Hefty named head football coach at Luther

Luther has hired Paul Hefty as head football coach.

For the past five years, Hefty has served as offensive coordinator at Aurora. During his tenure, the program earned three straight Illini-Badger Football Conference championships from 1998 to 2000. The 2000 squad also advanced to the Division III postseason tournament. Before joining Aurora, Hefty worked as Luther's offensive coordinator from 1991 to 1997.

Hefty was a football student-athlete at Luther. He was a three-time all-Iowa Conference selection at quarterback. In 1986, he was named as the conference's most valuable player.

Hefty earned a master of science degree in recreational administration from Wisconsin-La Crosse.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

John D. Haeger was named as president at Northern Arizona. Haeger has been acting president at the school ... Lake Superior State selected Betty J. Youngblood as president, effective June 2002. Youngblood currently is president at Western Oregon.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Roger Williams hired George Kolb as director of athletics. Kolb has most recently been a vice-president and chief operating officer at Trion Communications in Rhode Island, and formerly was an associate athletics director at Brown ... Larry Shank was named as athletics director at Muskingum. Shank has been associate athletics director, head football coach and head men's golf coach at Heidelberg ... Memphis extended the contract of athletics director R.C. Johnson through June 2007.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Marshall elevated Mike Bianchin to associate athletics director and hired Brad Bertani as associate athletics director for compliance. Bianchin has been an assistant athletics director for the past two and half years, and Bertani has spent the past five years as a membership services representative at the NCAA national office ... Janet Lucus was named senior associate athletics director at James Madison. Lucus has been with the school since 1989 and most recently has fulfilled responsibilities as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator.

OF ATHLETICS

Shaw chose Tiffany Nneka Ford as an assistant athletics director for compliance ... Connecticut named Sean Lester as assistant director of athletics/facilities management and planning.

COACHES

Men's basketball assistant -- C. Alan Rowe was appointed as coach emeritus at Richard Stockton. Rowe spent 33 years as head coach at Widener from 1966 to 1998.

Women's basketball -- Saudia Roundtree assumed duties as interim head coach at Morris Brown.

Women's basketball assistant -- Dallas chose Marie Thomas as an assistant women's basketball and assistant softball coach. Thomas has served as an assistant women's basketball and assistant softball coach at Newman University (Kansas) since 1997.

Football -- Northern Michigan's Eric Holm resigned as head coach ... Navy chose Paul Johnson as head coach to replace Charlie Weatherbie and interim head coach Rick Lantz. Johnson, a former offensive coordinator at Navy, has guided Georgia Southern to two consecutive NCAA Division I-AA national championships and five straight Southern Conference titles ... Shenandoah elevated Paul Barnes to head coach. Barnes has been an assistant coach with the program ... South Carolina State named Oliver Pough as head coach, succeeding Willie Jeffries, who retired. Pough, who has been running backs coach at South Carolina, formerly was an assistant coach with the program ... Ralph Friedgen, head coach at Maryland, signed a 10-year contract. The 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year guided the team to a 10-1 record, a conference championship and a berth in the Orange Bowl this season, his first as head coach at the school ... Louisiana-Lafayette chose Rickey Bustle as head coach. Bustle has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Virginia Tech ... Dan Runkle resigned as head coach at Minnesota State-Mankato. Runkle led the school to two North Central Conference championships (1987 and 1993) and three appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs (1987, 1991 and 1993) in 21 seasons ... Mike Sewak was elevated to head coach at Georgia Southern to replace Paul Johnson, who became head coach at Navy. Sewak has worked as offensive coordinator at the school for five years ... California hired Jeff Tedford as head coach to succeed Tom Holmoe. For the past four seasons, Tedford has been offensive coordinator at Oregon ... George O'Leary resigned as head coach at Notre Dame five days after being hired. O'Leary stepped down after he admitted to falsifying biographical data. He had spent the past seven years as head coach at Georgia Tech ... Culver-Stockton's Chris Tabor resigned as head coach to accept an assistant coaching position at Utah State. The school elevated defensive coordinator Shawn Mennenga to head coach ... Bobby Williams, head coach at Michigan State, signed a two-year contract extension through the 2006 season. Williams, who has built a 12-11 record in two years, led this year's squad to a berth in the Silicon Valley Classic Bowl ... St. Augustine's chose Michael E. Costa as head coach. The program, which was reinstated recently after being discontinued in 1967, is slated to play a six-game schedule in 2002. Costa formerly was defensive coordinator at Elizabeth City State and head coach at Cheyney from 1985 to 1990 ... Western Carolina released Bill Bleil as head coach and will reassign him to other duties within the school. This season, Bleil guided the team to a 7-4 mark and was named Southern Conference coach of the year.

Football assistants -- Phil Elmassian resigned as defensive coordinator at West Virginia ... Jackson State reassigned defensive coordinator Robert Kelly as a position coach. The school also announced the retirement of defensive line coach Ben McGee and released linebackers coach David Geralds ... Mark Orlando was selected as offensive coordinator at Texas Southern ... Kansas added Pat Henderson as secondary coach and Nick Quartaro as offensive coordinator ... Ohio will not renew the contract of defensive coordinator Tim Kish ... Chuck Long, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Oklahoma, was promoted to offensive coordinator. The school also appointed Kevin Wilson as offensive line coach and running game coordinator ... Louisiana-Lafayette chose Brent Pry and Mike Gibson as assistant coaches and also retained Gary Bartel, Carey Bailey and Troy Wingerter as assistant coaches. Pry, who was defensive backs and defensive line coach at Western Carolina, will serve as defensive coordinator, and Gibson, who was an offensive line coach for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, will work as offensive line coach. Bartel will continue as assistant head coach and as a defensive coach. Bailey will retain duties as defensive line coach, and Wingerter will move to tight ends coach and head recruiting coordinator after serving as defensive ends coach last season ... Ron Collins was selected to replace Bob Gregory as defensive coordinator at Boise State ... California hired Bob Gregory as defensive coordinator, Bob Foster as linebackers coach, Ken Delgado as defensive line coach, Jim Michalczik as offensive line coach, Eric Kiesau as receivers coach and Dave Ungerer as special teams and tight ends coach. The school retained Ron Gould as running backs coach. Gregory spent from 1998 to 2000 as defensive secondary coach at Oregon, Foster retired as an assistant at Oregon in 2000, and Delgado has spent the past two seasons as defensive coordinator at San Diego State. Michalczik has most recently worked as an assistant coach at Oregon State. Kiesau was Utah State's receivers coach, and Ungerer worked as special teams and tight ends coach at Lehigh.

Men's and women's golf -- Robert Morris added Jerry Stone as head coach. Stone currently works as an instructor and also served as head coach at Our Lady of Scared Heart (Pennsylvania) High School from 1998 to 2001.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Eric Bernheim was named as an assistant men's coach at Roger Williams. Bernheim is a May 2001 graduate of Ithaca, where he was a four-year starter on the lacrosse team ... Delaware hired Alison Fisher as a graduate assistant women's coach. Fisher is a recent graduate of Lafayette, where she was a four-year letter-winner in field hockey and lacrosse ... Joseph Amplo assumed responsibilities as an assistant men's coach at Pennsylvania for the 2002 season ... Eric Wood was awarded responsibilities as an assistant men's coach at Penn State, replacing Greg Jackson. Wood is a 2001 graduate of the school with a degree in kinesiology.

Men's soccer -- North Carolina Wesleyan hired Jason Kilby as head coach to succeed Paul Forster, who became an assistant coach at Wake Forest. Kilby has been an assistant coach at Frostburg State for the past four years.

Women's soccer -- Amy Van Heukelem resigned as head coach at Central (Iowa) to become head women's coach at Butler Community College (Kansas). Van Heukelem spent four years guiding the program at Central ... Steve Burckhalter was appointed as head coach at Augustana (South Dakota). Burckhalter, who replaces Shelly Nelson, has been an assistant men's and women's coach at Morningside for the past year.

Softball -- Nichols chose Mark Moynihan as head softball coach and equipment manager. For the past six years, Moynihan has been an assistant coach at Southern Connecticut State, where he also has worked as head football equipment manager for the last four years ... Middle Tennessee State selected Cindy Connelley as head coach. For the past three years, Connelley has coached at Tennessee State.

Softball assistant -- Ernie Reynolds assumed duties as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State. Reynolds has been a volunteer assistant at Tennessee State and an assistant at the high-school level.

Men's and women's tennis -- Texas Lutheran hired Bill Lehman as head men's and women's coach, replacing Brian Surface, who became head men's coach at Austin Peay. Lehman spent from 1998 to 2000 as football offensive coordinator with the school before retiring from football in 2000 ... Chick Renrew was appointed as head men's coach at Massachusetts-Dartmouth ... Paul Skrok was hired as head men's and women's coach at Robert Morris. Most recently, Skrok, who succeeds Eric Ratchford, has been a regional sales manager at Gamma Sports in Pittsburgh.

Men's and women's track and field -- South Alabama hired Lee Evans as head track and field and cross country coach. Evans, who captured a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in the 400-meter event, was director of national track and field programs for Nigeria, Qatar and Saudi Arabia between 1975 and 1997.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Texas-Pan American chose Simon Bowen as an assistant track and field and cross country coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Buffalo (New York) added Sally Kus as head coach to succeed Nadine Lilavois, who resigned after three seasons. Kus has been head coach at Daemen College for four seasons and formerly guided Sweet Home (New York) High School to a 794-29 mark in 23 years ... Ron Twomey resigned as head women's coach at Saint Mary's (California) ... Framingham State's Brad Alexander resigned as head coach ... Jim Barnes was named as head women's coach at Wyoming ... Cal State Northridge's Lian Lu retired as head women's coach. Lu has guided the program for eight seasons. The school chose assistant coach Susie Terrusa as interim head coach.

STAFF

Development -- Pete Liske was selected as director of major gifts for intercollegiate athletics at Penn State. Liske most recently has served as director of athletics at Toledo and formerly was athletics director at Idaho from 1992 to 1996.

CONFERENCES

The Capital Athletic Conference elected Edward Hegmann, athletics director at Mary Washington, to a two-year term as president. Hegmann succeeds Michael Vienna, athletics director at Salisbury. The conference also elected William Finney, athletics director at Marymount (Virginia), as vice-president.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Robin Green was promoted to assistant chief of staff for Division I and Executive Committee liaison when she was awarded additional responsibilities as permanent liaison to the Executive Committee. Green has most recently served as assistant chief of staff for Division I ... Scott Bearby was elevated to associate general counsel after most recently working as assistant general counsel at the national office ... Jan Gentry was elevated to basketball certification coordinator. Most recently, Gentry has served as an enforcement representative ... LuAnn Humphrey was named as basketball certification representative. Humphrey has been an enforcement representative at the national headquarters.

NOTABLES

Aly Wagner, a women's soccer player at Santa Clara, was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport for 2001-02. The junior midfielder helped Santa Clara capture its first national championship in women's soccer and was chosen as the most outstanding offensive player during the tournament. Wagner also was named as West Coast Conference player of the year.

Autumn Welsh was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in the sport of field hockey. This season Welsh, a senior defensive back at Maryland, helped the team win the Atlantic Coast Conference championship crown as well as make an appearance in the national championship final. Welsh also was named as conference player of the year, conference tournament most valuable player and a member of the NCAA all-tournament team.

Arizona's Tara Chaplin was announced as the Honda Award winner for cross country as the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport for 2001-02. The senior won the Division I Women's Cross Country Championship this season in addition to the NCAA West Regional.

Roger Staubach was named the inaugural winner of the Davey O'Brien Legends award, presented by the Davey O'Brien Foundation. Established to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the foundation, the award honors a quarterback who has made a significant contribution to the game of football, distinguished himself as a leader, and demonstrated exemplary conduct and reputation on and off the field. Staubach captured the 1963 Heisman Trophy, the Walter Camp award and the Maxwell award as a quarterback at Navy. The Pro Football Hall of Famer went on to lead the Dallas Cowboys to four Super Bowl Championships and is the chairman and CEO of The Staubach Company, a full-service real estate strategy and services firm based in Dallas.

DEATHS

Former C.W. Post track and field coach Allen Dawson died December 8. He was 80. Dawson joined the program in 1975 and also served as head coach at Manhasset (New York) High School. Most recently, Dawson had been volunteer coach at the high school.

Bob Burkholder, former basketball player at Ohio State, died December 10. Burkholder, who was 75, earned three letters from 1948 to 1950 and served as an assistant with the program from 1965 to 1976 in charge of scouting and recruiting. He also coached basketball and baseball at Muskingum from 1955 to 1965.

Former Evansville basketball player Wilfred "Gus" Doerner died December 10 at the age of 80. Doerner competed at the school in the early 1940s and went on to play professionally with the Indianapolis Kautskys and the Fort Wayne Pistons.

Thomas Davenport, a former coach at Virginia, died November 26. He was 73. Davenport coached baseball and golf at the school and also formerly worked as executive director of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation.

Ralph T. Mirse, former president at Columbia (South Carolina) and Lakeland, died November 26. Mirse, who also was former director of education development at the Hilton Head Island campus for South Carolina, was 80.

Former Notre Dame track and football student-athlete Aubrey Lewis died of complications from a heart ailment December 10. He was 66. Lewis won an NCAA championship in the 400-meter hurdles in 1956.
