Indianapolis promotes Willey to director

Indianapolis has promoted Sue Willey to director of athletics, effective July 1. Willey succeeds David Huffman, who is retiring after 37 years at the school, the last eight as athletics director.

Willey, a member of the NCAA Division II Management Council, has spent 27 years at Indianapolis. She has been associate athletics director for 16 years and has been senior woman administrator since 1995. She also serves as a liaison to the NCAA Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In addition to working as an associate professor of health and physical education for more than 25 years, Willey also formerly coached five sports at the school over the course of 23 years.

In four years as a student-athlete at Indianapolis, Willey earned 19 varsity letters and was the school's reigning female athlete of the year from 1972 to 1975.

Willey earned a bachelor's degree from Indianapolis in 1975 and earned a master's degree and a doctorate from Indiana.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Richard A. Detweiler announced he will resign as president at Hartwick, effective in June.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Marshall's interim athletics director Bob Marcum was awarded a two-year contract extension through June 2005. Marcum, formerly athletics director at Massachusetts, has been with the school for the past five months ... Ken Riley was released as director of athletics at Florida A&M. Riley came to the school in 1986 and spent eight seasons as head football coach before assuming athletics director responsibilities. The school announced Bobby Lee will assume interim athletics director responsibilities.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Rose-Hulman awarded Jon Prevo with additional responsibilities as associate athletics director. Prevo also serves as golf coach and assistant men's basketball coach ... St. John's (New York) named Patrick J. Elliott as associate athletics director for planning and internal operations. The school also promoted Dennis Myron to associate athletics director for ticket operations and Dominic Scianna to associate athletics director for athletics communications ... Deborah Davis was elevated to associate athletics director at Tusculum. Davis, who has been with the school for eight years, most recently has been an athletics administrative assistant and will continue as senior woman administrator ... Wisconsin named Jamie Pollard as senior associate athletics director for administration and finance, Cheryl Marra as senior associate athletics director for sports administration, Vince Sweeney as senior associate athletics director for external relations and Doug Beard as associate athletics director for facilities and events. Pollard, Marra, Sweeney and Beard take over for former associate athletics director Al Fish, who was named as associate vice-chancellor for facilities planning management at the school. Pollard was awarded additional duties in the oversight of capital projects. Marra, who will continue as senior woman administrator, assumed additional responsibilities in equipment inventory operations, and Sweeney accepted additional duties in oversight of video and technical services and the University Ridge Golf Course. Beard was awarded additional responsibilities in overseeing facility and maintenance operations ... Carla Williams was selected as associate director of athletics for Olympic sports at Vanderbilt ... Texas Tech appointed Craig Wells as associate athletics director for external operations.

COACHES

Men's basketball assistants -- Illinois hired Tim Jankovich as an assistant coach and promoted Norm Roberts to associate head coach. Jankovich has been associate head coach at Vanderbilt for three seasons and replaces Billy Gillispie. Roberts enters his third season with the program ... Dan Muller was chosen as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt ... David Jordan, Mike Frew and Keith Allison were named as assistants at Moravian. Jordan has been with Anaconda Sports, and Frew most recently completed a four-year playing career with the school. Allison spent last season as an assistant coach at Quakertown (Pennsylvania) High School. Frew and Allison also will coach the junior varsity squad at Moravian.

Women's basketball -- Regis (Massachusetts) hired Anthony Staffiere as head coach to succeed Wendy Rogers, who resigned after two years. Staffiere was an assistant men's coach at Onandaga (New York) Community College last season.

Women's basketball assistants -- Rensselaer named David Decker as an assistant ... Moravian hired Amy Endler as an assistant. Endler has been head girls' basketball coach at Roselle Park (New Jersey) High School since 1996 and also was head field hockey coach at the school from 1994 to 2001.

Men's and women's cross country -- Matt Haugen was hired as head men's cross country coach and assistant men's track and field coach at Macalester. Haugen, who replaces Steve Pasche, has been an elite performance coach since 2000.

Football -- Newberry released Mike Taylor as head coach. Taylor guided the program for 11 years ... Otterbein announced it will not renew the contract of Rocky Alt, head coach for the past two seasons ... Vic Koenning was released after three seasons as head coach at Wyoming, effective at the end of the season ... Russ Mollet resigned as head coach at Rose-Hulman. Mollet, who was head coach for four years, will become an assistant football coach and will continue as an assistant track and field coach ... Merchant Marine named 11-year assistant coach Tim McNulty as head coach to replace Charlie Pravata. McNulty, who has been offensive coordinator and offensive line coach since 1995, will relinquish assistant athletics director duties he has fulfilled since 2000 ... Gary Howard was released as head coach at Central Oklahoma. Howard has guided the program since 1977 ... Mike Collins was named as head coach at Louisiana-Monroe after most recently serving in an interim capacity. Collins, who succeeds Bobby Keasler, has been an assistant with the program ... Austin Peay State will not renew the contract of Bill Schmitz, head coach since 1997. The school announced Steve Haywood, defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, as interim head coach ... John Snell was appointed head coach at Baldwin-Wallace ... Concord will not renew the contract of head coach Ollie Pottmeyer ... Craig Johnston resigned as head coach at Upper Iowa ... Charleston Southern's David Dowd resigned as head coach ... Donald Dykes was promoted to interim head coach at Fort Valley State after most recently serving as defensive coordinator ... C. Ray Gregory was released as head coach at Southern Utah. Gregory has guided the program for six seasons ... Bob DeBesse was released after six seasons as head coach at Southwest Texas and reassigned within the university ... Utah released Ron McBride as head coach. During a 13-season tenure, McBride led the school to six bowl appearances ... Sacramento State released John Volek after eight years as head coach ... Robert Hughes was released as head coach at Jackson State. Hughes has been head coach since 1999 ... Lou Holtz was awarded a one-year contract extension through 2007 as head coach at South Carolina. Holtz has been with the school for four seasons ... Columbia released Ray Tellier as head coach. Tellier, who has been head coach for 14 seasons, will continue with the school as an assistant athletics director ... Dana Dimel was released after three seasons as head coach at Houston ... Norfolk State's Maurice Forte resigned as head coach after four years ... Chris Tormey was awarded a one-year contract extension through the 2004 season as head coach at Nevada. Tormey has guided the program since 2000 ... Ball State released head coach Bill Lynch after eight years. Lynch will be reassigned within the university ... Keith Burns resigned as head coach at Tulsa. Burns joined the program after the 1999 season ... Texas A&M released R.C. Slocum as head coach. In 14 seasons, Slocum led teams to four conference championships.

Football assistants -- Jim Helms resigned as running backs coach at Illinois ... Eastern Michigan will not renew the contract of defensive coordinator Billy Harris ... Nebraska released Craig Bohl as defensive coordinator, George Darlington as secondary coach and Nelson Barnes as rush ends coach. Bohl has been defensive coordinator since 2000. Darlington has been an assistant with the program for 30 years, and Barnes has been rush ends coach since 1997 ... Sparky Woods was released as offensive coordinator and Joe Lee Dunn was released as defensive coordinator at Mississippi State. The school also let go of wide receivers coach Craig Stump, offensive line coach Carroll McCray and defensive line coach John Hendrick.

Men's and women's golf -- Jason Hughes assumed additional duties as head women's coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian. The program is scheduled to begin competition in 2003-04. Hughes will continue as head men's golf coach, a position he has held since August 2002.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Clarkson released head coach Mark Morris. Morris has been with the program for 15 years. The school named Fred Parker as interim head coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Sarah Martin was elevated to associate head women's coach at Dartmouth.

Men's soccer -- Tom Waters was released as head coach at Aurora ... CCNY's Raymond D'Argenio resigned as head coach.

Women's soccer -- Rudy Medina resigned as head coach at CCNY ... Mars Hill head coach David Bennett resigned after 11 years ... Albany (New York) head coach Joanna Tomasino will not return next season ... Dawn Crow resigned as head coach at Duquesne.

Softball -- Grand Canyon hired Ann Pedersen as head coach. The program is set to begin competition in the spring of 2004. From 1994 to 2001, Pedersen worked as an assistant coach at Arizona State.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Jeremy Kipp was promoted to head assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara. The school also hired Brandon Seider as an assistant men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- CCNY chose Esu Ma'at as head men's coach ... Northern Iowa named Sachin Kirtane as head women's coach ... Johnson and Wales chose Adam Spring as head men's coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Franklin & Marshall chose Dan Massey as an assistant.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Jewel McRoberts resigned as head women's coach at College of Charleston, effective at the end of the season ... Tusculum's Beth Birky resigned as head coach. Birky has been with the school since 1997 ... Michelle Peterson resigned after four years as head coach at Lewis and Clark ... Jeff Lipton resigned as head men's coach at Adelphi. The school announced Joe Chojnacki as interim head coach ... Mount Saint Vincent tabbed assistant coach Patrick Dietz as interim head men's coach. Dietz succeeds Karl France, who resigned after three years ... Tiffin's Melissa DeRan resigned as head coach ... Jennie Gilbert resigned as head women's coach at Tennessee Tech ... South Alabama head coach Ginger Mayson resigned after six seasons.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- New York University named Karl France as an assistant men's coach.

Wrestling assistant -- Dane Tabano was chosen as an assistant at New York University.

STAFF

Administrative -- Texas Tech named Brad Haynes as director of corporate sales-athletics and selected Paige Holland as licensing coordinator of special projects-athletics.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Matthew Rowlett was added as an assistant athletic trainer at Westminster (Missouri). Rowlett, who succeeds Jen Pipkin, has been an assistant athletic trainer and instructor at Missouri Southern State since August 2001.

Development assistant -- St. John's (New York) promoted Annemarie Carey to assistant director of development.

Sports information assistants -- St. John's (New York) elevated Allison Rubin to assistant director of athletics communications and Mike Carey to associate director of athletics communications.

DEATHS

Ben Plucknett, a former track and field student-athlete at Missouri, died November 17. Plucknett, 48, set the world discus record twice in 1981 at 71.20 meters/233 feet, 7 inches and 72.34 meters/237 feet, 4 inches. The latter mark continues to stand as the American record.

Former Alabama football player Cecil Dowdy Jr. was killed in a hunting accident November 24. He was 57. Dowdy, an offensive tackle, was an all-American selection in 1966 and helped Alabama capture national championships in 1964 and 1965.

Gil Craker, sports information director at Northwest Nazarene, died November 13. He was 62. Craker had been with the school since 1986.

Brandon Fails, a football player at Texas A&M, died November 25 of a blood clot in the lungs that formed as a result of a knee injury. Fails, a freshman defensive lineman, competed in four games before suffering the knee injury and undergoing surgery.

Former Ithaca football coach Philip "Jim" Butterfield, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease. Butterfield led the program from 1967 to 1993 and earned NCAA Division III national championships in 1979, 1988 and 1991.
