Schallenkamp was elected at the October 31 meeting of the Presidents Council and will replace Longwood University President Patricia Cormier. Cormier's term will expire at the end of the 2003 Convention.

Schallenkamp became the 14th president of Emporia State in 1997. During her tenure, the athletics program has won 10 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championships, earned eight national top-10 finishes, had four national player of the year honorees and been recognized with four NCAA postgraduate scholarship recipients and an NCAA Today's Top VIII winner. "Athletics is a key part of the educational experience at Emporia State," Schallenkamp said. "We try to foster a positive environment of sportsmanship and integrity for our student-athletes."

Schallenkamp began her career in higher education in 1973 as a professor of communication disorders at Northern State University. She served as department chair from 1982 to 1984 and was named dean of graduate studies and research in 1984. In 1988, she was named provost of Chadron State College.

From 1992 to 1997, she served as provost at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater.

Schallenkamp served on the board of trustees of the North Central Association (NCA) from 1992 to 1997 and chaired its Task Force on Organizational Effectiveness and Future Directions. She also served on the assessment committee for NCA and assisted in drafting the guidelines related to student outcomes of learning. She has served on more than 25 NCA accreditation teams.

She earned her Ph.D. in communication disorders from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 1982. She also received a master's degree from the University of South Dakota and a bachelor's degree from Northern State.

Capon

Capon was elected Division II Management Council chair at the October 21-22 meeting of that group. His election was ratified at the October 31 Presidents Council meeting.
