Men's gymnastics group selects scholar-athletes for 2002

The College Gymnastics Association has announced its top national academic teams and all-America scholar-athlete awards in men's gymnastics for 2002.

After earning runner-up status the past two years, College of William and Mary vaulted to the 2002 national academic team title with a combined team grade-point average of 3.348. Stanford University; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; the University of California, Berkeley; and defending academic champion University of Vermont comprised the top five. Springfield College, 2002 NCAA champion University of Oklahoma, Pennsylvania State University, the U.S. Naval Academy and Ohio State University rounded out the top 10.

Sixty-two individual gymnasts also were honored as all-America scholar-athletes by attaining at least a 3.500 grade-point average in addition to earning a minimum NCAA gymnastics score of 8.0 during the 2001-02 academic year.

Several gymnasts have the distinction of earning the award for the fourth time. The University of Iowa's Brian Christie and Andy Thornton; the U.S. Air Force Academy's James Hayes III; William and Mary's Craig Wetmore; and Penn State's Jose Palacios are four-time honorees.
