Presidents Council welcomes three new CEOs to fill vacancies

Three new members of the Division III Presidents Council have been appointed to fill immediate vacancies. They are: Richard A. Berman, president of Manhattanville College; Carlos Hernandez, president of New Jersey City University; and Richard H. Wells, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh.

Berman

Berman has been president of Manhattanville since 1995. Before that, he was chief executive officer of Howe-Lewis International. Berman also has been a U.S. Congressional candidate in New York and executive vice-president and a professor at New York University Medical Center. Berman has been assistant dean at Cornell University Medical School and commissioner of the Division of Housing and Community Renewal for the state of New York.

Berman earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, a master's degree in business administration and a master's degree in hospital administration, all from the University of Michigan. He also has a doctorate of humane letters from New York Medical College.

Berman serves on the board of the Lillian Vernon Corporation; the Health Insurance Plans of Greater New York; the New York State Professional Standards & Practices Board for Teaching; and the Commissioner's Advisory Council on Higher Education in New York, among others.

Berman's appointment expires in January 2003, but he is eligible for re-selection.

Hernandez

Hernandez has been president of New Jersey City University since 1993. Before that, he served as provost, vice-president for academic affairs, executive assistant to the president and as a member of the faculty at the institution, which formerly was known as Jersey City State College. While under his leadership, the institution expanded its scope and attained university designation in 1998.

Hernandez earned a bachelor of arts degree from York College of the City University of New York and a doctorate in psychology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Hernandez is a former member of the board of directors of the American Association for Higher Education and has chaired the association's Hispanic Caucus. He also is a former member of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and he served as a member of the American Council on Higher Education's Commission on Higher Education. He is a member of the New Jersey Association of Colleges and Universities' Presidents Council, and he is on the boards of the Eastman Foundation, the Liberty Science Center, and the National Hispanic Business Association, among others.

His appointment expires in January 2004, but he is eligible for re-selection.

Wells

Wells was named the 10th chancellor of the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, in 2000. Before that, Wells was provost and vice-president of academic affairs at Indiana State University. Before that, he was dean of the college of arts and sciences at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Wells also has served as a sociology faculty member at the University of South Alabama, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Coker College.

Wells earned a bachelor of arts degree from William Penn College; a master's degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville; and a doctorate from Texas A&M University, College Station.

Wells has 18 years of teaching experience, and his published works include the book, "American Sociology." He also has served as the National Program Chair for the Association for Humanist Sociology and as a grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation. His essays have appeared in the Houston Chronicle and the Wilmington Star News, among others.

Wells serves on the board of the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce, United Way and the Oshkosh Convention and Visitors Bureau. A former student-athlete, Wells was named to the 1968 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) all-American football team.

His appointment expires in January 2003, but he is eligible for re-selection.
