Academic proposals will establish finer line in recruiting

James A. Castaneda, faculty athletics representative
Rice University
Chronicle of Higher Education

Discussing proposed academic enhancements in Division I:

"One of the most important goals, to me, is trying to make a change in the way coaches go about recruiting. We feel we should be recruiting people who are as similar as possible to the profile of the overall student body and to people who clearly indicate that they have both the ability and the interest to go ahead and graduate."

John Chaney, head men's basketball coach
Temple University
Chronicle of Higher Education

"Every college has a different mission. You can't walk into a room and vote that coaches are responsible for graduation rates when colleges are accepting kids. Don't be hypocritical talking about academics when you're whispering to the admissions department to bring in great athletes."

Physical fitness

Mike Clark, strength and conditioning coach
Texas A&M University, College Station
Austin American Statesman

"I don't think college athletes need to get so huge. Your body can handle it better when you're older, but if you get too big too soon, you put your body in danger. But nobody's trying to get smaller, and I don't see anything changing."
