Winter sports championships previews -- Men's and Women's Rifle

Dates and site: The finals will be March 15-16 at Murray State's Stewart Stadium Rifle Range.

Field: A total of 48 competitors will be selected to the championships. The top eight or fewer teams in each team event and 40 or fewer individuals in each individual event qualify for the championships.

Selection date: March 1.

2001 team champion: Alaska Fairbanks.

Top team contenders: Alaska Fairbanks, West Virginia, Xavier, Kentucky, Tennessee Tech.

Shooters to watch: Matt Emmons and Per Sandberg, Alaska Fairbanks; Thrine Kane, Xavier; Liz Smith, West Virginia; Bradley Wheeldon, Kentucky.

Three of the teams currently ranked in the top five (Alaska Fairbanks, West Virginia and Tennessee Tech) have combined to win 20 of the 22 rifle championships in NCAA history. Murray State, the host institution, owns the other two.
