Coppin State names Battle as president

Coppin State has appointed Stanley F. Battle as president, effective March 3, 2003. Battle succeeds Calvin Burnett, who is stepping down after 32 years.

Since 2000, Battle has been vice-chancellor of student and multicultural affairs at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. From 1998 to 2001, he fulfilled the Sullivan-Spaights Distinguished Professorship at Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Schools of Social Welfare and Education. He also spent from 1993 to 1998 as associate vice-president for academic affairs at Eastern Connecticut State.

Battle, an author or co-author of 10 books and more than 60 articles and book chapters, earned a bachelor's degree from Springfield in 1973. He also earned one master's degree in social work in 1975 from Connecticut and another in public health in 1979 from Pittsburgh. Battle earned a doctorate in social welfare policy from Pittsburgh in 1980.

GENERAL

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Oswego State named George Roll as interim athletics director. Roll will continue as head ice hockey coach, a position he has held for seven seasons.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Oswego State appointed Kevin Broderick, Dani Drews and Jean Conway as interim assistant athletics directors. Broderick will retain head men's basketball coaching duties. Drews will continue as head women's volleyball coach, and Conway will retain responsibilities as athletics academic advisor ... Amy Norman was named as assistant athletics director for corporate affairs at Temple ... Saint Louis hired Mark Spencer as assistant athletics director for business and finance. For the past two years, Spencer has been associate athletics director for business operations at East Tennessee State ... Mitch Cox was chosen as assistant athletics director at Cal State Chico. Since 1991, Cox has worked as an assistant athletics director and sports information director at Sonoma State.

COACHES

Baseball -- Richard Morris was named as head coach at Roanoke.

Baseball assistants -- Jeff Swar and Tod Gross were selected as assistant coaches at Franklin & Marshall ... Tag Montague was named as second assistant at George Washington ... Roanoke chose Roger White as an assistant.

Men's basketball -- Jason Rabedeaux resigned as head coach at UTEP. Rabedeaux has led the program since 1999.

Men's basketball assistants -- Stonehill appointed Andrew Gellert as an assistant coach ... Misericordia hired Joe Ryan as an assistant coach ... Ross Peterson was awarded duties as an assistant coach at Carleton. Peterson has been head boys' and girls' coach at the high-school level for eight years ... Rhode Island College added Dan Kelley as an assistant coach. Kelley was head girls' junior varsity coach and assistant girls' varsity coach at the high-school level in 2001-02.

Women's basketball -- Dawn Staley, head coach at Temple, was awarded a five-year contract extension through the 2006-07 season. Last season, Staley guided the school to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 13 years and to its first Atlantic 10 Conference championship.

Women's basketball assistants -- Stonehill named Katelyn Leonard as an assistant coach ... Joe Bryan was appointed as an assistant coach at Misericordia ... Carleton named Dan Roiger as an assistant coach. Roiger has been an assistant men's coach and assistant director of student financial services at the school ... Ernest McNair was chosen as an assistant coach at Rhode Island College. McNair currently is working on a master's degree and working as a residence hall director at Providence ... Mount St. Vincent added Ed Cashen as an assistant coach. Cashen most recently has been assistant varsity coach at Stella Maris (New York) High School ... Evelyn Thompson was hired as an assistant at Buffalo (New York). Thompson formerly was an assistant at Arizona State and Western Kentucky ... Maritime (New York) named Kevin Courtney as an assistant coach. Courtney, formerly a member of the men's basketball squad at Scranton from 1997 to 2001, currently is a mathematics teacher at Monsignor Scanlan (New York) High School.

Men's and women's cross country -- Merchant Marine hired Yolanda Flamino as head cross country and track and field coach. Flamino has been an assistant cross country and track and field coach at North Carolina-Greensboro for one year ... J.D. Evilsizer accepted duties as part-time head men's and women's coach at Columbus State.

Field hockey assistants -- Jill Friedman was selected as an assistant coach at Moravian. Friedman formerly has coached at Kennesaw State, Andrew College and Georgia Southern.

Football -- Marietta's Gene Epley announced plans to retire as head coach at the end of the season.

Football assistant -- Troy State released John Shannon as offensive coordinator.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Jim Ricardo was announced as head men's coach at Misericordia.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Justin McKenna was named as an assistant men's coach at Franklin & Marshall ... Kate Scattergood resigned as assistant women's lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach at Roanoke. The school appointed Malcolm Chase as an assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's rowing assistants -- Mercyhurst hired Anne Dinshah as an assistant men's and women's coach ... Jim O'Connor was named as an assistant men's coach at George Washington.

Women's soccer -- Northwest Nazarene head coach Jim Lang resigned, effective at the end of the season. Lang has guided the program since 1997.

Women's soccer assistant -- Buffalo named Tara Donahue as an assistant coach. During the 2001 season, Donahue served as head coach of the Colorado Storm, an under-12 squad.

Softball -- Stella Porto accepted responsibilities as head coach at Staten Island.

Softball assistants -- George Washington chose Keri Kubala as an assistant coach ... Russell Gaddy and Barry Wood assumed duties as assistants at Roanoke.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant -- John Bruenning was hired as an assistant men's and women's coach at George Washington.

Men's and women's tennis -- Lake Forest named Chris Kane as head men's coach to replace Chad Eisele, who will continue as head football coach. Kane formerly was head coach at Dominican University from 1981 to 1983.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Timothy Beach and Ron Andrews were selected as assistants at Buffalo. For the past two seasons, Beach has been an assistant coach at Columbia, and Andrews most recently completed his career at Kent State as a four-time Mid-American Conference champion in the hurdles.

Wrestling assistants -- Central (Iowa) added Tyler Abens and Ryan Cunningham as assistants to succeed Eric Reed ... Brandon Newill was hired as an assistant coach at Buffalo. Newill is a recent graduate of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, where he was the 2002 Division II national champion at 125 pounds.

STAFF

Administrative -- Temple selected Christopher Donegan as travel and insurance coordinator ... Sharon Sanford was tabbed as special assistant to the athletics director at Buffalo. Sanford has been with the school since 1993 ... Syracuse named Roslynn Foster as coordinator of career development. Foster has been coordinator for student-athlete services at Texas A&M.

Communications assistant -- Jon Fuller was appointed as assistant director of athletics communication at Buffalo. For the past two years, Fuller has been sports information director at San Francisco State.

Equipment assistant -- Edward Majchrowicz was selected as an equipment assistant at Buffalo.

Marketing/promotions -- DePaul chose Karen Loiacono as director of marketing and licensing.

Strength and conditioning assistants -- Syracuse elevated Kenya Palmer to assistant strength and conditioning coach. Most recently, Palmer has been a graduate assistant in the weight room ... Julia Kaufman assumed responsibilities as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Buffalo. Kaufman was a student strength and conditioning coach at Ball State.

CONFERENCES

Conference USA hired Britton Banowsky as commissioner. Banowsky has been associate commissioner at the Big 12 Conference for the past six years and formerly was commissioner of the Southland Conference.

ASSOCIATIONS

The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced the election of Jeanne Hess to its board of directors. Hess has been head women's coach at Kalamazoo for 19 seasons and replaces Jen Bowman, head coach at Bates.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Dawn Turner resigned as coordinator of membership services at the national office ... Ellen Ferris was named as an assistant director for membership services at the national office, effective December 2. Ferris has been assistant commissioner for compliance services at the Big Sky Conference ... Marcie Ratliff resigned as assistant director of special events at the national office.

CORRECTION

An article on the Division II Management Council's October 21-22 meeting contained incorrect information about when an expanded football bracket could be implemented. The story should have said that the expansion could take place in the 2004-05 academic year.

NOTABLES

Mel Brodt, Bill McClure, Clarence Robinson, Deanne Vochatzer and Berny Wagner were elected as the most recent inductees to the United States Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Brodt formerly was head coach at Bowling Green and also formerly served as president of the Division I Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Assocation. McClure completed coaching tenures at Samford, LSU, South Carolina and Abilene Christian in addition to working as an assistant coach for the United States track and field team at the 1972 Olympic Games. Robinson, a member of the 1948 Olympic team, spent from 1949 to 1988 as head men's coach at Brigham Young. Vochatzer, currently head coach at UC Davis, was head United States women's coach at the 1996 Olympics and formerly coached at Cal State Chico, Florida and Cal Poly. Wagner was head coach at Cal State Chico from 1963 to 1965 and guided the program at Oregon State from 1965 to 1975.

DEATHS

Former Missouri Chancellor Charles Kiesler died October 11. Kiesler was 68.
