Longtime Kentucky sports broadcaster dies

Cawood Ledford, longtime sports broadcaster for the University of Kentucky, died recently from cancer at the age of 75.

Ledford launched his broadcasting career in 1951, when he began doing sports broadcasts and selling advertising for WHLN in Harlan, Kentucky. He did his first broadcast for the university -- a football game between Kentucky and Texas A&M -- in 1953.

During a career that eventually spanned four decades, Ledford called Kentucky football and basketball games, 18 Men's Final Fours, 22 Kentucky Derbys, the World Series, The Masters, professional basketball games, Little League events and boxing matches. The Basketball Hall of Famer also was the first person to earn entry into both the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. He was chosen as sportscaster of the year 21 times between 1967 and 1990 and was the first person who wasn't a player or coach to have a jersey retired in Rupp Arena.

Ledford retired as Kentucky's play-by-play announcer in 1992.
