The Southern California men's tennis team stormed into the Division I Men's Tennis Championships as an underdog and emerged May 21 as the victors. The Trojans downed higher-seeded opponents in every round of play, finally upending defending champion Georgia, 4-1.

Retiring Southern California coach Dick Leach went out in style with his fourth national championship and first since 1994.

"This is my Cinderella team," he said. "I'm glad we got it done before midnight; we might have some pumpkins...This is unbelievable. I keep pinching myself."

In the final, the Trojans dominated the doubles point with 8-3 and 8-4 wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, to take a 1-0 lead. Daniel Langre gave the squad its second point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.

Georgia's Matias Boeker, who walked away with the team, singles, and doubles titles in 2001, responded with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles. It was the Bulldogs' only point for the match.

Ruben Torres gave the Trojans their third point, and Prakash Amritaj's 7-6(3), 7-5 win at the No. 3 spot earned the title for Southern California. Amritaj was named the tournament's most outstanding player after providing the deciding wins for his team three straight days.

"I have played a lot of breakers all season," he said. "When you've played for an hour and it is six all, it is hard to pass up."

In the individual championships, Boeker was able to retain his singles title with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Kentucky's Jesse Witten May 27. Trailing, 5-4, in the first set, Boeker won the final nine games to win the match. Boeker closed the season with 21 straight victories at No. 1 singles for Georgia

"I think I was a little nervous at the beginning," Boeker said. "It seemed like I was scrambling for every point. I got the break when I wanted it and got some momentum to close out. Today my serve wasn't going well. I was having to grind for so many points, I was getting tired."

In doubles, the duo of Andrew Colombo and Mark Kovacs of Auburn defeated Stanford's Scott Lipsky and David Martin, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. The title is Auburn's first in NCAA men's tennis.
