Willingham goes from Cardinal to Irish

Notre Dame has selected Tyrone Willingham as head football coach. Willingham replaces George O'Leary, who resigned.

For the past seven seasons, Willingham has guided the program at Stanford to a 44-36-1 mark and led squads to bowl games in 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2001. The two-time Pacific-10 Conference coach of the year formerly was running backs coach at the school from 1989-91 before spending three seasons as running backs coach for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings. He also has been an assistant at Rice, North Carolina State, Michigan State and Central Michigan.

Willingham attended Michigan State and competed as a two-sport student-athlete in football and baseball. The 1977 graduate earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education.

Ronald L. Applbaum was chosen as president at Southern Colorado, effective in July. Applbaum has been president at Kean ... James E. Cofer was named as president at Louisiana-Monroe. Most recently, Cofer has been vice-president for finance and administration at the University of Missouri System ... Southeastern Louisiana appointed Randy Moffett as president. Moffett has served as interim president at the school ... West Liberty State chose Richard H. Owens as president. Owens has been president at Heidelberg ... Harry L. Peterson announced plans to retire as president at Western State, effective June 30 ... David F. Rankin was selected as president at Southern Arkansas. Rankin has been dean of the school of business administration at the school ... Central Arkansas' Winfred L. Thompson retired as president. The school selected John W. Smith, vice-president for finance and administrative services, as interim president ... Florida A&M appointed Henry Lewis III as interim president to succeed Frederick S. Humphries, who was named as chief executive officer for the National Association of Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. Lewis is a professor of and dean of the school's college of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences ... Paul Marion was selected as president at Tiffin, effective July 1, 2002. Marion currently is president at Franklin ... Kendall Blanchard resigned as president at Fort Lewis, effective June 30. Blanchard, who has been president since February 1999, will return to the classroom as a professor of anthropology.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Scott L. Johnson was hired as athletics director at Fresno State after fulfilling the position on an interim basis since July 3. Johnson, who replaces Al Bohl, has been with the school since 1981 and has served as associate athletics director since 1994 ... Neill R. McGeachy Jr. was named as director of intercollegiate athletics at Lenoir-Rhyne. McGeachy, who also will work as a special consultant to the school's official booster club, has been director of marketing for the United States Tennis Association Southern Section since 1997 ... Memphis' R.C. Johnson was awarded a five-year contract extension through June 30, 2007. Johnson has guided the program since December 1995 ... Southern Colorado selected Chris Gage as athletics director, effective July 1, to replace interim athletics director William Quayle. Since 1996, Gage has worked as senior associate athletics director for external affairs and formerly was athletics director at Eastern New Mexico ... Brian Quinn was hired as director of athletics at Cal State Fullerton to succeed John Easterbrook. Quinn has been executive director of athletics development and promotion at Loyola Marymount ... Jon Mark Hall was hired as athletics director at Southern Indiana. Hall has been assistant athletics director at the school for seven years and will relinquish responsibilities as head men's tennis coach at the end of the 2001-02 season ... Houston chose Dave Maggard as athletics director, effective February 1. Maggard, who replaces Chet Gladchuck, most recently has been a consultant to the Sacramento, California, Sports Commission and was vice-president of sports administration for Turner Sports from 1996 to 2000 ... Debby Colberg resigned as director of athletics at Sacramento State. Colberg, who will continue as head volleyball coach, has served as athletics director since February 1999 ... Washington and Jefferson appointed Richard Creechan as athletics director ... Hiram's Wendell Jack resigned as athletics director to become athletics director at Whittier.

Paul A. Bubb was selected as senior associate director of athletics for advancement and finance at Maine. Since 1999, Bubb has been assistant director for the Bronco Athletic Association at Boise State.

COACHES

Men's basketball -- Albany (New York) re-assigned head coach Scott Beeten and selected Will Brown as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Football -- Bobby Lamb was elevated to head coach at Furman to succeed Bobby Johnson. For the past three years, Lamb has been quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator ... Hillsdale hired Keith Otterbein as head coach to succeed Dave Dye. Otterbein has been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Ball State ... Marty Schaetzle was awarded head coaching duties at Mercyhurst. Schaetzle, who replaces Joe Kimball, has been an assistant at Bucknell for the past five seasons, most recently serving as offensive coordinator ... Lee Brown was announced as head coach at Cheyney. Brown was secondary coach at Mount Senario College ... San Diego State added Tom Craft as head coach. Craft spent from 1994 to 1996 as offensive coordinator at the school and has been head coach at Palomar College (California) ... Western Carolina hired Kent Briggs as head coach to replace Bill Bleil. Briggs a defensive coordinator at Connecticut for the past year, was an assistant coach at Western Carolina for eight years ... Steve Spurrier resigned as head coach at Florida. Spurrier guided the program to a 122-27-1 record, six Southeastern Conference titles and a national championship in 1996. Florida appointed Ron Zook as Spurrier's successor. Zook has been defensive coordinator with the NFL's New Orleans Saints for two years and formerly was defensive coordinator at Florida ... Georgia Tech hired Chan Gailey as head coach. Gailey has been offensive coordinator with the NFL's Miami Dolphins for the past two years ... Chris Meidt, an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Bethel (Minnesota) for the last seven years, was named head coach at St. Olaf ... St. Francis (Pennsylvania) added Dave Opfar as head coach. Opfar, who has been defensive coordinator at Washington and Jefferson for the past three seasons, replaces Dave Jaumotte ... North Alabama hired Mark Hudspeth as head coach to succeed Bill Hyde. Hudspeth spent the 2001 season as offensive coordinator at Navy ... Bobby Johnson assumed duties as head coach at Vanderbilt. Johnson, who replaces Woody Widenhofer, has spent the past eight seasons as head coach at Furman ... Arkansas State chose Steve Roberts as head coach. Football assistants -- Auburn's Noel Mazzone resigned as offensive coordinator, and John Lovett resigned as defensive coordinator ... Kansas named Dave Doeren as linebackers coach, Dave Borbely as offensive line coach and Bill Young as defensive coordinator. Doeren has been secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Montana for the past two seasons and Borbely has spent the last four seasons as offensive line coach at Notre Dame. Young served as defensive line coach for the NFL's Detroit Lions during the 2001 season ... Thom Kaumeyer was hired as defensive coordinator at San Diego State. Most recently, Kaumeyer has worked as defensive quality control coach with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons ... Joker Phillips was added as running backs coach at South Carolina ... La Salle chose Phil Longo as associate head coach and offensive coordinator ... California appointed George Cortez as offensive coordinator and Dave Ungerer as special teams coach ... Ed Rifilato resigned as defensive coordinator at Idaho ... Kevin Rogers was awarded duties as quarterbacks coach at Virginia Tech ... D'Allesandris has been offensive line coach at Duke since 1997, Robinson fulfilled responsibilities as running backs coach at Oklahoma State last season and Wilson has worked at Mississippi State for the past five seasons, most recently as coordinator of football operations. The school also retained Bill O'Brien as offensive coordinator and Ted Roof and Glenn Spencer as defensive coaches ... Dave Baldwin was named as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Baylor, replacing Greg Meyer, who resigned. Baldwin spent last season as offensive coordinator at Cincinnati ... West Virginia's Jeff Casteel and Todd Graham were elevated to co-defensive coordinators. Casteel will retain duties as defensive line coach and Graham will continue as linebackers coach ... Elon hired Will Holthouser as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach to succeed Morris Starr. Holthouser, who formerly worked in the same capacity at the school during the 1998 and 1999 seasons, has been defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Chattanooga for the past two years ... Ken Niumatalolo was selected as assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Navy. For the past three seasons, Niumatalolo has been tight ends coach and has assisted with the kickoff return unit at UNLV ... North Alabama appointed Gwaine Mathews as defensive coordinator, Kenny Edenfield as offensive coordinator and Kelly Causey as defensive line coach. For the past three years, Mathews has been defensive coordinator at Delta State and Edenfield served as tight ends and special teams coach at Tulsa during the 2001 season. Causey has worked as head coach at St. Martin (Mississippi) High School for the past three years ... Bobby Petrino was named as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Auburn. Petrino, an assistant with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars for the past three seasons, replaces Noel Mazzone ... Cincinnati will not renew the contracts of receivers coach Tyrone Dixon, linebackers coach Andy Hendel and defensive line coach O'Neill Gilbert ... Florida appointed Larry Fedora as running backs coach, Joe Wickline as offensive line coach, Red Anderson as defensive line coach, Mike Woodford as defensive backs coach and Ed Zaunbrecher as offensive coordinator. Dwayne Dixon will continue as receivers coach and Jerry Odom will retain responsibilities as linebackers coach. Fedora and Wickline have been assistants at Middle Tennessee State, and Woodford has served as an assistant with the NFL's New Orleans Saints. Zaunbrecher most recently worked as offensive coordinator at Marshall, while Anderson has been an administrator with Gator Boosters, Inc. for seven seasons ... Bill Keopple was hired as defensive line coach at Tulsa. Keopple has been in private business for the past two years and formerly was defensive line coach at Arkansas in 1999-00 ... Notre Dame added Bill Diedrick as offensive coordinator, Kent Baer as defensive coordinator, Buzz Preston as running backs coach, Mike Denbrock as tight ends and offensive tackles coach, John McDonell as centers and guards coach for the offensive line and Phil Zacharias as defensive ends coach. Greg Mattison will continue as defensive line coach. Diedrick, Baer, Preston, Denbrock, McDonell and Zacharias have been assistants at Stanford ... David Oliver was appointed as offensive coordinator at Southern. For the past five years, Oliver has served as special teams and tight ends coach at Tulane ... Louisiana-Monroe elevated Tommy Condell to offensive coordinator. Condell, who replaces Stan Humphries, was special teams coordinator and tight ends coach this past season. The school also announced that offensive line coach Chris Truax resigned after three seasons ... Mississippi added Reggie Herring as defensive coordinator, replacing Don Lindsey. For the past eight years, Herring has coached at Clemson, most recently working as defensive coordinator ... BYU chose Steve Kaufusi as defensive line coach. Kaufusi, who has been an assistant at Utah since 1994, succeeds the retiring Tom Ramage ... Jamie Snider was awarded duties as offensive coordinator, Curtis Walker was named defensive coordinator and Kevin Brown was added as quarterbacks coach at Coastal Carolina ... Northwestern State appointed John Nagle and Chris Truax as assistant coaches ... Portland State chose Eric Reid as offensive line coach ... Rich McGeorge was hired as offensive line coach at Duke to replace Joe D'Alessandris. McGeorge formerly coached at the school from 1981-82 and 1987-89. ... Tulane added Eric Schumann as defensive coordinator.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Wisconsin head men's coach Jeff Sauer announced plans to resign at the end of the season. Sauer has led the program to two national championships since assuming head coaching responsibilities in 1982.

Men's and women's golf -- Mark Vass assumed responsibilities as head men's coach at Heidelberg. Vass, who replaced Larry Shank, serves as football wide receivers coach and equipment coordinator at the school.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Eugene McCabe was selected as head men's lacrosse and assistant football coach at Hamilton. McCabe, who replaced Jayme Block, has been an assistant lacrosse coach at Washington and Lee for three years and worked as football quarterbacks coach, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator last season.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Franklin and Marshall chose Christian Zwickert as assistant men's coach. Since last spring, Zwickert has been head coach for the German national team for the 2001 European Championships ... Kevin Warne assumed responsibilities as assistant men's coach at Delaware. Warne was an assistant men's coach and interim head coach at Merchant Marine during the 2000-01 season.

Men's soccer assistant -- Duke's John Barrett resigned as an assistant coach, effective June 30.

Women's soccer -- Todd Yelton was named as head coach at Samford.

Women's soccer assistant -- Jamie Woods was named as an assistant at Texas Tech. Woods replaces Amy Dyksterhuis.

Softball -- Bob Bunnell assumed additional responsibilities as head coach at Franklin and Marshall to succeed Kathryn Kroupa. Bunnell also fulfills responsibilities as athletics director at the school and formerly served as a head baseball coach at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis, Philadelphia Sciences and Kenyon ... Mitch Hanson resigned as head coach at North Dakota State. The school selected Darren Mueller, an assistant coach, as Hanson's interim successor. Hanson has guided the program since 1995 and led the squad to an NCAA Division II national championship in 2000.

Softball assistant -- Franklin and Marshall added Jennifer Rothrock as an assistant.

Men's and women's tennis -- Sasha Schmid was hired as head women's coach at Stetson. From 1998 through 2000, Schmid was an assistant women's coach at Iowa ... Pablo Montana was named as head women's coach at California (Pennsylvania). Montana has been an assistant men's coach at Vanderbilt since 1999 ... Pacific (Oregon) hired Alan Watts as head men's and women's coach to succeed Jim Pyle. Watts most recently has coached at Robert Morris and formerly was an assistant women's coach at Alabama and head coach at Greensboro.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Texas-Pan American added Elizabeth Middleton as an assistant.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- DePaul chose David Kaiser as an assistant.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Wofford chose Corey Helle as head women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Washington added Pat Stangle as an assistant women's coach and recruiting coordinator to succeed Rick McLaughlin. Stangle has been head coach at Seward County (Kansas) Community College for the past five years.

STAFF

Athletic trainer -- Quinnipiac named Gordon Hurlbert as director of athletic training. Most recently, Hurlbert has been chief executive officer and director of sports medicine and rehabilitation services at two Florida therapy centers.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Nina Walker was chosen as an assistant athletic trainer at Quinnipiac. Walker was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at North Carolina.

Compliance -- Sandy Atkins assumed responsibilities as director of compliance at Troy State ... Mike Moleta was selected as director of compliance at Northern Arizona. Moleta has worked as director of compliance at Southern Mississippi for the last two years.

Sports information assistants -- Penn State elevated Randy Press to assistant sports information director. Press has worked as a sports information assistant since July 2000 ... Jennifer Armson was appointed as a sports information assistant at Penn State. Since July 2001, Armson has worked as a sports information intern at the school.

CONFERENCES

The West Coast Conference chose Gloria Nevarez as assistant commissioner. Nevarez has been assistant athletics director for compliance and legal affairs at California.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Marc Comstock, Hussain Naqi and Joyce Thompson were named as enforcement representatives at the national office. Comstock has been head men's basketball coach at Emporia State University, Naqi was a player personnel and salary cap analyst with the National Football League and Thompson has been a legal liaison for the office of legal affairs at the Indiana State Department of Health.

Mark Herrmann was chosen as a Stay in Bounds development coordinator. Herrmann has been an investment executive with Paine Webber.

AGREEMENTS

The Missouri Valley Conference signed a corporate sponsorship agreement with Fox Sports Net Midwest. The two-year agreement begins with the 2001-02 academic year and includes a two-year extension of the conference's television contract with Fox Sports Net. In 2002, Fox Sports Net Midwest also will begin as a presenting sponsor of the conference's annual men's basketball tournament.

DEATHS

Former men's basketball coach Al LoBalbo passed away January 5 at the age of 82. LoBalbo served as an assistant coach at Army from 1967 to 1969 and was head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson from 1969 to 1980. He also worked as an assistant at St. John's (New York).

Caleb Bohman, a swimming student-athlete at College of New Jersey, died January 6 after collapsing at practice. Bohman, a freshman computer graphic design major, competed in the backstroke events.

Former Southern California football player Ernie Jones died of cancer recently. He was 61. Jones competed as a punter, fullback and cornerback in the early 1960s.
