The NCAA News

Robert Khayat, chancellor
University of Mississippi
Atlanta Journal and Constitution

"You have misbehavior; the coach gets fired and takes his money with him. The institution gets put on probation, and the next coach and the institution have the penalties to deal with. We have got to take a look at that. ...

"Television has made stars out of (coaches). If you're going to be a star and make a lot of money, then you have a lot of responsibility. When you start paying the kind of salaries we pay coaches, they take on CEO responsibilities that go far beyond the court or the playing field.

"I think coaches have incredible sway over their players; I think coaches have a big impact on their fans. Coaches have the power, more than anyone, to change the system, to make people change their behavior."

Friday football

Bill Cherry, athletics director
McCallie School (Chattanooga, Tennessee)
Athletic Management

"I do feel strongly that it was totally unnecessary for the colleges to do (permit Friday night football telecasts). I know some schools have to scramble to make ends meet financially, and I'm sure this was a way to do that. But it's too bad a lot of college programs feel their success is measured by how much revenue they have."

Division I issues

Robert Hemenway, chancellor
University of Kansas
Lawrence (Kansas) Journal-World

Discussing recent efforts from the Board of Directors, a group Hemenway currently chairs, regarding Division I athletics:

"We have an obligation to show intercollegiate athletics is about more than winning. It is about people competing and taking advantage of educational opportunities. We all want to win and have successful programs, but we also want to be part of something more noble."

Commissioner role

Jeremy Foley, director of athletics
University of Florida
Atlanta Journal and Constitution

"I think the commissioner can have vision and ideas, but how can he come on my campus and change it? I see the commissioner as someone who leads, but the accountability has to be with the institutions. What happens at our institution in athletics is my responsibility, not the commissioner's."

Terry Bowden, sports commentator
Atlanta Journal and Constitution

"In a coach's mind, he knows that if he doesn't win, he's going to get fired no matter what else he does. He might feel differently if his president would walk in and say, 'If you win eight games a year, go to bowls and don't have any NCAA problems, you'll be fine.' But no president, especially a president in the South, will ever say that."

Preseason football games

Bill Snyder, head football coach
Kansas State University
Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Discussing the last year of preseason exempted games in football:

"For college football, I think those games were a good thing because it marks the beginning of the season. It was sort of an existence of grandeur. But the advantage of playing 12 games, we're not kidding anybody, it's all money. That's what college athletics has gotten to, it's a business, a money business."
