WOMEN'S ATHLETICS

Committee asks for educational sessions on homophobia

The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics has asked that educational presentations about homophobia be conducted at the 2002 NCAA Convention (as an Association-wide session) and at other key NCAA meetings during the 2001-02 academic year.

The committee emphasized its belief that athletics administrators have a responsibility to provide student-athletes with a safe environment in which to develop academically and athletically. The committee also expressed concern that homophobia had numerous negative consequences for athletics administrators and coaches, particularly women. The committee further noted its belief that homophobia may be a contributing factor to the significant reduction in numbers of women in coaching and athletics administration.

MINORITY ISSUES

Committee discusses American Indiana mascot, imagery issues

The issue of American Indian mascots, nicknames and imagery was atop the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee's agenda during the group's July 11-13 meeting.

The committee's review was prompted in part by an NCAA Executive Committee charge to review the matter in light of a U.S. Commission on Civil Rights statement in April that non-Indian schools, colleges and universities should discontinue use of American Indian mascots, nicknames and imagery.
