John Kemboi and Terrance Woods both won two events to lead Abilene Christian to the Division II Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships team title March 8-9 in Boston.

The Eastern College Athletic Conference hosted the championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

Abilene Christian broke a tie with St. Augustine's for most team titles by winning for the ninth time. The Wildcats compiled 74 points, with St. Augustine's and Western State tying for second with 44.

Woods placed first in the high jump and triple jump for the second time, but neither victory was of the consecutive nature. He won the high jump in 2000 and the triple jump in 1999.

Woods set a meet record in the high jump, clearing 7 feet, 4 1/2 inches.

"My No. 1 goal coming into the meet was to set the meet record in both of those events," he said. "I guess it wasn't meant for me to set both records, but I'll take the double."

Kemboi repeated his 2001 wins in the 800-meter and mile runs. "John had a good run in the mile, and then he came back in the 800 meters and just showed tremendous heart and courage," said Abilene Christian assistant coach Kenneth Hines. "He passed three guys in the last 150 meters, and didn't pass the last guy until there were about 15 meters left in the race."

Hines led the team at the meet in place of head coach Jon Murray, who was in Abilene with his wife and their newborn child.

The Wildcats also received second-place performances from Richard Phillips in the 60-meter high hurdles and Alfred Rugema in the 5,000-meter run.

St. Augustine's kept its streak alive of finishing first or second in all 17 championships. Anthony Campbell finished second in the 400-meter dash and ran the anchor leg for the Falcons' winning 1,600-meter relay.

Western State scored all of its points in the mile and 5,000-meter runs. Michael Aish became the first athlete in the championships' history to win the same event four times as he recorded another win in the 5,000. Aish also was the runner-up to Kemboi in the mile.

Aish, Woods and Kemboi also moved into a tie for most individual titles in the championships with four.

North Carolina Central's Jason Smoots (60-meter dash), New York Tech's Orville Taylor (400-meter dash) and Lewis' Duane Chappell (pole vault) also won their events for the second consecutive year.
