Spring sports championships previews -- Men's Tennis

DIVISION I

Dates and sites: Regionals will be at campus sites May 11-12. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be May 18-27 at Texas A&M.

Field: The team championships comprises 64 teams. Individual championships consist of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams.

2001 team champion: Georgia.

2001 individual champions: Singles -- Georgia's Matias Boeker; doubles -- Georgia's Boeker won with Travis Parrott last year and will try to defend with new partner Bo Hodge.

Top team contenders: Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, UCLA, Pepperdine.

Top individual contenders: Matias Boeker, Georgia; Amer Delic, Illinois; Alex Hartman, Mississippi; Tobias Clemens, UCLA; Al Garland, Pepperdine.

DIVISION II

Dates and sites: Regionals will be at campus sites May 3-5. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be May 9-12 at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Rockhurst will host along with the Kansas City Sports Commission.

Field: The team championship comprises 64 teams. Single-elimination tournaments will be played at 16 regional sites (three or four teams at each site) and the finals site (16-team bracket) to determine the national champion.

2001 team champion: Rollins.

Top team contenders: Brigh\am Young-Hawaii, Rollins, Drury, Valdosta State, West Florida.

Players to watch: Jan Krejci, Brigham Young-Hawaii; Carlos Custodio, Rollins; Mehdi Belbacha, Drury; Tobias Huning, Valdosta State; Radovan Chrz, West Florida.

DIVISION III

Dates and sites: Preliminary rounds wiil be held at campus sites of participating institutions May 11-12. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be May 17-22 at UC Santa Cruz.

Field: The team championship consists of 27 teams. Individual championships consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Teams will play a single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion.

2001 team champion: Williams.

2001 individual champions: Singles -- UC Santa Cruz's Derek Fitzpatrick graduated and the field is open; doubles -- UC Santa Cruz's Fitzpatrick is gone but Nick Cunningham returns.

Top team contenders: Williams, Gustavus Adolphus, UC Santa Cruz, Redlands, Emory.

Top individual contenders: Josh Leftkowitz, Williams; Eric Butorac, Gustavus Adolphus; Brian Casey, UC Santa Cruz; Rob Candiotty, Redlands; Justin Lavner, Emory.

Brigham Young-Hawaii's No. 1 ranking on March 1 marked the first time the team has achieved the top ranking since the squad moved from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1998-99.
