Each year, the National Youth Sports Program conducts a T-shirt design competition in which participants compete to have their designs featured as the official NYSP logo for the following summer. Every NYSP camp was encouraged to hold a T-shirt design contest as a part of the educational component. Designs were judged on artistic quality, originality, creativity and the interpretation of the 2002 "Family Day Celebration" theme. The contest allows participants to creatively express their talents, and create a sense of pride and accomplishment at the NYSP camps, and to increase visibility and public awareness of NYSP. This year's winner was 13-year-old Heidi Tenpas of Lawrence, Kansas. Tenpas will receive an award for achievement at the NYSP National Workshop January 19-22 in Orlando, Florida. In addition, the 12 runner-ups also receive special awards, and their designs are featured in the 2003 NYSP calendar
