Collier named as head coach at Wingate

Wingate has hired Shelton Collier as head women's volleyball coach. Collier replaces Susan Deaton, who resigned to become an assistant coach with the Minnesota Chill of the United States Professional Volleyball League.

Since 1991, Collier has guided the women's program at Georgia Tech. His teams made four NCAA Division I tournament appearances during his tenure, and he was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year in 1995. Before joining Georgia Tech, Collier served as an assistant with the U.S. Women's National Team from 1988 to 1990. He also spent nine seasons as head coach at Pittsburgh from 1980 to 1988. Collier formerly served as an assistant coach at Ohio State and Cincinnati.

Collier earned a bachelor's degree in social work in 1977 at Ohio State, where he was an all-American volleyball player, and he also earned a master's degree in education and counseling at Cincinnati in 1978.

GENERAL

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Paul C. Pribbenow was appointed as president at Rockford. Pribbenow has been a research fellow at the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts at Wabash ... Ed D. Roach resigned as president at West Alabama, effective February 28.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Gettysburg chose David Wright as director of athletics to succeed Chuck Winters who is resigning after 13 years. Wright has been an associate athletics director and head men's soccer coach at the school since 1986 ... Oval Jaynes resigned as athletics director at Chattanooga to become assistant to the chancellor at the school. Jaynes has been athletics director since 1998 ... Bobby Robinson announced plans to retire after 17 years as athletics director at Clemson, effective at the end of June ... Ball State's Andrea Seger announced plans to retire after seven years as athletics director, effective July 1. Seger, who came to the school in 1975 as an assistant professor and assistant athletic trainer, served as director of women's sports from 1983 to 1995.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Carol Cantele, head women's lacrosse and field hockey coach at Gettysburg, was named as senior woman administrator at the school, effective June 1. Cantele, who has fulfilled head coaching duties since 1992, will continue as head lacrosse coach, but will relinquish field hockey responsibilities.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Texas elevated Jim Baker to associate athletics director for events and operations. Baker has been an assistant athletics director ... Alabama-Birmingham named Dennis Rancont as associate athletics director for operations. Rancont joined the school as a student trainer in 1978 and has spent the past five years as assistant athletics director for operations ... John Graham was promoted to associate athletics director for the Frank C. Erwin Jr. Special Events Center at Texas. Graham has been director of the center.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Albany (New York) named William Schut as assistant athletics director for compliance and student services ... John Bianco was promoted to assistant athletics director for media relations at Texas after most recently serving as media relations director ... North Carolina-Pembroke elevated John Haskins to assistant athletics director for internal affairs and head golf coach. Haskins has been head men's basketball coach since 1992 and replaces Wendell Staton as head golf coach.

COACHES

Baseball assistant -- Southern New Hampshire hired Scott Durand as an assistant. For the past three seasons, Durand has been head coach at Daniel Webster.

Men's basketball -- West Virginia's Gale Catlett announced plans to retire as head coach, effective at the end of the 2001-02 season. Catlett is the school's winningest basketball coach with a 439-276 mark in 24 years. Although Catlett will remain involved with the team until the end of the season, the school announced that assistant coach Drew Catlett will assume bench coaching responsibilities for the remainder of the season ... Mercyhurst renewed head coach Karl Fogel's contract for the 2002-03 season.

Women's basketball -- Marti Whitmore was named as acting head coach at Western Kentucky, replacing Shawn Campbell, who resigned after being indefinitely suspended for inappropriate conduct. Whitmore is a first-year assistant with the program and formerly was head coach at St. Bonaventure ... Milwaukee School of Engineering's Laurie Brock resigned as head coach, effective immediately. Brock has guided the program since 1997.

Men's and women's cross country -- Bill King was selected as head men's and women's coach at Scranton.

Field hockey -- Rebecca Provost Campbell resigned as head coach at Rhode Island. In Campbell's seven-year tenure, the program made four Atlantic 10 Conference championship game appearances.

Football -- Delaware head coach Harold R. "Tubby" Raymond resigned after 36 years. Raymond led the Blue Hens to a 300-119-3 record and national championships in 1971, 1972 and 1979 ... John Cervino was hired as head coach at Heidelberg after working as linebackers coach at Northeastern for the past two seasons. Cervino takes over for Larry Shank ... Nick Saban signed a new contract as head coach at LSU.

Football assistants -- Central Michigan named Mike Bajakian as quarterbacks coach, Joe Danna as wide receivers coach and Tor Dixon as defensive backfield coach to replace Scot Loeffler, Curt Mallory and Jason Carr. Bajakian was a graduate assistant quarterbacks coach at Michigan, Danna most recently served as a graduate assistant secondary coach at Georgia, and Dixon has been recruiting coordinator and secondary coach at Indiana State for the past year ... Kevin Kelly was awarded duties as linebackers and special teams coach at Navy ... Derek Mason was appointed as receivers coach at Utah ... Washington chose Cornell Jackson as linebackers coach ... Connecticut named Torrian Gray as defensive backs coach and Vinny Marino as wide receivers coach ... Ken Conatser was hired as offensive line coach at Kansas to replace Dave Borbely. Conatser was defensive ends coach and special teams coordinator at Ohio State. Kansas also selected Tyrone Dixon as running backs coach and George Matsakis as director of football operations. Dixon has spent the past two seasons as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach at Cincinnati, and Matsakis has most recently fulfilled similar duties at Houston ... Syracuse awarded assistant coaching responsibilities to Timothy Walton ... TCU hired Dick Winder as quarterbacks coach to replace Dan Lounsbury. For the past two seasons, Winder has worked as quarterbacks coach at Tarleton State ... Indiana named Al Borges as offensive coordinator, Tim Kish as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, Curt Mallory as secondary coach, Mo Moriarity as tight ends coach, Steve Addazio as offensive line coach, Gerald Brown as running backs coach, Joe Cullen as defensive line coach, Brian McNeely as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, Charlie McMillian as secondary coach, and Dino Mangiero as director of football operations. Borges has been offensive coordinator at California, Kish was defensive coordinator at Ohio last season before being released, and Mallory spent last season as secondary coach at Central Michigan. Moriarity has been head coach at Bloomington South (Indiana) High School for 15 seasons while Addazio was offensive line, tight ends and special teams coach at Notre Dame for three seasons. Brown spent the 2001 season coaching the XFL's Memphis Maniax, and Cullen served as defensive line coach at Memphis. Most recently, McNeeley has worked as coordinator of football operations and recruiting at Colorado and, for the last eight years, Mangiero has been a head coach at the high-school level ... Pete Jenkins, defensive line coach at LSU since the 2000 season, announced his retirement. Jenkins, who formerly worked at LSU from 1980 to 1990, also has coached at North Alabama, South Carolina, Southern Mississippi, Oklahoma State, Florida, Mississippi State and Auburn ... Chuck Driesbach was chosen as defensive coordinator at Mississippi ... North Carolina State selected Manny Diaz as defensive coach ... Florida State elevated Mickey Andrews to associate coach and Billy Sexton to assistant head coach. Andrews, who replaces Jim Gladden, has been defensive coordinator and Sexton has been running backs coach. Gladden resigned after 27 years as an assistant, including serving 20 years as linebackers coach before becoming defensive ends coach in 1996 and spending one season as associate head coach. He was reassigned within the school. The program also hired Jody Allen as defensive ends coach. Allen has been a graduate assistant defensive backs coach with the school for two seasons ... Bobby Kennedy was added as an offensive assistant at Washington to replace Tony Alford. Last season, Kennedy was running backs coach at Arizona ... Scot Loeffler was hired as quarterbacks coach at Michigan to replace Stan Parrish, who resigned as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Loeffler has spent the past two years as quarterbacks coach at Central Michigan ... Louisville added John Pettas as offensive coordinator. Pettas, who was receivers coach at Washington last season, replaces Scott Linehan ... Jon Tenuta was named as defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech after serving one season as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at North Carolina ... John Thompson was awarded responsibilities as defensive coordinator at Florida. Most recently, Thompson has been co-defensive coordinator at Arkansas ... Northern Illinois elevated Greg Bower to full-time assistant coach to succeed Mike Priefer, who accepted a post with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. Since 2000, Bower has served as a graduate assistant coach at Northern Illinois ... Texas Lutheran added John Lamme, Larry Nowotny and Bill Schade as assistants ... Dave Borbely accepted duties as an assistant coach at Colorado to replace Steve Marshall. Borbely spent four years as an assistant at Notre Dame before being released and has been an offensive coach at Kansas since December ... Jackson State hired Greg Johnson as defensive coordinator. Johnson, who has been head coach and athletics director at Hearne (Texas) High School for two years, replaces Robert Kelly. Kelly was reassigned as defensive backs coach ... Dave Wommack was named as defensive coordinator at Arkansas. Wommack, who succeeds John Thompson, was secondary coach at the school last year ... West Virginia added Paul Randolph as defensive line coach. Last season, Randolph was defensive line and special teams coach at Toledo ... Cincinnati hired Rusty Burns as offensive coordinator. Burns has spent the past three years as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Wyoming ... Todd Goebbel assumed responsibilities as offensive coordinator/assistant coach at Quincy. Goebbel, who has been quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Tiffin since June 2000, replaces Phil Keefe ... Tom Masella resigned after three seasons as defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech to accept the same position at Massachusetts ... Washington chose Cornell Jackson as linebackers coach. Jackson, who replaces Tom Williams, has been linebackers coach at Houston for two seasons ... Kacy Rodgers was hired as defensive line coach at Arkansas. Rodgers has been an assistant head coach and defensive line coach at Middle Tennessee State ... Tracy Rocker was selected as defensive line coach and Phil Dorn was appointed as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Cincinnati. Rocker has spent the last five years as defensive line coach at Troy State, and Dorn was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at California (Pennsylvania) for five years.

Men's and women's golf -- Missouri Western State chose Randy McGohan as head women's coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition in the fall of 2002. McGohan has been working as a PGA pro at Dick's Sporting Goods in Kansas City, Missouri.

Men's and women's gymnastics -- Trina Tinti resigned as head women's coach at California, effective immediately. Tinti has guided the program since 1998.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Roger Williams awarded Marty Kelly with head men's coaching responsibilities. Kelly, who replaces A.J. Stevens, also serves as a development assistant in the school's office of development.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Albany (New York) named John Svec and Brian Vanderlofske as assistant men's coaches. The school also selected Catherine Leahy as an assistant women's coach ... Dave Klarmann accepted responsibilities as volunteer assistant coach at Duke.

Men's soccer -- Jeb Burch was appointed as head coach at Centre to succeed Brian Chafin. Since 1994, Burch has worked as an assistant with the program ... Chestnut Hill hired Shawn Ferris as head men's and women's coach. The men's program is scheduled to begin varsity competition by 2004, and the women's program is slated to start by 2003. Ferris has been head women's coach at Albright ... Austin Daniels accepted responsibilities as head men's and women's coach at Mercyhurst.

Men's soccer assistant -- North Carolina added Carlos Somoano as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Rhode Island College's Nicole Barber resigned as head coach. Barber has guided the program since 1995. The school elevated top assistant Hector Cardona to interim head coach.

Women's soccer assistant -- Frank Pelaez was elevated to associate head coach at Marquette. In addition to serving as an assistant women's coach for six seasons, Pelaez also was an assistant men's coach last season.

Softball assistant -- Misty Clement accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Rhode Island ... Marcy Potts Roff was named as an assistant coach and head pitching coach at Central (Iowa). Roff has been head girls' coach at the high-school level for the past three seasons.

Men's and women's tennis -- Brian Rahaley resigned after one season as head men's coach at Birmingham-Southern, effective at the end of the season. Rahaley also was head cross country coach from 1998 to 2001 ... Jennifer Diprete resigned as head women's coach at Massachusetts-Boston.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Florida State named Todd Kress as head women's coach ... Richard Nold was appointed head coach at Jacksonville State ... Perri Hankins was named as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth to replace Cheryl Carlson. Hankins has been head coach at Campbell for the past two seasons ... Massachusetts-Boston chose Stephen Cribbin as head women's coach ... Saint Mary's (California) hired Jon Stevenson as head women's coach. For the past two seasons, Stevenson has worked as head women's coach at Sonoma State.

STAFF

Development -- Texas elevated Haila Kauffman to director of annual giving with the Longhorn Foundation, where she has been associate director. The school also promoted David Onion to director of the Longhorn Legacy (major gifts) with the Longhorn Foundation, where he most recently worked as associate director.

Marketing/promotions -- Teri Pierce, marketing manager at Texas, was elevated to director of marketing.

Strength and conditioning -- Dave Kennedy was appointed as strength and conditioning coach at Pittsburgh ... UCLA added Kim Sword as head strength and conditioning coach. Sword, who has been head strength and conditioning coordinator at San Jose State since 1999, succeeds Mike Linn.

CONFERENCES

The Atlantic 10 Conference selected Jim Satalin as coordinator of men's basketball officials ... Joe Menaugh was hired as assistant director of media relations/championships at the Western Athletic Conference. For the past year, Menaugh has been a media relations graduate assistant with the NFL's Denver Broncos.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Diane Dickman was named as managing director of membership services at the national office. Dickman has been a director of membership services ... Leeland Zeller was selected as a membership services representative at the national office, effective April 1. Zeller has been director of compliance at Washington State ... Jim Johnson resigned after four years as a membership services representative.

AGREEMENTS

The Las Vegas Bowl entered a two-year agreement with the Pacific-10 Conference and extended its contract with the Mountain West Conference for three years. The bowl highlights the fifth and second selections of the Pacific-10 and the Mountain West Conferences, respectively.

The AXA Liberty Bowl and ESPN extended their contract by seven years, and ESPN will have national television rights to the bowl through 2008. The Liberty Bowl features the top teams from Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference.

NAME CHANGE

Eastern College has officially changed its name to Eastern University.

NOTABLES

The All-American Football Foundation announced the following as the 2001 Colonel Earl "Red" Blaik Leadership Scholarship honorees: Rocky Calmus, Oklahoma; Joey Harrington, Oregon; Eric Crouch, Nebraska; George Godsey, Georgia Tech; Brandon Doman, Brigham Young; Mike Williams, Texas; Carl Morris, Harvard; Dwight Freeney, Syracuse; Brian McKimmie, Miami (Florida); Jeff Hatch, Pennsylvania; and Terrence Metcalf, Mississippi. Each school will be awarded $500 for its general scholarship fund in the names of the winners.

DEATHS

Former St. Bonaventure head golf coach Leon Keenan Jr. died January 27. Keenan was 80

.

Cornelius Patterson, former football player at Texas A&M, died February 19. Patterson, 32, was waiting for a kidney transplant. A sociology instructor and counselor at Blinn College, Patterson played at Texas A&M from 1987 to 1990 and had 24 receptions for 374 yards and three touchdowns. Additionally, he competed with the baseball team in 1990 and with the track team in 1989.

Mary Ann Lazzarini, former head coach at Chico State, died of cancer February 21. She was 49. Lazzarini, who had been in her 13th year as head coach before stepping down in January, guided the program to a 190-145 mark.

Gene Sullivan, former head men's basketball coach at Loyola (Illinois), died February 21 at the age of 70. Sullivan led the program from 1980 to 1989 and also worked as athletics director at DePaul from 1975 to 1978. For the past five years, Sullivan had worked as a radio analyst for DePaul.

Former Columbia football player Bill Wazevich died February 21 at the age of 54. Wazevich, who played on the team in the 1960s, holds the school record for receiving yards in game with 214.

Floyd "Shorty" Hitchcock, head men's wrestling coach at Millersville, died February 16 after an eight-month illness. He was 50. Hitchcock, who had been head coach since 1984, led the school to NCAA Division I East Regional titles in 1992, 1993 and 2001.

Former Harvard tennis and squash coach John M. Barnaby died February 13. He was 92. Barnaby led the men's tennis and squash teams from 1937 to 1976, in addition to serving as head women's squash coach from 1979 to 1982. Barnaby also spent 10 years as a special assistant to the tennis and squash programs at Harvard.

Pennsylvania men's golf student-athlete Michael Carter died in a car accident February 13. He was 19.

Cornelius Price, former football player at Houston, died February 13 in a motorcycle accident. Price competed on the football team for the 1988 and 1989 seasons and established a Southwest Conference record for the most interceptions in a season with 12 in 1989.

Chris Campbell, senior football starting linebacker at Miami (Florida), died February 16 in a car accident. He was 21. The three-year starter, who was a member of the 2001 national championship team, played in 41 games and compiled 221 tackles and six sacks.

Former Buena Vista Athletics Director Jim Hershberger passed away January 25. Hershberger came to the school in 1970 as head football coach. In 20 years, he captured three Iowa Conference championships and compiled a 121-61-1 mark. Hershberger was named athletics director in 1989 and continued in that role until his retirement in 1994.

Jay Beekmann, former head baseball coach and athletics director at Buena Vista, died December 6. During a 31-year tenure as head baseball coach, Beekmann earned eight Iowa Conference championships.

John Naughton, a former coach at Buena Vista, died in August 2001 at the age of 73. He served as head football coach from 1963 to 1969 and worked as head women's basketball coach for 16 years. Additionally, Naughton also completed tenures as head golf and wrestling coach at the school.
