Campbell names Hess as head men's coach

Campbell has elevated Doug Hess to head men's soccer coach. Hess succeeds Derrick Leeson, who resigned.

For the past two seasons, Hess has served as an assistant with the program at Campbell. Before assuming duties there, he was an assistant coach at Bucknell and East Stroudsburg.

A three-time all-Mid-Atlantic Conference selection at Elizabethtown, Hess earned recognition as a first-team NCAA Division III all-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 1995. He also helped the team capture two conference championships and make four consecutive NCAA Division III tournament appearances. Hess went on to play professionally in the United Soccer Leagues Division III Pro League.

Hess earned a bachelor of science in business administration at Elizabethtown in 1996 and a master of education in health and physical education at East Stroudsburg in 2000.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Richard H. Hersh was named as president at Trinity (Connecticut) to replace Evan Dobelle, who was chosen as president at Hawaii, and Ronald R. Thomas, acting president. Hersh formerly was president at Hobart/William Smith ... Edward M. Hundert was appointed as president at Case Western Reserve. Hundert has been dean of the school of medicine and dentistry at Rochester ... George R. Johnson Jr. resigned as president at LeMoyne-Owen, effective in June ... Axel D. Steuer resigned as president at Gustavus Adolphus, effective in June ... Western Illinois chose David Taylor as interim president. Taylor has been dean of the college of education and human services at the school ... Donald C. Dahlin was named as acting president at South Dakota. Dahlin is vice-president for academic affairs at the school ... Bates appointed Elaine Tuttle Hansen as president, effective July 1. Hansen will succeed Donald W. Harward, who announced plans to retire as president, effective June 30. Hansen has been provost, chief academic officer and a professor of English literature at Haverford ... A. Max Lennon resigned as president at Mars Hill.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Robert Mulcahy was awarded a contract extension as athletics director at Rutgers through 2005. Mulcahy has served in the position since April 1998 ... Michigan State announced Ron Mason will step down as head men's ice hockey coach and become athletics director at the school, effective at the end of the season. Mason, who is in his 23rd season at Michigan State, is college hockey's winningest coach with an overall record of 916-376-81. He will replace Clarence Underwood, who is retiring ... Longwood hired Rick Mazzuto as director of athletics. Mazzuto spent from 1989 to 2000 as athletics director at Saint Mary's (California) and formerly fulfilled the same capacity at Iona from 1980 to 1989 ... Brian Chafin was appointed as director of athletics and recreation at Centre to succeed Joe McDaniel, who is retiring. Chafin will relinquish responsibilities as head men's soccer coach after having served in that capacity since 1989 ... Salem State's John Galaris announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective June 2002. Galaris, who has been with the school for 33 years, has worked as athletics director for the past 21 years.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Pamela J. Wojnar was hired as assistant athletics director at Wheaton (Massachusetts), effective March 1. Since 1994, Wojnar has served as athletics director at Rosemont ... Christi Wade was promoted to assistant athletics director at Saint Leo. Wade is beginning her seventh year as head softball coach and has served as senior woman administrator since 1997.

COACHES

Baseball -- Dave Van Horn, head coach at Nebraska, signed a five-year contract ... Ron Nischwitz, head coach at Wright State, signed a three-year contract.

Baseball assistant -- Texas-Pan American named Shawn Moes as an assistant coach, replacing Mike Brown, who resigned. Moes spent last summer as first base coach for the Edinburg Roadrunners of the Texas-Louisiana Professional Baseball League.

Men's basketball -- Southern Illinois-Edwardsville's Jack Margenthaler announced plans to step down as head coach. Margenthaler, who has guided the program since June 1992, will be reassigned at the end of the season and retire June 30 ... Union named Kelly Combs as head men's basketball and golf coach, effective with the 2002-03 academic year.

Women's basketball -- Barbie Breedlove resigned as head coach at Appalachian State, effective March 31 ... Shirley Huyett, head coach at Idaho State, was placed on leave for the remainder of the season. The school selected assistant coach Lynn Kennedy as interim head coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- John Hopkins announced plans to retire as head men's and women's coach at Scranton.

Field hockey assistant -- Jeanne Shin assumed duties as an assistant coach at Northwestern.

Football -- Delta State chose Rick Rhoades as head coach ... Mark Richt, head coach at Georgia, signed a one-year contract extension through the 2006 season. Richt led the program to an 8-4 mark and an appearance in the Music City Bowl in his first year as head coach ... Linwood Ferguson resigned as head coach at Midwestern State. The school named defensive coordinator Cary Fowler as acting head coach ... Bob Packard retired as head coach at Baldwin-Wallace ... Ron Cooper, head coach at Alabama A&M for the past four seasons, was chosen as an assistant coach at Wisconsin ... West Virginia awarded head coach Rich Rodriguez a one-year contract extension. Rodriguez has guided the program for one season ... Cincinnati awarded Rick Minter with a contract extension through 2005. Minter, who has been head coach for the past eight seasons, guided the school to an appearance in the Motor City Bowl last year ... Ray Reasland was elevated to head coach at Cornell (Iowa) to replace Steve Miller, who resigned. Reasland has been the top assistant with the program for nine seasons in addition to working as head baseball coach, and strength and conditioning coordinator. Frank Fishler was announced as Reasland's interim successor as head baseball coach for the 2002 season ... Winston-Salem extended the contract of head coach Kermit Blount through the 2006 season.

Football assistants -- Lenoir-Rhyne appointed Joe Johnson as defensive coordinator and secondary coach and Daniel Gonzalez as quarterbacks and wide receivers coach ... J.D. Shaw was named as offensive coordinator, and Jerry McCombs was selected as offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Averett ... Samford hired Rick Herzog as linebackers coach, Eric Skipwith as wide receivers coach and Rory Segrest as defensive line coach ... Chris Brown was announced as defensive coordinator at Washburn ... Bob Sabol resigned as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Delaware. Sabol has been with the program since 1981 and has been defensive coordinator for the past 11 seasons ... Northwestern chose Mike Dunbar as offensive coordinator and named Jerry Brown as assistant head coach. Dunbar spent last season as special teams, running backs and tight ends coach at the school. Brown was defensive coordinator. Dunbar and Brown replace Kevin Wilson, who joined the program at Oklahoma. The school hired Greg Colby as defensive coordinator to succeed Brown. Colby has worked as defensive coordinator at Kent State for the past four years. Additionally, the school announced new duties for assistants Pat Fitzgerald, Jay Peterson and Jack Glowik. Fitzgerald will serve as linebackers coach, Peterson will work as defensive line coach and Glowik will be tight ends and halfbacks coach ... Joe Lombardi was hired as an assistant at Mercyhurst. Lombardi, who has been an assistant at Dayton, VMI and Bucknell, most recently was running backs and tight ends coach for the XFL's New York/New Jersey Hitmen ... Ball State added Greg Carlson as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator to succeed Keith Otterbein. Carlson has been director of football operations at Illinois since the spring of 2001 ... Oregon hired Andy Ludwig as offensive coordinator to succeed Jeff Tedford. For the past four seasons, Ludwig has worked as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fresno State ... John Lovett was chosen as defensive coordinator at Clemson to succeed Reggie Herring. Lovett most recently was defensive coordinator at Auburn ... St. Francis (Pennsylvania) named Darnel Richardson, Troy Davis and Paul Failla as assistant coaches ... Kansas State hired Bobby Elliott as defensive coordinator and Bret Bielema as linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator. Elliott, who has been associate head coach at Iowa State for two seasons, succeeds Phil Bennett. Bielema formerly was linebackers coach at Iowa. The school also elevated Del Miller to a full-time coach. Miller served in an administrative role last year ... Rick Smith resigned as defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. Before assuming responsibilities at Georgia Tech, Smith was assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach at Kentucky ... Georgia Southern chose Greg Hill as wide receivers coach and Mark Williams as offensive line coach ... Mark McHale was elevated to offensive coordinator and Larry Kueck was hired as quarterbacks coach at Marshall. McHale, who succeeds Ed Zaunbrecher, has served as offensive line coach, and Kueck has spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at Southern Methodist ... Mississippi Valley State named Shawn Gregory as offensive coordinator, Samuel Washington as defensive coordinator, Clyde Jefferson as defensive line coach, Richard Smithers as offensive line coach and Arthur Moore as defensive backs coach ... Mercyhurst elevated Mark McNellie to assistant head coach and chose Eric Hancock as defensive coordinator ... Dave Lanning was added as an assistant at St. John Fisher ... Florida named Leon Tolbert as offensive assistant coach ... Nevada appointed Barry Sacks as tight ends and special teams coach, Denny Schuler as safeties, rovers and linebackers coach and Dave Stromswold as offensive line coach ... Reggie Herring resigned as defensive coordinator at Mississippi to become linebackers coach for the NFL's Houston Texans. Herring had been at Mississippi since January and formerly was an assistant at Clemson for eight years, including the last five as defensive coordinator.

Men's and women's golf -- New Haven hired Thomas McQueeney Jr. as head men's coach. McQueeney worked 35 years as head boys' golf coach at Ansonia (Connecticut) High School in addition to leading the varsity boys' basketball squad.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Bill Lawson announced plans to retire as head men's coach at Lafayette, effective at the end of the 2002 season.

Men's soccer -- Fairleigh Dickinson signed head coach Seth Roland to a contract extension ... UCLA's Todd Saldana, who has guided the men's program for three seasons, stepped down. Saldana formerly was an assistant at the school from 1989-95 and spent one season as head women's coach in 1998 before taking over head men's coaching duties ... Bill Hayward resigned as head coach and assistant professor of health, movement science and recreation, effective June 30. Hayward, who has led the program for eight seasons, will serve as head men's golf coach in the spring ... Jeff Rohrman was hired as head coach at Wisconsin. For the past seven years, Rohrman has been the top assistant at Maryland ... Campbell promoted Doug Hess to head coach, succeeding Derrick Leeson, who resigned. Hess has been an assistant with the program for two years.

Women's soccer -- Wendy Logan resigned as head coach at Iowa ... West Chester appointed Deb Flaherty as head coach.

Softball -- St. Francis (Pennsylvania) announced the resignation of head coach Brock Radaker.

Softball assistants -- Heidelberg added Julie Bright as a part-time assistant coach ... Buffalo (New York) hired Rosie Pagana as an assistant. Pagana, who replaces Shannon Salsburg, spent the 2001 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Mansfield ... Kris Cox resigned as an assistant coach at Charlotte.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- John Narcy announced plans to retire as diving coach at Michigan State, effective at the end of the 2002 season.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Mississippi hired Joe Getzin as head women's coach. Getzin has been the top assistant at South Carolina for two seasons ... Shelton Collier resigned as head women's coach at Georgia Tech. Collier has guided the team since 1991 and has captured three Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championships and one conference title during his tenure ... Kevin Renshler resigned as head women's coach at Auburn ... Scott Swanson was added as head women's coach at UTEP to replace Revis Ward-Daggett, who resigned. Swanson has been coaching at Arizona State, most recently serving as associate head coach ... Long Island named Dinu Dan as head women's coach ... Prentice Lewis was hired as head women's coach at Texas Christian ... Winona State's Amy Fisher resigned as head coach ... Delaware chose Bonnie Kenny as head women's coach to replace interim coach Sue Stauffer and head coach Shannon Elliott, who resigned. Since 1993, Kenny has been head women's coach at Massachusetts.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Buffalo (New York) chose Randy Syracuse as an assistant coach. Syracuse, who succeeds Todd Kamenash, was an assistant women's coach at Niagara during the 2001 season and also served as a men's club coach at Buffalo (New York) ... Keith Rubio and Rhonda Rust were awarded responsibilities as assistant women's coaches at Oregon.

Wrestling -- Terry Brands was selected as head coach at Chattanooga. Brands has been an assistant coach at Montana State University-Northern.

STAFF

Academic services -- Laura Moan accepted additional responsibilities as coordinator of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program and advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Oneonta State. Moan also serves as head women's lacrosse and assistant field hockey coach.

Communications -- Ball State hired Brad Caudill as assistant director of athletics communications. Last fall, Caudill worked as a sports information graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan.

Compliance -- Jay Jones was hired as director of compliance at Saint Louis. Jones has been a compliance assistant at South Florida for the past two years.

Development -- Saint Louis named Jim Braun as director of athletics development. Most recently, Braun has been at UNLV.

Marketing/promotions -- North Carolina-Pembroke named Ray Hedrick as director of marketing and assistant baseball coach. Hedrick formerly worked in the marketing department for the Bowie Baysox AA baseball team and also previously was an assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at Shenandoah.

Sports information assistant -- Heidelberg named Andy Cole as part-time assistant sports information director for the remainder of the year. Cole was a sports information graduate assistant at North Dakota State.

Strength and conditioning -- Mike Linn was selected as strength and conditioning coordinator at Saint Louis. For the past four years, Linn has served as head strength and conditioning coach at UCLA ... Casey Bond was appointed as interim strength and conditioning coach at Northern Arizona.

CORRECTIONS

Canisius College Athletics Director Timothy Dillon was misidentified as the school's head rifle coach in a feature story that appeared in the February 4 issue of The NCAA News.

The first name of the North Dakota State University women's basketball coach was incorrect in the Division II notes section of the February 4 issue of The NCAA News. Amy Ruley recently won her 550th game as coach of the Bison.

DEATHS

Former UCLA student-athlete and coach George Dickerson died January 22. Dickerson competed on the football team for four years, serving as team captain for the 1936 team, and also was a three-year rugby letter-winner. During his tenure as an assistant football coach at the school from 1946 to 1957, the team captured the 1954 national championship and made three Rose Bowl appearances.

Former Southern Mississippi coach and athletics administrator Reed Green died recently. He was 90. Green guided the football program for nine seasons beginning in 1937 and led the men's basketball squad for six seasons starting in 1936. He became the school's first full-time athletics director in 1949 and continued in that position until 1973.

Jawan Jackson, a freshman trying out for the Northern Illinois football team, collasped and died during conditioning drills February 1. Jackson was 19.

Former Cincinnati men's basketball coach Ed Jucker died February 2. Jucker, who was 85, led Cincinnati to two NCAA national championships in 1961 and 1962.

Anthony Miller, a football player at Army, died February 1 after suffering a heart attack. He was 20. Miller caught 27 passes for 358 yards as a wide receiver and also made 24 tackles and forced two fumbles as a member of the special teams unit.

Lou DeMartino, former head baseball coach at John Jay, passed away February 1. DeMartino coached at the school for 27 years and amassed 424 victories. He also worked for Major League Baseball International.

John A. Spezzaferro, former head football coach at Heidelberg, died February 5. He was 80. Spezzaferro led the program from 1978 to 1980 and also was an assistant during the 1972 season.
