Fall championships previews -- Men's Soccer

Division I

Dates and sites: Preliminary-round games will be played at campus sites -- first-round games November 22 or 23, second-round games November 27, third-round games November 30 or December 1 and quarterfinals by December 8. The semifinals and final will be December 13 and 15 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.

Field: The championship comprises a 48-team single-elimination tournament. Twenty-two conferences receive automatic bids and the remaining 26 teams are selected at large. The top eight teams are seeded in the bracket, with the remaining 40 teams paired according to geographic proximity.

Selection date: November 18.

2001 champion: North Carolina.

Top team contenders: Stanford, Wake Forest, Indiana, Southern Methodist.

Players to watch: Pat Noonan (Indiana); William Hesmer (Wake Forest); Roger Levesque (Stanford); Diego Walsh (Southern Methodist).

Division II

Dates and sites: All games will be played at campus sites -- first-round games by November 17 and quarterfinals by November 24. The semifinals and final will be played December 5 and 7 or December 6 and 8 on the campus of a participating institution.

Field: The championship comprises a 16-team single-elimination tournament, with two teams chosen from each of the eight geographical regions.

Selection date: November 11.

2001 champion: Tampa.

Top team contenders: Southern Connecticut State, Lynn, South Carolina-Spartanburg, Mercyhurst, Seattle Pacific.

Players to watch: Oliver Medina (Southern Connecticut State); John Kitcho (Mercyhurst).


Division III

Dates and sites: All games will be played at campus sites -- first-round games November 13, second- and third-round games by November 17 and quarterfinals by November 23. The semifinals and final will be played November 30 and December 1 on the campus of participating institution.

Field: The championship comprises a 44-team single-elimination tournament.

Selection date: November 10.

2001 champion: Richard Stockton.

Top team contenders: Rowan, Virginia Wesleyan, Trinity (Texas), St. Lawrence.

Players to watch: Kelvin Murray (Virginia Wesleyan); Dustin Crooker (St. Lawrence); Josh Card [Trinity (Texas)].
