Murray takes top football post at Benedictine

Murray has guided the football program at Dubuque for the last four seasons, in addition to serving as assistant baseball coach from 1999 to 2000. Before joining Dubuque, Murray spent 10 seasons as defensive coordinator at Illinois Wesleyan, where he also was head men's and women's track coach, golf coach and recruiting coordinator. In 1986-87, Murray worked as athletics recruiting coordinator and assistant football coach at MacMurray.

A two-sport student-athlete at Illinois Wesleyan, Murray was a starting tight end for two seasons and a baseball infielder for four years. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Illinois Wesleyan in 1984 and currently is working toward a master's degree in athletics administration at Illinois State.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Roy J. Nirschel was appointed as president at Roger Williams. Nirschel has been president at Newbury ... Heidelberg announced Kenneth J. Porada as interim president. Porada has been vice-president for academic affairs and dean of the college at the school since 1990 and a member of the faculty since 1978.

Don Lemish, athletics director at Longwood since April 2000, announced plans to retire, effective January 1, 2002 ... Howard Payne chose Steve Rhodes as athletics director ... Tim Van Alstine was named as athletics director at Western Illinois to succeed the retired Helen Smiley ... Benedictine (Illinois) selected John Ostrowski as acting athletics director, replacing John Stachniak. Ostrowski has been assistant athletics director for three years and head baseball coach for 29 seasons.

Union (New York) named Charles E. McClinton Jr. as associate director of athletics. Most recently, McClinton has been with USA Hockey, Inc. ... Tim O'Connell was elevated to associate athletics director/director of the University of Dayton Arena. For the past two seasons, Seeley has served as head women's ice hockey coach ... Eric Capper was named as an assistant athletics director for media services at North Texas ... Southern Mississippi appointed Scott Carr as assistant athletics director for facilities and event management, Paul Batchelder as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions, and John Miller as assistant athletics director for football operations ... Longwood appointed Jason Hamm as head men's and women's coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition in the fall. Hamm, who also will serve as assistant men's basketball coach, has been assistant boys' basketball coach at Ryan (Texas) High School ... Southern New Hampshire hired Kevin Beck as head men's coach. Since 1999, Beck, who replaces Paul Dutton, has served as a head boys' and girls' cross country and track coach at the high-school level.

For the past year, Beil has been an assistant cross country and track coach at East Carolina ... Iona chose Jason Saretsky as assistant men's and women's cross country and track coach ... Fencing assistant -- Aaron Kandlik was chosen as an assistant men's and women's coach at Vassar. Kandlik most recently has been an assistant at UC San Diego.

Field hockey -- Nichole Fureman was selected as head coach at Catawba ... Sarah Sobon was hired as head coach at Randolph-Macon. The former assistant coach at Washington (Maryland) most recently has been head varsity field hockey and head junior varsity lacrosse coach at The Hun School of Princeton (New Jersey).

Field hockey assistant -- Brown promoted assistant coach Tara Harrington to associate head coach. Harrington has worked as an assistant with the program for the past three seasons.

Football assistants -- Freddie Kitchens resigned as a graduate assistant coach at LSU to become running backs coach and work with special teams at North Texas ... Central Connecticut State appointed Dave Elliott, Dave Arnold, Mike Hodgson, Joe Connell and Chad Wilt as assistants ... Joe Trezza was selected as running backs coach at Lebanon Valley ... Shawn Durocher was appointed as head women's coach at Mount Holyoke. Durocher has been assistant golf professional for the past three years at Delray Dunes Golf Club in Florida ... Manhattan awarded head swimming coach Walter Olsewski with additional duties as head golf coach. Olsewski will retain head swimming coach responsibilities ... Steve Richards was chosen as head women's coach at Franklin, replacing Tracy Chapman. From 1998 to 2000, Richards was dean of admissions and financial aid at the school.

Brown appointed Peter Brown as director of swimming and aquatics to succeed Matt Kredich. Brown has been head men's coach at Penn State since 1984 ... Synchronized swimming -- Heather Olson was named as head women's coach at Stanford. Olson, who was a volunteer assistant coach with the program last year, currently is working as director of the U.S. Synchronized Swimming National Team.

Men's and women's tennis -- St. Joseph's (Indiana) hired Donn Gobbie as head men's and women's coach and director of compliance. Gobbie, who replaces Ken Carrillo, has most recently served as head boys' tennis coach at Gary Roosevelt (Indiana) High School and as head girls' tennis coach at Hammond (Indiana) High School ... Jen Callen was appointed as head women's coach at North Carolina ... George Washington named Helen B. Andrews as head women's coach. Most recently, Andrews has been assistant tennis professional at the Columbia Country Club ... Michael Coleman was selected as head women's coach at George Mason, succeeding Gary Quam, who will continue as head men's tennis coach. Coleman has guided the men's and women's programs at Western Maryland for the past two seasons ... Alejandro Pino assumed duties as head men's and women's coach at Loras ... Ohio State named Chuck Merzbacher as head women's coach ... Stevan Kuzman was hired as head men's and women's coach at Union (New York) ... Men's and women's track and field -- Virginia Commonwealth's Mia Pollard resigned as head women's track and field and cross country coach. Pollard has guided the programs since 1999. The school chose assistant Todd Morgan as interim head coach ... Ricky Vaughn was hired as head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach at Texas-Pan American. For the past three years, Vaughn has served as an assistant at LSU.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Jacksonville selected Ron Grigg as associate head coach ... LSU chose Kent Pagel as throws coach ... John Rembao resigned after four years as an assistant women's track and field coach and cross country coach at Texas. The school appointed John Hayes as Rembao's successor. Hayes has spent the past three seasons as head cross country coach at Morehouse.

Men's and women's volleyball -- West Chester appointed Sharon Bonaventure as full-time head women's coach ... Sarah Watters assumed head women's coaching duties at Marist ... Winthrop announced Joel McCartney as head women's coach ... Andrew Jay Joseph was hired as head women's coach and intramural and event coordinator at Agnes Scott. O'Brien has been head coach at Niagara Community College for one season ... Adams State added Jamie Ivers and Katie Moskowitz as assistants. Ivers is a 2000 graduate of Cal State Fullerton. Wrestling -- Mark Holdern was named as head coach at Olivet. Holdern replaces the retired Jare Klein.

Academic services assistant -- Jennifer L. Hayman was chosen as academic support assistant at George Washington. Hayman has been coaching junior varsity field hockey and middle school lacrosse at The Rivers School in Massachusetts.

Administrative -- Scott Nunez assumed duties as assistant to the director of athletics for internal operations at Southeastern Louisiana ... Cal State Fullerton selected Robert Scialdone as chief financial officer for athletics ... Roger Shultz was appointed director of corporate sales at Troy State. Shultz, who has served as co-host of a morning sports call-in radio show in Montgomery, Alabama, for the past three years, also will work with the Troy State Radio Network.

Athletic trainers -- Transylvania hired Adam Blair as head athletic trainer ... Agnes Scott tabbed Billie Good as head athletic trainer. Good has spent the past two years as a graduate assistant at Georgia State and the Lovette School in Georgia ... Long Island appointed Danny O'Connor as athletic trainer.

Assistant athletic trainers -- C.W. Post named Fred DeNisco as an assistant trainer ... Jennifer Pipkin was chosen as assistant athletic trainer at Westminster (Missouri). Pipkin fulfilled athletic training duties at Ball State, where she earned a master of science degree in sports management ... Lafayette promoted Dawn Schleiden to associate athletic trainer ... Tracye Rawls-Martin accepted responsibilities as assistant trainer at Long Island ... Lees-McRae hired Ed Livingston as assistant athletic trainer. Broadcast -- Mike Legg was tabbed as director of broadcasting and sales at Western Kentucky. Legg, who also will fulfill play-by-play duties for football and basketball, has been the primary announcer for football and basketball at Southeast Missouri State.

Communications -- Katie Hull was selected as director of athletics public relations at Western Michigan.

Development -- Dwight Merilatt resigned as director of athletics development at West Chester to assume a similar post at Eastern Kentucky ... Towson hired Kurt Mueller as executive director of the Tiger Athletic Fund. Mueller, who has filled the position on an interim basis for nine months, was development coordinator for the Cougar Athletic Foundation at Washington State from 1995 to 2000 ... Jerry Peirson was tabbed as director of athletics development and executive director of the Cardinal Varsity Club at Ball State. Peirson will continue as color analyst for men's basketball on the Ball State Sports Network, a position he has held since 1995 ... Jack Jensen, head men's golf coach at Guilford, was awarded additional responsibilities for the Quaker Club. Jensen, who enters his 26th year as head men's golf coach, closed a 29-season tenure as the school's head men's basketball coach in 1999.

Equipment manager -- Bob Sugar was named as equipment manager at C. W. Post ... Alaska Fairbanks hired Randy Pommenville as equipment manager and ice arena manager for the men's ice hockey squad.

Facilities -- Andrew Coughlin was selected as coordinator of athletics and recreational facilities at Rhode Island College ... Jacksonville appointed Scott Ditmer as facilities director. Recreation -- Joe Santorine was awarded responsibilities as coordinator of recreation services at Bucknell.

Strength and conditioning -- Portland State named Jim Jacobson as strength and conditioning coach ... Todd Gilkey was released as head strength and conditioning coach at Eastern Michigan.

CONFERENCES

The Eastern College Athletic Conference named Bill Fortin as director of soccer training and development.

Kerry Van Malderghem resigned as assistant director of media relations at the Northeast-10 Conference to become assistant director of athletics communications at Colgate. The Northeast-10 Conference selected Ken Belbin as Van Malderghem's successor.

Shane Lyons was hired as assistant commissioner for compliance and governance at the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference hired Wallace Dooley, Jr. as media relations director to replace Lonza Hardy, Jr., who became athletics director at Mississippi Valley State. Dooley has been sports information coordinator at Tennessee State.

Alfred White, commissioner at the Southern Conference, resigned to become president of one of the NBA's National Basketball Development League teams.

Gregg Kaye was added as an assistant commissioner at the Sunshine State Conference. Kaye, who has worked in private business for the last four years, replaces Walter Riddle.

The Atlantic Sun selected Devlin Pierce as assistant commissioner for championships and media relations, succeeding Tom Snyder. Pierce has spent the past four years as director of media relations at Georgia State.

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference named Ellen Zavian as commissioner, succeeding Rich McGlynn. Zavian, who has worked as a sports attorney and agent, will serve as interim chair of the sport management department at George Washington's School of International Institute of Tourism Studies.

Darryl Matus was chosen as administrative assistant for the Sunshine State Conference, succeeding Shawn Chapman. For the past two years, Matus has served as assistant sports information director at Lynn.

DEATHS

Former Villanova basketball player Roscoe Harris died recently of a stab wound to the heart. Harris, who was 28, competed at Villanova from 1992 through 1995 before transferring to Rowan and participating on a Division III national championship team there.

J.J. Jewel, a former Western Kentucky football quarterback, died in an automobile accident July 24. He was 29. Jewel played at Middle Tennessee State then transferred to Western Kentucky where he established a school mark for total offense in a game.

Florida freshman Eraste Autin collapsed and died July 25 after experiencing heat stroke. Autin, slated to play fullback, was 18.
