The Texas Longhorns pulled out their third consecutive Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships team title in dramatic fashion, coming back to take the lead in the second-to-last event and holding on in the final event for the victory.

The three-day meet March 28-30 at Georgia featured a tug of war between Texas and Stanford for the crown. The Longhorns finished with 512 points, just 11 more than the Cardinal. That margin of victory is the closest since the advent of the 16-place scoring system in 1985.

With its ninth title, Texas ties Southern California in all-time men's swimming and diving championships. Rounding out the top five was Auburn (365 1/2), Florida (277) and Southern California (272).

Divers made the difference for the Longhorns. Justin Dumais and his brother Troy contributed substantial points to the team total. Troy was named diver of the meet for the third straight time after sweeping the springboard events and taking fifth on platform. With his win in three-meter, he became the first diver in NCAA history to win an event all four years. Brother Justin took second on platform, fourth on three-meter and seventh on one-meter.

Brendan Hansen, who won his second consecutive 100- and 200-yard breaststroke titles for the Longhorns said, "This is a whole team effort for us. I never thought about me individually in the race, I just wanted to get our team as psyched up as I could."

Joining Hansen in that effort was fellow Longhorn Ian Crocker, who set an NCAA record in the 100-yard butterfly. No other Texas swimmers claimed event titles.

"Nobody said that the team race was going to be easy, and the divers kept us in it. We are definitely the Texas diving and swimming team, not the Texas swimming and diving team," Hansen said.

Swimmer of the meet Erik Vendt from Southern California claimed victories in the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley. He took second in the 500-yard freestyle as well. Stanford won three relay titles and featured two individual titlists in Markus Rogan, who won the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley, and Peter Marshall, who won the 100-yard backstroke.
