Wisconsin-La Crosse used a mixture of winning efforts and lower place finishes to successfully defend its team title at the Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships March 8-9 at Ohio Northern.

The Eagles won their division-leading ninth title overall with 54 points. Lincoln (Pennsylvania) was second for the seventh time with 48 points, and Montclair State had its best finish in the championships' history by placing third with 29 points.

Andy Basler and Andrew Rock were event winners for Wisconsin-La Crosse. Basler captured the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 9 1/2 inches. Rock set a meet record of 47.47 seconds in the 400-meter dash after finishing second in the event at both the 2001 indoor and outdoor championships.

"I stayed relaxed and focused, and just ran the race," Rock said. "I worked a lot in the off-season, so this feels awesome."

Dan Tutskey added six points to the Eagles' total by placing third in the 55-meter dash, and seven different athletes contributed 20 more points with two fifth-place, two sixth-place and three seventh-place finishes.

The Eagles' win was capped by the 1,600-meter relay unit of Derek Toshner, Charlie Wittleder, Jesse Reed and Rock placing second.

Lincoln won the 1,600-meter relay and also received an individual title from Chaz Clemons in the 55-meter dash for the second consecutive year. Milton Williams in the 400-meter dash and Justin Jarmon in the triple jump both finished second for the Lions.

Enrique Llamos led Montclair State by winning the 55-meter high hurdles.

Raheim Greenridge of Wheaton (Massachusetts) was the meet's only double winner, repeating his 2001 victory in the triple jump and adding a

first place in the high jump.

"It all starts in the weight room," Greenridge said. "My performance started to excel just when I need to peak."

In addition to Rock, Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Matt Groose (800-meter run), Allegheny's Jeremy Scott (pole vault), and Haverford's Gregory Bielecki, Christopher Ward, Chris Johnstone and J. B. Haglund (distance medley relay), also set meet records.
