Goodman named as associate commissioner

The Colonial Athletic Association has appointed Robert L. Goodman as senior associate commissioner for marketing and development.

Most recently, Goodman has served as an assistant state manager for Colonial Supplemental Insurance Company for two years. There he was responsible for recruiting, training and supervising new agents in the state of Virginia. Before entering the insurance industry, Goodman spent a year as assistant director of the Student Aid Foundation at Virginia. He also worked as director of sales, marketing and promotions at William and Mary from 1994 to 1999. Goodman also completed a two-year stint with the Richmond Braves, the AAA affiliate of the MLB's Atlanta Braves, fulfilling duties as ticket sales manager and group sales manager.

Goodman is a graduate of Virginia with a degree in sports marketing.

GENERAL

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

William M. Chace announced plans to retire as president at Emory, effective at the end of the academic year. Chace will continue with the school as a teacher after a one-year sabbatical ... Central Arkansas named Lu Hardin as president. Hardin has been director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education ... Weber State's Paul H. Thompson retired as president. After a sabbatical, Thompson will return to the school to teach.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Cincinnati athletics director Bob Goin was awarded a two-year contract extension. Goin has fulfilled athletics director responsibilities since October 1997 ... Bill Byrne was hired as director of athletics at Texas A&M to replace Wally Groff. Byrne has been director of athletics at Nebraska since 1992 ... Robert Parker assumed additional responsibilities as director of athletics at West Virginia State. Parker, who has been with the school for 10 years, will continue as executive assistant to the president ... Nebraska announced Joe Selig as interim athletics director to replace Bill Byrne. Selig has been with the school for 26 years and has spent the last four as senior associate athletics director for external operations ... G. Larry James was chosen as dean of athletics and recreational programs and services at Richard Stockton. James has been with the school since 1972 and most recently has been associate dean of students/director of athletics and recreation.

SENIOR WOMAN
ADMINISTRATOR

Kelly Smith resigned as senior woman administrator and head women's soccer and head softball coach at Thomas. Smith has been with the school since 1994.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Providence promoted Mark Devine to senior associate athletics director and elevated Joseph D'Antonio to associate athletics director for compliance/business office ... Dave Gantt was named as senior associate athletics director for external operations at Montana State. Gantt will relinquish responsibilities as head women's volleyball coach after fulfilling the post for nine years.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Denise Dietrich was awarded additional duties as an assistant athletics director and Sean Loyd assumed additional responsibilities as assistant athletics director for operations at West Virginia State. Dietrich will continue as senior woman administrator and head softball coach. Loyd will retain duties as an assistant baseball coach ... South Carolina hired Marlynn R. Jones as assistant athletics director for NCAA compliance. Jones, who replaces Craig Curry, has been assistant commissioner for compliance and external affairs at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

COACHES

Baseball -- Wayne State (Michigan) promoted Jay Alexander to head coach to succeed the late Rod George. Alexander has been an assistant since 1998.

Men's basketball -- Maritime (New York) selected Dave Summa as head coach. Summa was assistant head coach with the school in 2001-02 ... Bill Self, head coach at Illinois, was awarded a three-year contract extension.

Men's basketball assistant -- John Gleason was appointed as an assistant coach at Western New England.

Women's basketball assistants -- Western New England chose Mary Romano as an assistant coach ... Rhode Island tabbed Julie Amalfitano as an assistant coach.

Football -- Tiffin's Cam Cruickshank resigned as head coach ... Steve Logan resigned as head coach at East Carolina. Since assuming head coaching responsibilities in 1992, Logan has guided the team to five bowl appearances ... Bucknell hired Tim Landis as head coach to succeed Tom Gadd, who resigned due to health concerns. Landis has most recently served as head coach at St. Mary's (California) ... Mark Mangino was awarded a one-year contract extension, through the 2007 season, as head coach at Kansas. Mangino has been head coach since December 2001 ... Texas A&M hired Dennis Franchione as head coach. Franchione, who replaces R.C. Slocum, was head coach at Alabama for two years ... Danny Hope was named as head coach at Eastern Kentucky. Hope, who replaces Roy Kidd, has been offensive line coach at Louisville ... Houston appointed Art Briles as head coach to replace Dana Dimel. For the past three years, Briles has worked as running backs coach at Texas Tech ... Prairie View head coach Larry Dorsey resigned after three seasons ... Mike Santiago was awarded a contract extension through the 2004 season as head coach at Stephen F. Austin. Santiago has guided the program for four seasons ... Franklin & Marshall's Tom Gilburg announced his retirement after serving as head coach since 1975. Gilburg formerly was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach and assistant men's lacrosse coach at Hofstra from 1966 to 1970 and also was head men's lacrosse coach and football linebackers coach at Lehigh ... Colorado College head coach Greg Polnasek resigned as head coach but will continue as director of operations in the athletics department. Polnasek has guided the program since 1997. The school named Jim Ryan, assistant coach and defensive coordinator, as interim head coach ... Gary Andersen was hired as head coach at Southern Utah to replace C. Ray Gregory. For the past six seasons, Andersen has worked as an assistant at Utah. ... Bob Toledo was released after seven years as head coach at UCLA. The school tabbed Ed Kezirian as interim head coach. Kezirian most recently has been assistant director of academic services at the school and formerly was an assistant football coach at the school from 1982 to 1992 ... Lou Saban resigned as head coach at Chowan. Saban joined the school as an interim coach in 2001 and served as head coach during the 2002 season. The school elevated defensive backs coach Steve Gill to head coach ... Norfolk State hired Rick Comegy as head coach to replace Maurice Forte. As head coach at Tuskegee for the past seven years, Comegy has guided squads to four Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships ... Guy Morriss was hired as head coach at Baylor. For the past two seasons, Morriss has been head coach at Kentucky ... Rockford promoted Mike Hoskins to head coach. Hoskins, who replaces Vic Clark, has been defensive coordinator for the past two seasons ... Boise State awarded head coach Dan Hawkins with a five-year contract extension through 2008. Hawkins led the team to a berth in the Humanitarian Bowl this season ... Tennessee-Martin hired Matt Griffin as head coach. Griffin, who succeeds Sam McCorkle, has been an assistant at Maine ... Utah named Urban Meyer as head coach. Meyer, who replaces Ron McBride, has been head coach at Bowling Green for two years ... Charleston Southern hired Jay Mills as head coach to succeed David Dowd, who resigned after heading up the program for 12 years. Mills has been quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Harvard for seven years ... Carl Franks, head coach at Duke for four seasons, was awarded a three-year contract extension through the 2006 season ... Southwest Texas State named Manny Matsakis as head coach to replace Bob DeBesse. For the last two seasons, Matsakis has worked as special teams coach at Texas Tech.

Football assistants -- Mike Dietzel was released as defensive coordinator at Kent State ... Ken Schmidt retired as an assistant coach at Brigham Young. Schmidt has been with the program since 1982 and has been defensive coodinator since 1991 ... Utah State released Kraig Paulson as defensive coordinator and Carl Franks as special teams coach. Both Paulson and Franks have been with the program for three seasons ... Charles Huff was reassigned as special assistant to the athletics director on football-related matters at Central Florida after most recently serving as the school's defensive ends coach and special teams coordinator ... Mississippi State selected Ron Cooper as defensive coordinator and John Blake as defensive line coach. Cooper, who replaces Joe Lee Dunn, has been defensive backs coach at Wisconsin. Blake, who formerly coached at Oklahoma and has been working with NFL defensive linemen as an off-season instructor for four years, succeeds John Hendricks ... Texas A&M named Les Koenning Jr. as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Koenning has served as offensive coordinator at Alabama for two seasons. The school also announced Stan Eggen, Lee Fobbs, Jim Bob Helduser, Kenith Pope, Melvin Smith, Chris Thurmond and Mark Tommerdahl as assistant coaches. The school also tabbed Charley North as director of football operations. Eggen, Fobbs, Helduser, Pope, Smith, Thurmond, Tommerdahl and North were assistants at Alabama ... Wyoming chose Marty English as a defensive assistant. English has worked as an assistant at Northern Colorado since 1989 and has fulfilled defensive coordinator responsibilities since 1999.

Men's and women's golf -- Monmouth (Illinois) hired Bill Pieper as head women's coach. Pieper takes over for Bill Turner ... Pfeiffer named Jim Haughey as head women's coach. The program is scheduled to become a varsity sport in the 2004-05 season ... Carol Blackmar was hired as head women's coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Blackmar replaces Ian Freret.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Randy Mearns was elevated to full-time head men's coach at Canisius, effective July 1, 2003. Mearns enters his fifth season in charge of the program ... Mount St. Vincent hired Michael Spinner as head women's coach. Spinner has been head girls' coach at Greenwich (New York) High School ... Pfeiffer named Jason Dombrowski as head men's coach. Dombrowski succeeds Jim Fritz. The school also announced Gregg Gebhard resigned as head women's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Justin McKenna was announced as an assistant men's coach at Franklin & Marshall. Most recently, McKenna has been an assistant at Lehigh, fulfilling special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator duties.

Men's soccer -- Frank Schnur retired as head coach at Fordham ... Philadelphia U.'s John Dunlop resigned as head coach. Dunlop joined the program as an assistant in 1994 and has been head coach since 1996. ... Jim Hesch was promoted to full-time head coach at Canisius, effective July 1, 2003. Hesch begins his third season as head coach ... Longwood's Todd Dyer resigned after seven years as head men's coach. Dyer will continue as head women's coach at the school, a position he has held since 1994 ... Randy Keeler resigned as head coach at Bluffton ... Rose-Hulman awarded Brad Hauter additional responsibilities as head men's soccer coach. Hauter will continue as head women's soccer coach.

Women's soccer -- Dartmouth head coach Erica Walsh resigned ... Barry McNamara was added as head coach at Monmouth (Illinois). McNamara also serves as associate director of college communications and co-sports information director at the school.

Women's soccer assistant -- Monmouth (Illinois) tabbed Dick Johnston as an assistant coach. Johnston also serves as a professor in the school's department of political economy and commerce.

Softball assistant -- Venus Taylor was tabbed as an assistant at Georgia Tech.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- Western New England selected Lynn Schneeweis as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- St. Andrews Presbyterian added Brian Perry as head men's and women's coach. Perry most recently has worked as director of tennis and head tennis coach at Newberry.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Mike Powell, currently the world record holder in the long jump, was announced as an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton. The three-time United States Olympian and two-time Olympic silver medalist has been a volunteer assistant at the school for two years and replaces Chris Asher ... Adams State added John Wallin as an assistant coach. For the past three years, Wallin has served as an assistant coach at Dartmouth ... Dan Massey was added as an assistant at Franklin & Marshall. Massey, a 2002 graduate of the school, was a member of the 1999 Centennial Conference indoor championship team and the 2002 conference championship squad in the 800-meter relay ... Peter Nissly was appointed as an assistant at Franklin & Marshall.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Mike Lessinger resigned as head coach at Ohio ... Montana State promoted Miya Malauulu as head women's coach to succeed Dave Gantt, who become a senior associate athletics director at the school. Malauulu has been an assistant for five years ... Jeff Boyland was promoted to head coach at Central Oklahoma. Boyland takes over for Mark Herrin, who resigned after 13 years, but will continue as director of the school's wellness left. Boyland has spent the last year as an assistant ... Sue Uebel resigned as head women's coach at Ashland ... Jeff Hulsmeyer was released as head coach at Purdue ... Creighton head coach Howard Wallace resigned after six seasons. The school named assistant coach Julie Korfcheck as interim head coach ... Salley Palmer resigned as head coach at Lander, effective at the end of the semester. Palmer has been with the school since last spring.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Jerry Wagner was promoted to associate head women's coach at Montana State. Wagner has been with the program for four seasons.

Men's and women's water polo -- Cal State San Bernardino hired Tom Finwall as head women's coach to replace Danielle Altman. Finwall, currently a high school math teacher, was head boys' and girls' swimming coach from 1990 to 2002 and was boys' and girls' water polo coach from 1998 to 2002 at John W. North (California) High School.

STAFF

Academic services -- Cal State Fullerton added Jermaine Holmes as academic advisor for athletics. Holmes has been director of student life at Virginia Tech for three years.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Pfeiffer chose Allen Snook Jr. as an assistant athletic trainer.

Marketing/promotions -- Loyola (Illinois) hired Tim McBride as director of marketing and promotions. Most recently, McBride, who succeeds John Fitzgerald, has been a marketing consultant with the National Hockey League's Phoenix Coyotes.

Marketing/promotions assistant -- Becky Gould was named as assistant director of marketing at Oral Roberts. The school also announced Tracy Gallemore as a marketing intern.

Sports information -- Bobby Heiken was named as sports information director at Western State. Heiken, who replaces Cristal Loehr, currently serves as director of sports operations for ESPN Radio Medford (Oregon).

NATIONAL OFFICE

Jim McLaughlin was reclassified to assistant director of graphics at the national office ... Julie Nash resigned as a human resources coordinator at the national office.

NOTABLES

Erin Deffenbaugh was named as the 2002 American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II national player of the year. Deffenbaugh, a junior at Northern Colorado, established school records this season for kills in a match (39), kills in a season (715) and career kills (1,880) ... USA Track and Field named Bill Roe as winner of the Robert Giegengack award. The honor is presented annually to a person who excels in contributing to the excellence and high standards of the sport. Roe, who has been head men's and women's cross country and distance coach at Western Washington since 1988, was a member of the founding board of directors for USA Track and Field in 1979 and has held several elected positions in the organization in the past 16 years, including most recently serving as president ... Truman's Qi Wang was the American Volleyball Coaches Association's selection as the 2002 AVCA/Tachikara Division II national coach of the year. This season, Wang, who has led the program at Truman since 2001, guided the squad to an appearance in the NCAA Division II national championship match.

DEATHS

Glenn Dobbs, former coach and athletics administrator at Tulsa, died November 12. Dobbs, 82, was athletics director and head football coach at the school.

William B. Langsdorf, the founding president at Cal State Fullerton, died November 18 at the age of 93.

Well-known North Dakota philanthropist and former North Dakota ice hockey student-athlete Ralph Engelstad died recently. He was 72. Engelstad, who provided significant funding for a new campus arena that bears his name, was a goaltender with the school from 1948 to 1950.

Carl Smalls, a football student-athlete at North Carolina, was shot and killed November 7. He was 22. Smalls, a reserve defensive lineman, competed in seven games and tallied four tackles this season.

Marge Weesner, a former coach, faculty member and administrator at George Fox, died November 10. She was 72. Weesner coached volleyball, basketball and softball at the school and was instrumental in organizing the Women's Conference of Independent Colleges, one of the first women's athletics conferences in the Pacific Northwest. She also helped establish and was chair of the health and human performance department at George Fox. Weesner retired as a professor emeritus in 1973.

Bernard Ernst "Barney" Berlinger, former decathlon student-athlete at Pennsylvania, died December 2. He was 94. Berlinger, a member of the 1928 United States Olympic team, captured the decathlon three times at the Penn Relays and set records in the event annually from 1929 to 1931. He also was chosen as the winner of the James E. Sullivan award recognizing the nation's best all-around amateur athlete in 1931.

Bob Groseclose, former track coach at Louisiana-Monroe, died December 8. He was 82. Groseclose led the school to 19 conference championships during a tenure that spanned from 1960 to 1989.

Former basketball student-athlete Bobby Joe Hill died December 8. Hill, 59, was a point guard on the all-black lineup from Texas Western (now Texas-El Paso) that defeated Kentucky to capture the 1966 NCAA national championship.

Joseph Giannelli, coach emeritus at Connecticut, died December 9 at the age of 76. Giannelli coached the golf program for 20 years until 2000, but continued to assist as coach emeritus until his death. Connecticut earned the Big East championship in 1994 and the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship in 1993. He also completed stints as an assistant lacrosse coach, head lacrosse coach and assistant football coach. Before joining Connecticut Giannelli coached football at Boston U. and Hofstra.

Mike Byelene, a former football and baseball student-athlete at Purdue, died October 23. He was 85. Byelene earned all-America recognition in football.

Former Southern Methodist women's basketball coach Welton Brown died as a result of complications from a severe stroke. Brown, 57, was head coach from 1977 to 1991.
