Spring sports championships previews -- Men's Golf

DIVISION I

Dates and sites: The following regionals will be conducted May 16-18: East -- Ansley Golf Club's Settin' Down Creek, Roswell, Georgia (Georgia Tech, host); Central -- Pleasant Valley Golf Course, Little Rock, Arkansas (Arkansas, Little Rock, host); and West -- Championship Golf Course, Albuquerque (New Mexico, host). Ohio State will host the finals May 29-June 1 at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.

Field: A total of 421 participants will be selected for regional competition, with 30 teams and 156 players advancing to the championship finals.

Selection date: May 6.

2001 team champion: Florida.

2001 individual champion: Nick Gilliam, Florida.

Top team contenders: Georgia Tech, Clemson, Wake Forest, Florida, Oklahoma State, Southern California, TCU.

Top individual contenders: Troy Matteson, Georgia Tech; Camilo Villegas, Florida; Graeme McDowell, Alabama-Birmingham; D.J. Trahan, Clemson; Ryan Hybl, Georgia.

DIVISION II

Dates and sites: The following five super regionals will be conducted April 28-May 8: Northeast/East -- River Greens Golf Club, West Lafayette, Ohio [Charleston (West Virginia), host]; Atlantic/Southeast -- North Shore Golf Club, Sneads Ferry, North Carolina (Pfeiffer, host); Central/Great Lakes -- Lassing Pointe Golf Club, Union, Kentucky, (Northern Kentucky, host); South/South Central --Shangri-La Resort, Monkey Island, Oklahoma (Central Oklahoma, host); Northwest/West -- Estrella Mountain Ranch Golf Club, Goodyear, Arizona (Grand Canyon, host). The finals will be conducted May 21-24 at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. The Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College will host.

Field: A total of 80 teams and 50 individuals will be selected for regional competition, with 10 regional champions, 10 low individuals not advancing, eight at-large teams and two at-large individuals advancing to the championships. The number of participants allowed at the finals is 102.

Selection date: April 26 for regionals; May 10 for at-large berths and individuals.

2001 team champion: West Florida.

2001 individual champion: Steve Sokol, Florida Southern.

Top team contenders: Florida Southern, West Florida, Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State Bakersfield, UC Davis, Pfeiffer.

Top individual contenders: Steve Sokol, Florida Southern; Steve Paramore, Florida Southern; Kevin Warrick and Bryan Clarke, West Florida; Marc Lawless, Cal State Stanislaus.

DIVISION III

Dates and sites: The finals will be held May 13-16 at the Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Nebraska, with Nebraska Wesleyan serving as host.

Field: A total of 120 participants from six districts and 30 at-large individuals will compete for the team and individual championships.

Selection date: May 2.

2001 team champion: Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

2001 individual champion: Chad Collins, Methodist.

Top team contenders: Methodist, Guilford, Greensboro, Ogelethorpe, Gustavus Adolphus, Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Top individual contenders: Greg Hanna, Methodist; Nick Jacobi, Methodist; Savio Nazareth and Andrew Biggadike, Guilford; Ryan Dorff, Otterbein; Nick Gardner, Otterbein.

Last year in Division II, a playoff was necessary to determine a champion after Florida Southern's Steve Sokol (who went on to win the individual title), West Florida's Kevin Warrick and Cal State Stanislaus' Marc Lawless were knotted after four rounds. All three contenders return this year.
