bolten was chosen as head coach at Lamar. Bolten has been top assistant at Memphis for the past two seasons ... Cal State Northridge appointed Jeff Stork as head women's coach. Stork, who succeeds the retired Lian Lu, has been an assistant men's coach at Pepperdine and was a gold medalist at the 1988 Olympic Games.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Steven Aird accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Davidson ... Melissa Starck accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Jacksonville State.

STAFF

Development -- West Chester added Chris Lynch as director of athletics development.

Marketing/promotions -- Michael Bruny accepted responsibilities as manager of marketing and corporate relations at Connecticut.

Sports information assistant -- Clemson named Brian Hennessy as assistant sports information director.

CONFERENCES

The Presidents' Athletic Conference hired Joe Onderko as information director ... Donna Ledwin was named as commissioner and sports information director of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Ledwin, who has been commissioner and sports information director of the New Jersey Athletic Conference since May 1999, serves on the NCAA Division III Membership and Nominating Committees.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Greg Turner was announced as program coordinator, basketball mentoring at the national office. Turner has been director of special events at the Ohio Valley Conference.

NAME CHANGES

Fontbonne College officially changed its name to Fontbonne University, effective March 19.

DEATHS

Former Campbell athletics director Wendell Carr died of heart failure March 9 at the age of 71. Carr spent 18 years as athletics director at the school in addition to working as head men's tennis coach for seven years and head men's golf coach for three seasons.

Dennis Getzlaff, former head coach and athletics director at Concordia (Minnesota), died of cancer February 13. Getzlaff was head men's basketball coach for 12 seasons and served as athletics director from 1990 to 1997.

Former Southern California football player Bill Radovich died recently. He was 87. Radovich was a three-time letter-winner at offensive guard, from 1935 to 1937, who went on to become an all-pro offensive lineman with the NFL's Detroit Lions.

Beth Snyder and Meg Gutzwiller, women's soccer student-athletes at Tiffin, died in an automobile accident March 9. Snyder was a sophomore and Gutzwiller was an all-America selection.

Melanie Sears, a former women's basketball player at Tiffin, was killed in an automobile accident recently. Sears was a 2000 graduate of the school and had played professionally overseas.

Bill Davis, head football coach at Savannah State, died recently. He was 60. Davis had been head coach at Savannah State from 1986 to 1992 and had returned to the program in 2000. He also fulfilled coaching tenures at South Carolina State, Tennessee State and Johnson C. Smith.

Former Washington State athletics administrator Glenn E. Oman passed away Febraury 18. Oman fulfilled responsibilities at the school for 32 years, including serving as ticket manager, business manager and assistant athletics director, before retiring as associate athletics director emeritus in 1981.
