Greensboro selects Payne for basketball post

Greensboro has chosen Ann Payne as head women's basketball coach. Payne's husband, Eddie Payne, is head men's basketball coach at the school.

Although Ann Payne has been out of the college coaching ranks for the past 14 years raising the couple's son, she has spent the time volunteering as a youth coach for her son's teams.

Payne began her collegiate coaching career in 1975 at Tift College, where she also served as coordinator of women's athletics. After two seasons there, she moved to Berry College, where she coached for three years. In 1981, Payne assumed the top post at Alabama. In her only season at the school, she guided the squad to a 21-12 record. Payne also has been head coach at North Carolina-Charlotte and Belmont Abbey.

Payne earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from West Georgia College and a master's degree in physical education from North Georgia College. In addition to taking responsibility for the women's basketball program, Payne also will serve as assistant women's tennis coach at Greensboro.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Mark Devine, assistant athletics director at Providence, was selected as interim athletics director at the school. Devine has been with the athletics department since 1993 ... Scot Reisinger was promoted to director of athletics at Notre Dame (Maryland). For the past two years, Reisinger has served as assistant athletics director, sports information director and head basketball coach ... Jim Middleton was selected as athletics director at Southwest Baptist. Middleton has been head women's basketball coach at the school ... Winthrop's Tom Hickman was awarded a three-year contract extension through the 2004-05 academic year. Hickman has been athletics director since 1996, and is a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee ... Plymouth State chose John P. Clark as athletics director. Clark has been interim athletics director at the school ... Percy L. Caldwell assumed responsibilities as director of athletics at Winston-Salem. Caldwell, who replaces Anne Little, has been director of planning and development and dean of instruction of arts and science at Iowa Valley Community College District ... UNLV appointed John Robinson as athletics director. Robinson also serves as head football coach ... John Griffith was named as athletics director at Daniel Webster. Griffith, who has been an associate athletics director with the school for five years, has fulfilled athletics director duties on an interim basis since the summer ... Colorado State hired Jeffrey Hathaway as director of athletics. Most recently, Hathaway has been executive associate athletics director at Connecticut.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Daniel Webster appointed Danielle Miller as senior woman administrator and athletic trainer. Miller has been with the school for five years ... Juli Peterson was named as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director for NCAA compliance at St Peter's. Peterson has been administrative assistant to the commissioner at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Cindy Hartmann was elevated to associate athletics director for compliance and senior woman administrator at Dayton. Hartmann has been assistant athletics director since January 2000 and senior woman administrator since September 2000 ... Carroll elevated Kris Jacobsen to associate athletics director. Jacobsen serves as head women's basketball and softball coach ... John Blanchard was hired as associate athletics director and director of the academic support program for student-athletes at North Carolina. Since December 2000, Blanchard has served as a consultant for the law firm of Bond, Schoeneck and King. The school also announced Martina Ballen as senior associate athletics director for business and finance and Steve Kirschner as associate athletics director for communications ... South Florida appointed Corey Johnson as deputy athletics director. Johnson has been athletics director at Nova Southeastern since 1996.

Football -- Western Kentucky agreed to a four-year contract extension with head coach Jack Harbaugh through December 31, 2005.

Alexander has been linebackers coach at Montana State University-Northern for three seasons ... Mike Lazusky assumed responsibilities as offensive line coach at Defiance ... Jeremy Bogan was named as head coach at Saint Rose. Bogan, who succeeds P.J. Motsiff, was an assistant with the program last season ... Peter McGovern was named as head coach at Southwest Baptist ... Sports medicine assistant -- Northern Iowa hired Megan Brady as assistant director of sports medicine to replace Nancy Bowers. Since last September, Brady has worked as assistant athletic trainer and physical education instructor at Morningside.

Strength and conditioning -- Bryan McGovern was hired as strength and conditioning coach at Binghamton. For the past two years, McGovern has fulfilled similar duties at Richmond ... UC Riverside named Josh Everett as strength and conditioning coach ... Tom Kelso was awarded responsibilities as strength and conditioning coach at Illinois-Chicago. Most recently, Kelso, who replaces Jim Hughes, has been head strength and conditioning coach at Southeast Missouri State ... Wisconsin-Eau Claire hired Jeff Trochil as head strength and conditioning coach, football inside linebackers coach and assistant track and field coach. NOTABLES

Patricia Acheson and Gerald E. Rosen were named as winners of the 2001 Rolex Achievement Awards presented by Rolex and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The award is given to past participants of collegiate tennis who have achieve excellence in their careers. In 1974, Acheson became the seventh female to join the U.S. Secret Service and the first female assigned to the vice-presidential protection division. Acheson, who retired from the Secret Service in 1994, was captain of the women's team at Queens. Rosen has been a federal judge since 1990. He competed on the men's team at Kalamazoo for three years.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association named the following as Diamond Sports Catchers of the Year for 2001 for NCAA Divisions I, II and III: Stacey Nuveman, junior, UCLA; Blake Baskin, senior, Kennesaw State; and Annie Van Wetzinga, senior, Central (Iowa).

DEATHS

Rashidi Wheeler, a football player at Northwestern, collapsed and died after having an asthma attack during a conditioning drill. Wheeler was 22.

Rev. Paul C. Reinert, chancellor emeritus and former president at Saint Louis, died July 22. Reinert was 90.

Former Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis softball student-athlete Christy Adamson died in an automobile accident August 8. Adamson, 23, established the school record for stolen bases and stolen base attempts. She also was first team all-conference and Newcomer of the Year in 1999 for the Mid-Continent Conference.

Joseph C. Duff, former head baseball coach at Navy, passed away July 30. Duff was 78.

John Murphy, former president at Thomas More, died August 1. Murphy was 78.
