Final-hole drama gives Rollins championship edge in men's golf

Rollins senior Rob Oppenheim sank a birdie putt on the final hole in the Division II Men's Golf Championships, giving the Tars a one-stroke team victory over Cal State Stanislaus.

The Tars finished the May 21-24 tournament at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, with a score of 1,194 (301-310-295-288). The Warriors carded a 1,195 (297-304-303-291) total for second place. Rollins' win was its second and first since 1970.

Alex Smith led the Tars in the final round with a one-under 70. Oppenheim finished with an even-par 71 to place third overall in the tournament with a score of 290. Derek Murphy fired a final-round 72 and Ben Daughan chipped in a 75.

The team's 288 was the second best score of the day. Florida Southern, which placed third two strokes behind the Tars, posted a 287 score to finish with a total of 1,196. North Alabama took fourth with a 1,202 total, followed by South Carolina-Aiken at 1,203.

Rollins dominated on the final hole, going three under par in the final round as Oppenheim, Smith and Murphy birdied.

J.J. Jakovac of Cal State Chico fired a final-round 66 to claim medalist honors, finishing three strokes ahead of North Alabama's Jason Vaughn. Oppenheim and Matt Dura of Francis Marion finished in a tie for third. Bryan Clarke of West Florida and Josh Immordino of Western Washington tied for fifth with a 292 total.
