Championship is gravy for Brigham Young's cross country team

There was one holiday dinner that was going to be delicious, no matter what problems may have occurred in the kitchen.

Brigham Young made sure of that by successfully defending the team title at the Division I Women's Cross Country Championships November 25 at Indiana State.

"It will make Thanksgiving turkey taste really good," said Brigham Young head coach Patrick Shane. "The girls ran a great race. It is always a thrill to win a national championship, and it is really exciting to win back-to-back championships."

Brigham Young had a team total of 85 points. Stanford finished second for the fifth time with 113 points, and Notre Dame placed third for its best effort in the championships' 22-year history.

The recipe for Brigham Young's victory was similar to its 2001 triumph. Michaela Mannova was the Cougars' first finisher for the second year in a row, and she was fifth overall for the second consecutive championships.

"I could not have had a better race," Mannova said. "We were ready for a snowstorm, so the sunny weather was like heaven."

Just as Jessie Kindschi took seventh place for the Cougars last year, Brigham Young's Kassi Andersen occupied the same spot in 2002. "We did all we could, and fortunately for us it was enough," Andersen said.

Katie Martin (20th), Breanne Sandberg (41st) and Jaime Cottle (46th) were Brigham Young's other scorers.

Alicia Craig ended in third place for Stanford, with teammate Lauren Fleshman fourth. It was Fleshman's third top-10 finish, after earning third place last year and fifth in 1999.

Molly Huddle topped Notre Dame by placing sixth.

Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina seized the lead early in the race and went on to become the Tar Heels' first individual champion. Flanagan's victorious time of 19 minutes, 36 seconds for 6,000 meters was 9.9 seconds better than the mark of second-place finisher Kate O'Neill of Yale.

"It's very exciting," said Flanagan. "You pump up a national championship as one of those things that is so difficult to win, and this year it wasn't as hard as I expected it to be. That's a tribute to how hard I've worked and the mental and physical toughness I've gained over the last year."
