Thurmond promoted to head men's coach

Matt Thurmond was promoted to head men's golf coach at Washington. Thurmond replaces O.D. Vincent, who resigned to pursue a professional golf career.

For the past year, Thurmond has served as Washington's assistant men's and women's golf coach. Before joining the program at Washington, Thurmond fulfilled assistant coaching responsibilities at Brigham Young during the 1999-00 season.

Thurmond was a four-year letter-winner for the Brigham Young men's golf team from 1993 through 1999. In 1994, Thurmond was named Western Athletic Conference freshman of the year. He also was team captain in 1998 in addition to earning Western Athletic Conference and national scholar-athlete honors.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Jon E. Quistgaard was named as president at Bemidji State. Quistgaard has been vice-president for academic and student affairs at the school ... Bridgewater State President Adrian Tinsley announced retirement plans, effective June 2002 ... Case Western Reserve appointed James W. Wagner as acting president. Wagner serves as provost and vice-president at the school ... Richard S. Millman resigned as president at Knox, effective September 1. Millman will continue at the school as a professor of mathematics.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

St. John's (New York) selected David Wegrzyn as vice-president for university development and athletics, effective July 1. Wegrzyn, who replaces Ed Manetta, has been associate vice-president for alumni relations and development at the school ... Iona named Shawn Brennan as director of athletics, effective July 1 ... Chuck Lindemenn, athletics director at Montana State, announced retirement plans, effective July 1. Lindemenn has guided the program since August 1995 ... Florida Southern elevated Lois Webb to director of athletics, replacing Mike Roberts. Webb was head women's volleyball coach for 24 years and was appointed assistant athletics director in February 2001 ... Mike Karabin was appointed as interim athletics director at Toledo, replacing Pete Liske. Karabin has been serving as senior associate athletics director for external operations ... Charles Cavagnaro announced plans to retire as athletics director at UNLV at the end of the 2001-02 academic year. Cavagnaro has served as athletics director since August 1, 1995.

North Carolina-Asheville named Pat Bryant as associate athletics director for marketing, development and promotions to succeed Jimmy Wilder. For the past five years, Bryant has been an assistant men's basketball coach at the school, and he served as associate head coach during the past season ... St. John's (New York) elevated Kathleen Meehan to associate vice-president of athletics. Meehan has been senior associate athletics director since 1993 ... South Florida hired Michael Kelly as associate athletics director for business development and marketing. Kelly formerly was executive director of the Tampa Bay Super Bowl XXXV Task Force and of the Tampa Bay Final Four Organizing Committee ... Stacey Watts was hired as associate athletics director at Mount Holyoke. Watts has served as administrative intern and assistant field hockey and women's lacrosse coach for three years at William Smith.

Mike Waddell was hired as assistant athletics director for external relations at Akron, replacing Vinny Maculaitis. For the past year and a half, Waddell has been director of marketing and broadcasting at Army ... Capital selected Todd Stepsis as assistant athletics director and football defensive backs coach. For the past two seasons, Stepsis has been an assistant football coach at Otterbein ... Donny Coryell was chosen as assistant athletics director for development at Lamar after serving as development director on an interim basis since last October. Coryell joined the school as director of marketing in September 2000 ... Stetson appointed Bernard Hill as assistant athletics director for compliance ... Mindy Mangels was selected as an assistant athletics director at Wellesley ... Franklin & Marshall's Dave Webster resigned after three years as assistant athletics director and head men's lacrosse coach to become head men's lacrosse coach at Dickinson.

Baseball -- Pat McMahon resigned as head coach at Mississippi State to become head coach at Florida ... Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett announced retirement plans, effective at the end of the 2002 season. Bennett has guided the school to 25 consecutive winning seasons and 17 conference titles in 33 seasons ... Aaron Carroll was hired as head coach at Tennessee Tech. Carroll spent the 2001 season as an interim head coach ... Roanoke added Kelly Dampeer as head coach. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition in 2002. Dampeer has been head coach of the school's club team this year ... Mark O'Brien was hired as head coach at Santa Clara. For the past three years, O'Brien has been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Stanford ... Men's basketball -- Butch Beard was named as head coach at Morgan State, succeeding Chris Fuller. Beard, a former head coach in the NBA, has been an assistant with the NBA's Washington Wizards ... Alabama awarded head coach Mark Gottfried with a four-year contract extension. Last season, Gottfried led the squad to an appearance in the NIT championship game ... Ed Kohtala assumed responsibilities as head coach at Alma ... Tusculum's Mike Hollowell resigned as head coach ... Shippensburg named Dave Springer as head coach ... Duncan, who replaces Stan Rosenthal, has spent the past five years as an assistant with the programs ... Utah selected Brian Appell as head men's and women's coach ... Tom Service was appointed as head women's coach at Santa Clara. Service has been head varsity men's and women's cross country coach at Leland (California) High School.

Field hockey -- Nan Whitley resigned as head coach at Catawba, but will continue as head softball coach.

Field hockey assistant -- Colleen Finnerty accepted duties as an assistant coach at Hofstra.

Fencing -- Doug Galpin was chosen as head coach at Wellesley.

Football -- Buffalo State hired Bob Swank as head coach, succeeding Jerry Boyes. Swank has been assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Methodist.

Football assistants -- Jackson State selected Darrell Asberry as offensive coordinator ... Ron Lambert was added as defensive backs coach at Illinois State. Lambert, who succeeds Steven Wilks, has been secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Eastern Illinois for two seasons ... Indiana State elevated Shannon Jackson to defensive line coach. Jackson has been a graduate assistant coach ... Jamie Barresi was chosen as quarterbacks coach at Central Florida. Barresi, who succeeds Darin Hinshaw, has been an assistant at Wake Forest for eight seasons. The school also appointed Tyson Hinshaw as offensive graduate assistant and Dave Montiel as defensive graduate assistant ... St. Mary's (California) named Ernie Cornella and Jim McDermott as assistants ... Jack Ginn was selected as quarterbacks and receivers coach at Shepherd to replace Brent Baldwin. During his 19-year tenure, Kent has served as assistant coach and as head coach of the program ... Dave Barber was added as head men's coach at Cal State Bakersfield. Barber succeeds Bill Faeth ... Men's and women's ice hockey -- Western New England hired Karl Enroth as head men's coach to replace Mike Badger. Enroth most recently has coached at Amherst, serving as head men's coach during the 1999-00 season and assistant women's coach during the 2000-01 season ... Bemidji State selected Jason Lesterberg as head women's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Brad Dexter was appointed as an assistant men's coach at Clarkson ... Minnesota chose Brad Frost as an assistant women's coach. Frost served as interim assistant coach for the program during the 2000-01 season.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Tammy Dixon was elevated to head women's coach at Greensboro, replacing Mike Lackemacher. Dixon, who served as an assistant coach during the 2001 season, also will work as an assistant women's soccer coach ... Rochester Tech selected Gene Peluso as head men's coach and assistant director for development. Peluso has been head men's and women's coach at Lycoming since 1996 ... Deb Ranieri was chosen as head women's lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach at Susquehanna.

Men's and women's rowing -- Stanford named Craig Amerkhanian as director of rowing. Amerkhanian has been head men's coach since August 2000.

Rochester Tech selected Gene Peluso as head men's coach and assistant director for development. Peluso has been head men's and women's coach at Lycoming since 1996 ... Women's soccer -- Missouri-Rolla hired Diana Niland as head coach. Niland succeeds Dawson Driscoll, who has been head men's and women's coach for three seasons. Driscoll will continue as head men's coach. Niland has been an assistant at Arkansas State ... Don Staley, head coach at Alabama, was awarded a three-year contract extension. Staley has a 72-64-4 record in seven seasons as head coach ... Kevwe Akpore assumed duties as head coach at Knox. Akpore formerly was an assistant with the program ... Duquesne appointed Dawn Crow as head coach, replacing Shelly Saba. Crow has spent the past two seasons as top women's assistant at Alabama.

Women's soccer assistants -- Minnesota named Eric Bell as an assistant coach, succeeding Richard Drake, who became an assistant at Marshall. Softball -- Liz Miller, head coach at Notre Dame, announced her retirement ... Sam Houston State's John Garris resigned as head coach ... Debbie Corbett resigned as head coach at Fordham ... Jennifer Poulsen was hired as head coach at Stephen F. Austin. Poulsen, who succeeds Ruth Wright, has been an assistant at Alabama-Birmingham ... Men's and women's tennis -- Limestone head coach Chris Waters resigned as head tennis and golf coach ... Southeastern Louisiana's Dan Silverstein resigned as head men's and women's coach to assume similar duties at West Virginia ... Tusculum added Tommy Arnett as head men's and women's coach, succeeding Mike Joy, who will continue as head women's soccer coach. For the past two years, Arnett has served as head coach at Newberry ... Florida named Andy Jackson as head men's coach to succeed Ian Duvenhage. Jackson has been head coach at Mississippi State for 13 seasons ... Jim Teal resigned as head women's coach at Saginaw Valley State, effective August 31 ... Virginia Commonwealth head women's coach Eva Bard announced retirement plans, effective July 1. Bard has guided the program to a 167-107 mark in 14 years ... Greensboro's Pat Williams assumed additional duties as head men's coach. Williams also serves as head women's tennis coach.

Men's and women's tennis assistants -- Daryl Greenan was named as an assistant women's coach at Alabama.

Men's and women's track and field -- Wake Forest's Noel Ruebel resigned as head coach ... Ryan Pifer assumed additional duties as head men's and women's coach at Capital. The program will begin competition next year. Pifer is entering his third season as football wide receivers coach ... Lawrence elevated Matt Kehrein to head track coach, succeeding Steve Jung. Kehrein, who has been an assistant track and assistant football coach, will continue to fulfill assistant football coaching duties ... Tim Byers was hired as head men's and women's coach. Byers, who replaces Keith Ellingson, was an assistant track and cross country coach at Wartburg ... Utah appointed Lisa Collet as head women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Kendra Marlowe was named as head coach at Lawrence, replacing Kim Tatro, who will retain responsibilities as head softball coach. Marlowe has been an assistant volleyball and softball coach at Denison ... Elizabeth Herzner was chosen as head women's coach at Sacred Heart ... Rochester Tech appointed Roger Worsley as head women's coach and wellness instructor ... Steve Stratos, head women's coach at Loyola Marymount, signed a contract extension through the 2003 season ... Wheaton (Massachusetts) added Elizabeth Rey as head women's coach to succeed Gina Loudenburg. Rey also will serve as fitness Left director and physical education instructor ... Stacey White was appointed as head coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point to replace Kelly Geiger. White has been head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach at Concordia (Minnesota).

Men's and women's water polo -- Karin Halvorson was hired as head women's coach at Macalester. Halvorson, a 2001 graduate of the school, also will serve as assistant swimming coach and head men's club water polo coach.

Men's and women's water polo assistant -- Matt Anderson was added as an assistant women's coach at Indiana.

Wrestling assistants -- Arizona State named Townsend Saunders as chief assistant and Aaron Simpson as second assistant wrestling coach ... Brian Stapleton and Tom Walsh were chosen as assistant coaches at NYU.

STAFF

Athletic trainers -- Matt Bayley was selected as athletic trainer at Lafayette ... North Carolina-Asheville hired Van Whitmire as head athletic trainer to succeed Jeff Taylor. Whitmire most recently has been interim athletic trainer at the school ... Maureen Mahoney was awarded responsibilities as athletic trainer at Wellesley, effective August 13 ... Rider selected Jennifer Semle as athletic trainer.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Tim Lengle assumed responsibilities as assistant athletic trainer at Rider ... Wheaton (Massachusetts) added Kristin Raffa as an assistant athletic trainer. For the past five years, Raffa has been at Richmond, most recently serving as director of sports medicine.

Compliance -- Jody Sykes was hired as director of compliance and student services at Robert Morris to succeed Tom Olson. Sykes has been compliance assistant for men's athletics at Arkansas.

Development -- Texas A&M's John David Crow announced plans to retire as director of development for athletics. Crow formerly served as associate athletics director and athletics director at the school.

Sports information -- Hiram appointed James Tirotta as sports information director ... Jason Falls was hired as sports information director at Birmingham-Southern. Falls has been director of public relations and new media at Georgetown College ... Jake Keys was selected as sports information director at North Carolina-Greensboro to replace Jeremy Agor. Keys has spent the past four years as assistant sports information director at Marshall ... Rochester Tech named Jamie Joss as sports information director ... Josh Lehman was added as director of sports information and media services at Virginia Commonwealth. For the past three years, Lehman has served as assistant commissioner for communications at the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

Sports information assistants -- Dave Leisering was named as assistant sports information director at Mercyhurst ... Kent State chose Kent Reichert as assistant sports information director, effective July 1. Reichert, who has fulfilled the position on an interim basis for nine months, has worked in the school's sports information office for four years ... Evansville's Jeff Williams resigned after two years as assistant sports information director to accept similar duties at Southwest Missouri State. The school promoted Tom Benson, sports information intern, to assistant sports information director.

Strength and conditioning -- Dean Aresco accepted responsibilities as head strength and conditioning coach at San Diego. Since 1998, Aresco has served as head strength and conditioning coach at Towson.

CONFERENCES

The Big East Conference promoted Barbara Jacobs to assistant commissioner/women's basketball officiating. Jacobs, the current secretary-rules editor for the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Committee, has been working as coordinator of women's basketball officiating/sport administrator.

Dan Schaefer was chosen as coordinator of television operations at the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The Ohio Valley Conference extended Commissioner Dan Beebe's contract through June 30, 2004. Beebe has guided the conference for 12 years. The conference also announced the following as officers for the 2001-02 academic year: Kenneth W. Dobbins, president at Southeast Missouri State, president; Sherry Hoppe, president at Austin Peay State, vice-president.

The Northeast Conference extended the contract of John Iamarino, commissioner, through 2003-04. The conference also elected George R. Houston Jr. as president and Richard Judd as vice-president.

Vicky Chun was appointed as executive director of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association.

John Collins was appointed as director of football and basketball officiating at the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

The Missouri Valley Conference named Don Beggs as chairman of the president's council; Marty Perline as president of the conference and Andi Myers as chairman of athletics administrators.

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference chose Mike Theulen as commissioner.

The American Southwest Conference elected the following as officers of the executive committee for the 2001-02 academic year: Oscar Page, Austin, president; Jerry Bawcom, Mary Hardin-Baylor, vice-president; Rick Niece, Ozarks (Arkansas), past president.

ASSOCIATIONS

Joyce Feinberg resigned after five years as executive director of the Sun Bowl to assume a post in the administration of Ray Caballero, mayor of El Paso, Texas.

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) chose Bill Bradshaw, director of athletics at DePaul, as president for 2001-02. NACDA also elected the following individuals for the 2001-02 term: Joe Castiglione, director of athletics at Oklahoma, first vice-president; Judy Rose, director of athletics at North Carolina-Charlotte, second vice-president; Gene DeFilippo, director of athletics at Boston College, third vice-president; and Tim Gleason, commissioner at the Ohio Athletic Conference, second year of a five-year term as secretary. NACDA selected the following as new executive committee members: University Division representatives -- Mitch Barnhart, athletics director at Oregon State; Tim Curley, athletics director at Penn State; Steve McCarty, athletics director at Stephen F. Austin; Lew Perkins, athletics director at Connecticut; and Terry Don Phillips, athletics director at Oklahoma State. College Division representatives -- Mac Cassell, athletics director at Mount Olive; Bryce Casto, athletics director at West Virginia State; and Wayne Poage, athletics director at Dallas Baptist. CORRECTIONS

The Number Crunching section in the June 18 NCAA News reported that Rhondale Jones of Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) had tied Suleiman Nyambui of the University of Texas at El Paso for the most individual NCAA championships won with 14. Nyambui actually won 15, however, having won seven each in indoor and outdoor track and field, as well as one in cross country.

NAME CHANGES

Lesley College changed its name to Lesley University, effective June 12.

TRYOUT CAMP

The United States Professional Volleyball League will hold its 2001 national athlete tryout camp July 20-22 at Prairie Stone Sports and Wellness Left in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The USPV is a new women's professional indoor volleyball league scheduled to begin competition in February. Teams will be established in Chicago, Illinois; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Rochester, Minnesota; and Saint Louis, Missouri. Four additional cities will be announced at a later date. Registration for the camp is Friday, July 20. Saturday morning will be devoted to athlete testing, and the Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon sessions will focus on athlete skill evaluations. NOTABLES

Nick Gilliam and Candy Hanneman were chosen as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for May. Gilliam, a senior at Florida, and Hanneman, a junior at Duke, won individual medalist honors at the 2001 NCAA championships.

The following have been selected as recipients of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators/Host Communications Marketer of the Year Awards: John Lambert, Buffalo, Division I-A; Curt Krouse, Delaware, Divisions I-AA/I-AAA; Larry Swanson, UC Davis, Divisions II/III.

The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators announced the following as recipients of a $1,000 grant to be used toward postgraduate studies as winners of the 2000-01 NACMA Postgraduate Scholarship Awards: Rachel Burrowbridge, Ashland, Division II; Angela Churchill, Robert Morris, Division I; Lesley Fong, San Diego State, Division I; Ben Lorenzen, Colorado State, Division I; and Jennifer Taylor, Northwood, Division II.

Laura Granville and Matias Boeker were named as Tennis Magazine/Intercollegiate Tennis Association national players of the year. Granville, a sophomore at Stanford, captured the NCAA singles title and helped Stanford win the team championship this year. Boeker, a sophomore at Georgia, became the third player since 1977 to win the singles, doubles and team championships in a season.

Whitney Laiho and Jessica Lehnhoff of Florida and Matias Boeker and Travis Parrott of Georgia were named as Intercollegiate Tennis Association national doubles teams of the year. Each team won doubles titles in NCAA championships this year.

Georgia State's Letha Y. Griffin was named as a recipient of the Presidents Challenge Award presented by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA). The award is given to an individual who has significantly impacted sports medicine and improved the quality of health care in athletics, athletic training and sports medicine. Griffin is a member of the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports.

Central Connecticut State's Carl Krein was inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame, and Cornell athletic trainer Bernie DePalma was one of nine recognized by NATA as Most Distinguished Athletic Trainers. Krein and DePalma formerly were members of the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports.

DEATHS

Jaime Benitez, former chancellor and president at Puerto Rico, died May 30. Benitez was 92.

John McKay, former head football coach and athletics director at Southern California, died June 10 at the age of 77. McKay, the school's winningest head football coach, guided squads to four national championships in addition to working as athletics director from 1972 to 1975. McKay was the first head coach of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Gene Davidson, a broadcaster for Tennessee Tech, died June 2. Davidson, 64, became associated with the school's athletics programs beginning in 1962 with WHUB radio.

Former UNLV football player Kirk Jones died of a heart attack recently. Jones, 36, had been an assistant football and track coach at Long Beach Poly (California) High School since 1997. Jones, second in career rushing yardage at UNLV with 2,656 yards, is one of four players in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season.

Sam Boyd, former football player and coach at Baylor, died recently at the age of 86. Boyd, an all-Southwest Conference wide receiver for the school in the 1930s, served as head coach from 1956 to 1958 and captured a Sugar Bowl win in his first season.

Former Columbia football player Randy Murff died when his F-16 fighter jet crashed in South Korea. Murff, team co-captain in 1996 and two-time second-team all-Ivy League, was a first lieutenant in the Air Force.

Bentley head women's tennis coach Beverly Hansen died of cancer June 19. Hansen, 57, guided the program for two years and earned recognition as Northeast-10 Conference coach of the year in 2000.

Joseph P. McMurray, former president at New Rochelle, Queens (New York) and Queensborough Community College, died May 21. McMurray was 89.
