Athletics departments received information in September regarding two important health-screening programs for their student-athletes. Athletics departments were directed to contact their health and counseling centers to ask about plans to conduct these screenings on campus. For additional general information about these programs, visit the Screening for Mental Health Web site at www.mentalhealthscreening.org.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is February 23 to March 2, 2003. The National Eating Disorders Screening Program (NEDSP) is implemented during Eating Disorders Awareness Week. The NEDSP includes an educational presentation on eating disorders and/or related topics (for example, body image, nutrition), a written screening test and the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a health professional. It also provides individuals with information about how to help friends or family members who may be suffering from an eating disorder. NEDSP's national office provides each site with materials for the screening and ideas for ways the program can be modified for use by colleges, hospitals, schools or eating disorders clinics.

National Alcohol Screening Day is April 10, 2003. National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) is an outreach, education and screening program that raises awareness about alcohol's effect on personal health and well-being. The alcohol program includes an educational presentation, a written screening questionnaire and an opportunity for participants to meet with a health professional to discuss personal or family or friend's alcohol issues
