Sports sponsorship: Moravian College will add men's lacrosse as its 18th varsity sport, beginning with the 2002-03 academic year. Moravian will begin a search for a full-time head men's lacrosse coach and assistant football coach who will develop and launch the lacrosse program and also assist the football squad. Moravian will field a club team in men's lacrosse this spring. Last year, Moravian announced that it would be adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport beginning with 2002-03. The school has hired Natalie Gozzard, also Moravian's new field hockey coach, as the coach of the new women's varsity team.

Conferences: The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) unveiled a new logo recently. It was designed by Paul Sieka, a graphic design student at Iowa State University. "We are very pleased with this new graphical representation for the Iowa Conference," said IIAC Commissioner John Cochrane. "Our goal was to modernize our logo, and in doing so, continue to improve the visibility of the conference statewide and regionally."

Milestones: Jim Burson, men's basketball coach at Muskingum College, earned his 500th win recently with a victory over Otterbein College. In his 35 years of coaching, Burson has coached seven all-Americans and 61 all-conference players. His teams have won six conference championships and have gone to the NCAA Division III tournament five times. "The players make coaching enjoyable; winning makes coaching fun," Burson said. "I think about the seasons and the kids who played for me and it always makes me smile." Burson has been active in amateur basketball on an international level, serving as a coach at the Olympic Sports Festival in 1988 ... Dick Bihr, men's basketball coach at State University College at Buffalo, recorded his 400th career win recently in a victory over State University College at Potsdam. Bihr has an overall record of 400-170 in his 22 seasons at Buffalo State. Bihr has had 10 20-win seasons and just two losing seasons in his tenure at the school, and he has led the Bengals to 10 conference championships and 11 NCAA regional Division III appearances ...

Bill Harris, men's basketball coach at Wheaton College (Illinois) earned the 300th victory of his 17-year career in a 69-63 win over Calvin College. Harris now owns a career record of 300-148, and he has compiled a 173-87 record in 11 seasons at Wheaton. In the 101 years of basketball at Wheaton, Harris' .665 winning percentage is the highest of any coach that has been with the program for three or more years ...

Jane Hildebrand, women's basketball coach at Luther College, earned her 300th career victory recently with a 76-74 win over Simpson College. Hildebrand, who is in her 18th year, has a career mark of 300-150 and has been named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year four times ... Lori Kerans, women's basketball coach at Millikin University, notched her 300th career victory this season. Keran's teams have won 113 of their last 119 games on their home court in Griswold Center. Kerans, formerly the athletics director at Millikin, has served as the university's vice-president of student life and academic development since December 2000. Keran's teams have won seven of the last eight of their conference titles, and have advanced to the NCAA tournament eight times in Keran's 15 seasons ... Terry Meagher, men's ice hockey coach at Bowdoin College, earned his 300th victory recently with a win over Skidmore College ...

Dick Peth, men's basketball coach at Wartburg College, earned his 300th career win recently with a victory over Luther College. Peth sports a 79-41 mark with the Knights in his fifth season at the helm. He had previously earned 221 wins in his 12-year tenure at the University of Denver ... Kerry Prather, men's basketball coach at Franklin College, recently earned his 300th career victory ... Karen McConnell, women's basketball coach at Heidelberg College, picked up her 200th career win recently, giving her a 200-151 mark in her 14 seasons at the school. McConnell led Heidelberg to a Division III national third-place finish in 1990, just her second year at the helm of the program. McConnell was a four-year letter-winner for Heidelberg, and she still ranks 10th on the career scoring list with 907 points ... Fred Richter, women's basketball coach at DeSales University, notched his 200th career victory recently, becoming just the third coach in DeSales history to reach the milestone.

Miscellaneous: Penny Fall, longtime women's volleyball coach and senior woman administrator at Washington College (Maryland), died in an automobile accident December 22. She was 60 years old. Fall began her career at Washington in 1969 and served stints as coach of the school's women's tennis and softball teams in addition to her primary role as women's volleyball coach. She also oversaw the school's cheerleading squad. Fall played a primary role in the advocacy of women's sports at Washington, and in 1997 she was inducted into the school's athletics hall of fame. In 1984, Fall was recognized by the governor of Maryland for her endeavors to achieve gender equity in Maryland's schools through the first 10 years of Title IX ...

St. Mary's College of Maryland unveiled a new athletics logo that will be phased in through the remainder of the current academic year. The new logo was designed by the firm Robert Rytter & Associates, which is based in Butler, Maryland. "The idea was to rework the current logo and capture a unique version of the Seahawk, one that has a proud, aggressive and distinctive look," said Scott Devine, the school's athletics director.
