The NCAA News

Playing on opposite coasts did not deter the Williams men's tennis team from doing just as its women's team did. The Ephs played the same opponent -- Emory -- in the final, and even had the same victorious outcome. Williams claimed its second consecutive Division III Men's Tennis Championship and third overall with a 4-3 victory over the Eagles.

The championships were conducted May 17-22 at UC Santa Cruz.

After a fog and rain delay, the championship finally got underway with Emory jumping out to claim the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches and the coveted doubles point. Even more daunting for Williams was that in singles play, the Ephs lost the first sets of four matches and saw a fifth go into a tiebreaker. But Milos Janicek earned a quick 6-3, 6-1 point for the Ephs and Daniel Murray and Toby Reigeluth closed out their three-set matches to gain crucial points. With the Eagles capturing the other two singles points, senior Josh Lefkowitz rallied to provide the decisive 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-1 defeat of Mark Odgers at No. 1 singles.

To get to the championship, Emory downed Gustavus Adolphus, 4-3, and Williams defeated UC Santa Cruz. In the third-place match, Gustavus Adolphus blanked the Banana Slugs, 5-0.

In the individual championships, Lefkowitz continued his winning streak by advancing through the singles championship field to duel Kevin Whipple of Gustavus Adolphus. He showed why he was the No. 1 seed with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win. The singles title is the first for any Williams tennis player.

In doubles, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' John Cham A-Koon and Ivan Yeh grabbed the title by beating Kalamazoo's Kyle Harding and Jeff Keen 6-4, 6-2.The duo gave Claremont-Mudd-Scripps its fourth doubles title and first since 1993.
