Weller retires from Maryland's women's post

Chris Weller has retired after 27 seasons as head women's basketball coach at Maryland.

Weller joined the program as an assistant coach in 1973 and was promoted to head coach two years later. During her tenure, she has guided the Terrapins to eight Atlantic Coast Conference championships and Women's Final Four appearances in 1978, 1982 and 1989. Weller, who closes her tenure with a 499-286 record, was named Naismith National Coach of the Year in 1992 and was recognized as Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year in 1989 and 1992.

Weller was a four-year letter-winner in basketball at Maryland. Additionally, she competed on the swimming and lacrosse teams. She graduated in 1966 and spent several years coaching and teaching at John F. Kennedy (Maryland) High School before returning to Maryland.

Dayton appointed Daniel J. Curran as president, effective July 1. Curran has been executive vice-president and vice-president for academic affairs at St. Joseph's ... Minnesota State-Mankato chose Richard Davenport as president, effective July 1. Davenport most recently has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Central Michigan ... Vera King Farris resigned as president at Richard Stockton, effective January 3, 2003 ... Hank Brown resigned as president at Northern Colorado, effective in June ... Fort Valley State named Kofi Lomotey as president. Lomotey has been senior vice-president and provost at Medgar Evers ... Rider's J. Barton Luedeke resigned as president, effective in June 2003 ... Carleton appointed Robert A. Oden Jr. as president, effective July 1. Oden has been president at Kenyon ... Norman Samuels, president at Rutgers-Newark, resigned, effective June 30, but will continue to serve on the faculty as a political science professor ... Franklin and Marshall named John Anderson Fry as president. Fry most recently has been executive vice-president at Pennsylvania ... Roger Taylor was elevated to president at Knox after most recently fulfilling the position on an interim basis.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Mike Maguire was promoted to athletics director at Eastern New Mexico after filling the position on an interim basis since June 2001. Maguire has been head volleyball coach at the school since 1987 and will retain head coaching responsibilities ... Judy Burling will retire as athletics director at Regis (Massachusetts), effective June 30, 2002. Burling has served as athletics director since 1982 ... Earlham's Porter Miller announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective June 30. Miller has worked as director of athletics at the school since 1985 ... Kentucky's Larry Ivy resigned as athletics director. The school announced Terry Mobley as interim athletics director. Mobley serves as director of development at the school ... Raymond R. Gilbert announced plans to retire as director of physical education and athletics at Worcester Polytechnic, effective at the end of the academic year. Gilbert has been athletics director since October 1987 and formerly was an assistant athletics director at Springfield in addition to coaching golf, soccer and basketball ... Hawaii's Hugh Yoshida announced plans to retire, effective December 31. Yoshida was named interim athletics director in January 1993 and assumed permanent responsibilities in October 1993.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
OF ATHLETICS

John Sirignano was selected as assistant athletics director for internal operations at North Dakota. From 1996 to 2001, Sirignano was assistant general manager for baseball operations for MLB's Pittsburgh Pirates.

COACHES

Baseball assistant -- Denny Bowers assumed duties as an assistant coach at Susquehanna.

Men's basketball -- Virginia Commonwealth's Mack McCarthy resigned as head coach, effective at the end of the season. McCarthy guided the program to a 66-55 record in four years. McCarthy will continue to be associated with the athletics department. The school elevated Jeff Capel III to head coach. Capel just completed his first season as an assistant with the program and previously spent the 2000-01 season as an assistant at Old Dominion ... Liberty released head coach Mel Hankinson, who has been head coach since 1998. The school chose Randy Dunton as Hankinson's successor ... Grafton Young resigned as head coach at Newberry ... Pat Kennedy resigned as head coach at DePaul. He had been head coach there for five years ... Jim Molinari was released as head coach at Bradley, closing an 11-season stint with a 174-152 mark. The school promoted Al Biancalana to interim head coach. Biancalana has been an assistant for three seasons ... Central Oklahoma head coach Jim Seward resigned after 15 years. Seward has fulfilled head coaching responsibilities since 1987 and has led the program to six Lone Star Conference championships ... Mars Hill's Steve Roberts resigned as head coach. Roberts guided the team for three seasons.

Women's basketball -- Grand Valley State head coach Claudette Charney resigned ... Lamar will not renew the contract of head coach DeAnn Craft, who has led the program for four years ... Bob Foley resigned as head coach at Richmond. Foley has been head coach since 1996 ... Barb Smith was released as head coach at San Diego State after five seasons ... Charles Mancil resigned as head coach at Texas A&M-Commerce ... Iona will not renew the contract of head coach Michele Brusseau ... Jenny Przekwas was released as head coach at Washington State ... Massachusetts will not renew the contract of head coach Joanie O'Brien. O'Brien has spent the past 11 years as head coach at the school ... Gay Nix resigned after six years as head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette ... Akron will not renew the contract of head coach Roxanne Allen. Allen served as head coach for five seasons ... Franklin Pierce's Sarah Behn resigned after two seasons ... Wayne Moore announced plans to retire as head coach at Eastern New Mexico. During his 22-year tenure as head coach, Moore has compiled a 315-261 record and captured a Lone Star Conference championship in 1993.

Men's and women's cross country -- Greg Huffaker was hired as head men's cross country and track and field coach at Elmhurst. Since July 2000, Huffaker has been an assistant cross country and track and field coach at North Central.

Football -- Delaware hired K.C. Keeler as head coach. Keeler, who succeeds the retired Tubby Raymond, has been head coach at Rowan for nine years ... Jim Fleming, head coach at Sacred Heart, resigned to accept responsibilities as defensive backs and special teams coach at North Carolina. Fleming has led the Sacred Heart program to a 21-1 mark in two seasons. Sacred Heart elevated Bill Lacey, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for two seasons, as Fleming's successor ... Darren Rizzi resigned as head coach at New Haven to become an assistant at Rutgers. Rizzi has been head coach, defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator at New Haven for three seasons.

Football assistants -- Danny Hope was selected as offensive line coach at Louisville to replace Art Valero, who resigned to accept a position with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For the past five seasons, Hope has worked as offensive line coach at Purdue ... Cincinnati named Dino Dawson as cornerbacks coach and Mark Criner as linebackers coach ... Paul Chryst was appointed as tight ends coach at Wisconsin ... Matt Luke was chosen as the tight ends and tackles and assistant offensive line coach at Mississippi. Luke has been offensive line coach at Murray State ... Navy named Shaine Miles as an assistant defensive line coach ... Jim Bridge was awarded duties as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan ... Marquis Mosely was added as an assistant coach at Army ... East Tennessee State named Steve Wilkes as an assistant coach and codefensive coordinator. The school also elevated Billy Taylor to codefensive coordinator ... Todd Bradford was selected as defensive secondary coach at Middle Tennessee ... Oregon State hired Noel Mazzone as running backs coach and special teams coordinator. Mazzone spent three seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Auburn before resigning at the end of this past season. The school also moved Dan Cozzetto to tight ends coach and assistant offensive line coach. Cozetto has been running backs coach at the school for two years ... Jimmy Ray Stephens was appointed as offensive line coach at Tennessee ... Mississippi's Richard Bisaccia resigned to assume responsibilities as special teams coach with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bisaccia has been with the program for three seasons and was named assistant head coach before the 2000 season ... Southern California hired Tim Davis as offensive guards and centers coach and Steve Sarkisian as quarterbacks coach. Davis has spent the past five years as an assistant coach at Wisconsin and Sarkisian has been quarterbacks coach at San Diego State. The school also announced that tight ends coach Lane Kiffin will move to wide receivers coach and offensive line coach Keith Uperesa will move to offensive tackles and tight ends coach ... Will Muschamp was promoted to defensive coordinator at LSU. Muschamp, who replaces Gary Gibbs, was linebackers coach. Kirk Doll, who has worked as an assistant coach at Notre Dame for the past eight years and has served as assistant head coach since 1997, was named as Muschamp's successor as linebackers coach ... Charles Kelly was added as secondary coach at Nicholls State. For the past two seasons, Kelly has worked as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the high-school level in Alabama ... Brown elevated Abbott Burrell to assistant head coach. Burrell has been an assistant with the program since 1994 and has worked as secondary coach for the past four years ... Memphis selected Craig Boller as defensive line coach ... Middle Tennessee elevated Kevin Fouquier to assistant coach and named Steve Campbell as offensive coordinator, Blake Anderson as wide receivers coach and Fred Tate as defensive line coach ... Mac McWhorter was hired as offensive tackles and tight ends coach at Texas after working as offensive line and assistant head coach and most recently serving as interim head coach at Georgia Tech. McWhorter replaces Tim Brewster, who became an assistant with the NFL's San Diego Chargers ... Mercyhurst added Terry Grier as defensive line coach. For the past two years, Grier has been a graduate assistant/running backs coach at Wayne State (Michigan) ... Southern California chose Greg Burns as secondary coach. Burns has fulfilled responsibilities as cornerbacks coach at Louisville for the past four seasons ... Kyle Nystrom was hired as linebackers coach and David Bailiff was elevated to defensive coordinator at Texas Christian. Nystrom and Bailiff replaced Chuck Driesbach, who resigned to become defensive coordinator at Mississippi. Nystrom has been an assistant at Western Michigan for 13 seasons. Bailiff has completed one season with the school. Texas Christian also promoted offensive line coach Eddie Williamson to assistant head coach ... Mississippi State added Rocky Felker as coordinator of football operations and Curley Hallman as defensive backs coach. Hallman formerly was head coach at LSU from 1991 to 1994 and Felker formerly was head coach at Mississippi State from 1986 to 1990. ... Paul Jette was promoted to defensive coordinator and Darrell Patterson was named as linebackers coach at Baylor. Jette and Patterson replace Brick Haley, who accepted assistant coaching duties at Georgia Tech. Jette has been secondary coach at the school, and Patterson spent last season as linebackers coach at Arkansas State ... Jeffrey L. Thompson was hired as director of football operations, recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach at Heidelberg. Thompson formerly was an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Independence (Kansas) Community College during the 2000 season and most recently has been in private business ... LSU's Gary Gibbs resigned to become linebackers coach with the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Gibbs spent the 2001 season as defensive coordinator at LSU.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Bentley named Ryan Soderquist as head coach to replace Jim McAdam, who resigned. Soderquist has been an assistant with the program ... North Dakota hired Shantel Gammie as head women's coach. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition next fall. Gammie has been associate women's coach at Maine.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Emily Johnson was hired as head women's coach at Keene State to replace Carrie Moura. Johnson most recently completed a stint as a four-year member and three-year captain on the Salve Regina lacrosse team.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Brooks Johnson was named as an assistant women's coach at Keene State ... Andrew DeCicco accepted responsibilities as assistant men's coach at Lafayette ... Gordon Galloway was appointed as an assistant coach at Susquehanna.

Men's and women's rowing -- Bryn Mawr hired Carol Bower as head rowing coach. Bower, who has been part-time head rowing coach at the school for the past six seasons, was head women's rowing coach at Pennsylvania from 1987 to 1996 and also was an assistant with the U.S. Rowing National Team.

Men's soccer -- Roger Williams was added as head coach at Newberry ... UCLA named Tom Fitzgerald as head coach. Fitzgerald was head coach of the MSL's Columbus Crew from 1996 to 2001 and formerly was head coach at Tampa from 1987 to 1996 ... Adrian Blewitt was chosen as head coach at Lees-McRae. For the past five seasons, Blewitt, who succeeds Jeremy Yelton, has worked as head coach at Methodist ... Rob Miller accepted head coaching duties at Anderson (South Carolina). Miller was head coach at Cumberland (Kentucky) College.

Men's soccer assistant -- Mark Dougherty was hired as an assistant coach at Bowling Green. Since 1998, Dougherty has served a goaltender for MLS's Columbus Crew.

Women's soccer -- Karen Parker was named as head coach at Carleton. The former head coach at Rhode Island also has been an assistant at Washington, Yale and Wisconsin ... Jodie Stranges resigned as head coach at Capital. Stranges guided the program to a 31-23-2 mark in two years. The school awarded additional responsibilities as head women's coach to Dwight Burgess, who has been head men's soccer coach for two seasons ... Indiana Wesleyan named John Bratcher as head coach to replace Joe Thoma. Bratcher has been head men's soccer coach and an associate professor at Lee University.

Women's soccer assistant -- Ja'net Esparza was awarded responsibilities as an assistant coach at Birmingham-Southern. Esparza most recently has been an assistant women's coach at UTEP.

Softball assistant -- Susquehanna chose Jim Hane as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- John Martellino was selected as interim head men's coach at Rhode Island College to succeed Dick Ernst, who stepped down after 12 years. Since last spring, Martellino has been an assistant men's coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts).

Men's and women's track and field -- Regis (Massachusetts) added Sinead Delahunty Evans as head coach. Evans competed in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Chris Campbell resigned as head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette. Campbell guided the program for three years ... Stevens Tech named Jefferson O'Connell as head women's coach and assistant director of campus recreation. O'Connell formerly was an assistant women's coach at Ferris State and most recently has been a graduate assistant at Brockport State since 2000 ... Candace Moats was hired as head women's coach at Indiana Wesleyan to replace interim head coach Ken Carver. Moats has been head coach at Grace College ... Jennifer Hanely was selected as head volleyball and head softball coach at Illinois College, effective July 1. Most recently, Hanely has been an assistant volleyball coach and student athletic trainer at Tiffin ... Texas Lutheran's Phil Jackson resigned as head women's coach. Jackson has guided the program to two American Southwest Conference titles and a 35-18 overall record in two years as head coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Bowling Green added Jeff Belmonte as an assistant coach. Belmonte has been an assistant at Cornerstone University and formerly was an assistant at Pittsburgh for three seasons ... Georgia Tech named Sally Schulte as an assistant coach.

STAFF

Strength and conditioning -- Gene Mirra was chosen as head strength and conditioning coach at Saint Mary's (California). Mirra has worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at California since 1999.

CONFERENCES

Elizabeth Kane was appointed as assistant commissioner for compliance at the Atlantic 10 Conference, succeeding Jackie Campbell, who accepted responsibilities at Connecticut. Since August 1999, Kane has worked as an enforcement representative at the NCAA national office.

ASSOCIATIONS

Rick Walls was promoted to director of operations at the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Walls has been with the organization for more than nine years.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Brad Hostetter, Bridget Niland and Lisa Roesler were elevated to membership representative II. Hostetter, Niland and Roesler were all membership service representatives at the national office.

Mark Herrmann was reclassified to manager of the Hall of Champions education programs.

Mary Eiland was reclassified as associate director of promotions and special events after serving most recently as an assistant director of promotions.

REPRIMANDS

The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Committee has reprimanded University of Southern California head coach Mark Schubert and assistant coach Erika Hansen for their behavior at the 2001 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Specifically, Schubert instructed Hansen to deliberately delay the meet by throwing a swim cap into the water. As a result of this behavior, the committee has issued a public reprimand.

DEATHS

Hugh M. Gloster Sr., president emeritus at Morehouse, died February 16. Gloster was 90.

Dana Marie Black, a softball player at Marshall, died recently. She was 19. Black played shortstop and was a sophomore criminal justice major.

Wesley D. Jordan, former head athletic trainer at Maine, died of pancreatic cancer February 26. Jordan spent 32 years as head athletic trainer at the school before retiring in 1997. Most recently, he had been teaching at Husson and serving as a part-time athletic trainer at the middle school level.

Former Tennessee State basketball coach Edward Martin died February 25 at the age of 75. Martin served as head men's coach from 1968 to 1985 and led the program to a 301-143 mark. He also was head coach at South Carolina State.

Kevin Dare, a member of Penn State's track and field team, died after sustaining a head injury when he fell during a pole vault attempt at the Big Ten Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships. Dare, 19, was a sophomore.

Ellis Jones, a former offensive lineman at Tulsa, died February 24. He was 80. Jones, who competed with one arm because his right arm was amputated when he was 11, helped the school compile a 24-4-1 record from 1942 to 1944.

Former athletics director at Eastern Washington Ron Raver died of cancer March 1. Raver spent 11 years as athletics director at the school and also completed tenures as head tennis, assistant basketball and assistant and head baseball coach. He officially retired in 2000, but continued to assist with athletics special events and fund-raising.
