Central Oklahoma turns two '13s' into string of good fortune

The NCAA News

For Central Oklahoma, 13 was a lucky number in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. The Bronchos, the top-rated squad during the season, won their 13th straight Midwest Regional during qualification for the finals, then claimed their 13th championship (NCAA and NAIA), edging two-time defending champion North Dakota State by 11 1/2 points.

The tournament, which was held March 8-9 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, saw Central Oklahoma win its first national title since 1995. The Bronchos won eight NAIA titles and then claimed four straight NCAA Division II crowns from 1992 to 1995.

Central Oklahoma finished with 128 points, besting North Dakota State's 116 1/2. South Dakota State was third with 67, followed by Ashland in fourth and Nebraska-Omaha in fifth.

The Bronchos finished with seven all-Americans, including individual champions Cole Province (133-pound class), Matt Dodgen (141-pound class), Shawn Silvis (165-pound class) and Muhammed Lawal (197-pound class). Chris Saferite also had a strong showing as the runner-up in the 125-pound class. Jeff Henning placed third in the 184-pound class and Michael Barreras was fourth in the 149-pound class to cap a balanced Broncho lineup.

"What a great, great effort from our team," Central Oklahoma coach David James said. "We came here really focused on winning a national championship and we wrestled extremely well for two days. It's been a few years since we won one of these, and it feels really good to get our program back on top."

Province won the 133-pound title for the second year in a row in dominating fashion, scoring an 11-3 major decision over Adams State's Jimmy Melek. Province had four takedowns, the final one with eight seconds left to secure the eight-point major decision.

Dodgen captured his crown with a 5-4 triumph over Ashland's Chris Shears, breaking a 2-2 tie with a three-point near-fall early in the third period. Shears escaped with 1:11 left and got a penalty point with 0:20 remaining, but Dodgen held on for the victory.

Silvis narrowly defeated South Dakota State's Tyler Bryant, hanging on for a 3-2 triumph and ending the season with 22 straight wins. Silvis broke a 2-2 tie with an escape early in the second period and neither wrestler scored again, though Bryant had Silvis' leg in the air looking for a winning takedown for the final six seconds of the bout.

Lawal cruised to an 8-4 finals victory over Nebraska-Omaha's Chad Wallace to complete a 39-2 season with his 23rd consecutive win. Lawal had three takedowns and was in control in winning the championship after finishing as the runner-up last year.
