Wheaton (Massachusetts) continued its winning ways by earning its second straight Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships title May 23-25 at Macalester.

In addition to the two outdoor crowns, the Lyons are on a four-year winning streak in the indoor track and field championships. Wheaton scored 67 points to defeat McMurry by 18 points. Williams was third with 44.

Amber James played a part in three first places for the Lyons. She repeated as the 400-meter dash champion and added a victory in the 200-meter dash. In addition, James and teammates Tessa Donoghue, Niara Woods and Noreen Kordzeil combined to win the 1,600-meter relay.

Donoghue also was an individual champion, winning the long jump. She also placed fourth in the triple jump.

McMurry moved up two spots from its 2001 team position, and the second-place finish is its best in the championships' history. Darcell Edwards won the triple jump for the second year in a row and was two inches behind Donoghue as the long-jump runner-up.

Talitha Belcher was McMurry's other leading performer, coming in second in the 100-meter dash, fourth in the 200-meter dash, and anchoring the Indians' victorious 400-meter relay team.

Williams earned third without benefit of a first-place performance. Jenn Campbell was second for the Ephs in the inaugural 3,000-meter steeplechase competition, and Healy Thompson was second in the shot put.

Keene State's Mary Proulx joined James as an individual double winner. Proulx was first in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. It was her second straight championship with two victories, as she won the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs in 2001.

Muffy Israel of Carthage, Kelly Bowen of Nebraska Wesleyan and Christina Scherwin of Moravian set meet records. Israel won the 100-meter dash in 11.71 seconds, Bowen upped the pole vault mark to 12 feet, 6 1/4 inches, and Scherwin extended the javelin throw record to 169 feet, 7 inches.

Emory's Danielle LeSure repeated as the winner in the hammer throw.
