Kerwick assumes Hobart men's lacrosse post

Hobart has hired Matt Kerwick as head men's lacrosse coach.

For the past three seasons, Kerwick has worked as top men's assistant coach at Georgetown, fulfilling offensive coordinator duties.

Before coming to Georgetown, Kerwick led the lacrosse program at Alfred to a 25-17 mark in three seasons. He also was an assistant coach for one season at Pennsylvania and head coach at Randolph-Macon for three seasons.

Collegiately, Kerwick competed on a Hobart men's lacrosse team that won four NCAA Division III national championships. He also was a four-time letter-winner for the men's ice hockey team. During his senior year, Kerwick served as captain of both squads. The 1990 graduate of Hobart played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1991 to 1996.

Charles H. Karelis resigned as president at Colgate, effective July 31. The school announced Jane L. Pinchin, dean of the faculty, provost and English professor, as interim president ... Hardin-Simmons appointed W. Craig Turner as president. Turner has been executive vice-president and chief operating officer at the school ... Leo I. Higdon Jr. was appointed as president at College of Charleston, effective October 2001. Higdon succeeds Alexander M. Sanders Jr., who is retiring.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Georgia Southwestern chose Randolph Barksdale as athletics director ... Mike Hamrick, director of athletics at East Carolina, was awarded a contract extension through May 31, 2005 ... West Alabama's Dee Outlaw has changed plans to retire as athletics director and will remain in the position. Outlaw has served as athletics director since 1994 ... Al Bohl was hired as athletics director at Kansas. Bohl, who has been director of athletics at Fresno State, succeeds Bob Frederick. Fresno State appointed Scott Johnson as interim athletics director to succeed Bohl. Johnson has been associate athletics director at the school for the past five years ... Millersville selected Doreen M. McAfee as director of women's athletics. McAfee, who most recently has been athletics director at Wingate, replaces the retired Marjorie A. Trout ... American athletics director Dan Radakovich resigned to join the athletics department at LSU ... Montana State selected Glenn Lewis as interim athletics director. Lewis has been with the school since 1967 and has served as director of auxiliary services since 1969.

Judy Southard was named as senior woman administrator and associate athletics director at LSU. For the past nine years, Southard has been the athletics director at Texas Woman's ... Myndee Larsen was hired as senior woman administrator/compliance coordinator at Southern Utah. For the past three years, Larsen has worked as an assistant women's basketball coach at the school ... Calli Sanders resigned as associate athletics director, compliance officer and senior woman administrator at Montana State to become dean of students at Maine.

North Carolina-Greensboro's Ty Buckner resigned as associate athletics director for public affairs to become director of college relations at Guilford ... Bill Givens was appointed associate athletics director at Southern Utah. Givens has served as the director of the Montagne Center at Lamar.

Dwight Merilatt was selected as assistant athletics director for development at Eastern Kentucky. For the past three years, Merilatt has fulfilled the same duties at West Chester ... Cal State Fullerton named Steve DiTolla as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions. DiTolla, who formerly was associate athletics director for business affairs with the school, has been vice-president of sales for a sports apparel store for eight years ... Steve Malchow was elevated to assistant athletics director for communications at Wisconsin. Malchow has been director of men's sports information ... Clark promoted Paul Phillips and Karen Chambers to assistant athletics directors. Phillips has been head men's basketball coach for five years and will retain head coaching responsibilities. Chambers has served as head women's volleyball coach and sports information director for two years and will retain head coaching duties ... Baseball -- Jay Eckhouse, an assistant football coach at Illinois College, assumed additional duties as head baseball coach. Eckhouse will serve as football offensive backs coach this season ... Becker chose Walter Beede as head coach ... St. Peter's named Jimmy Walsh as head coach ... Rudy Stoehr was selected as head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan ... Miami (Florida) signed head coach Jim Morris to a contract extension through the 2006 season. Morris, who has been head coach for eight seasons, has led the program to two national titles in the last three years ... Joe Vavra resigned as head coach at Wisconsin-Stout to become assistant to the general manager of MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers. Vavra has guided the squad since May 2000.

Baseball assistants -- Mike Trahan was elevated to assistant coach at McNeese State ... Citadel chose David Beckley as an assistant ... Rick Clagett was appointed as an assistant coach at Villanova ... Washington hired Travis Jewett as an assistant coach. For the past three seasons, Jewett has been an assistant at Gonzaga ... Matt Barnett was selected as an assistant at Belmont. Barnett, who most recently has been pitching coach at Tennessee Tech, succeeds Todd Hollowell ... Men's basketball -- Jim Larranaga agreed to a six-year contract to continue as head coach at George Mason through the 2006-07 season. During his four-year tenure, Larranaga has guided the school to two Colonial Athletic Association championships and two NCAA tournament appearances ... Wisconsin-Whitewater head coach Dave Vander Meulen announced retirement plans. Vander Meulen compiled a 440-182 mark and captured two NCAA Division III national championships in 23 years. The school appointed Pat Miller, an assistant coach since 1993-94, as interim head coach. Miller also has served as head women's golf coach since the 1994-95 season ... Ryan Marks was hired as head men's basketball and head baseball coach at Southern Vermont. Marks, who replaces Robert Nugent, has been an assistant basketball coach at Northern Illinois since 1995 ... Georgia Tech awarded head coach Paul Hewitt a five-year contract. Last season was Hewitt's first as head coach ... Dave Magarity, head coach at Marist, signed a four-year contract through the 2004-05 season.

Men's and women's fencing -- Vassar chose Heather Whitefield as head men's and women's coach.

Field hockey -- Ball State appointed Jen Halliday as head coach.

Field hockey assistant -- Amara Thornton-Brown accepted the assistant coaching post at Marywood.

Football assistants -- Tommy Condell assumed duties as tight ends and special teams coach at Louisiana-Monroe. Condell has been wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator at Stephen F. Austin ... Michael Cerasuolo assumed responsibilities as offensive coordinator at Springfield. Cerasuolo spent the 2000 season as offensive coordinator at Mansfield ... Brian Watts was named as head men's coach at Oregon State to replace Mike Ketcham. Watts has been an assistant men's and women's coach with the program for two years.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- New England appointed Scott Borek as head men's coach. For the past five seasons, Borek has served as head coach at Lake Superior State.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Bert Gilling was chosen as an assistant men's coach at Bemidji State.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe was named as head women's coach at Hofstra ... New England's Mimi Mills resigned as head women's coach ... Western New England hired John Klepacki as head men's coach. For the past two seasons, Klepacki has served as an assistant at Springfield ... Softball -- Tara Laposa was appointed as head coach at New Jersey City, succeeding David Salvatore, who resigned ... Cal State Hayward selected Cara Hoyt as head coach for the 2002 season ... Santa Barbara chose Kristy Schroeder as head coach. Schroeder closes a three-season tenure as head coach at Truman State with a 133-34-1 record ... Men's and women's tennis assistants -- South Alabama appointed Tomas Catar as an assistant women's coach ... North Carolina-Greensboro hired Michaela Quinn as an assistant coach. Quinn competed on the school's team from 1996 to 2000 and spent the fall 2000 season as a student assistant coach ... Celeste Frey assumed duties as an assistant women's coach at Massachusetts.

Men's and women's track and field -- Illinois College appointed Mike Brooks as head track coach. Brooks also has been an assistant football coach with the school since 1999 and will fulfill offensive coordinator duties this season. ... Ralph White was named as head men's and women's coach at Williams to replace Peter Farwell, who will continue as head men's and women's cross country coach and assistant track and field coach. White was an assistant men's and women's track and field and cross country coach at the school last year ... North Carolina A&T's Tonya McKelvey-White resigned as head women's coach. The school announced head men's coach Roy Thompson will assume additional duties as head women's coach and become director of track and field operations.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Jennifer "Jay" Hartshorn and Allen Bradd were added as assistant men's and women's track and field and cross country coaches at Syracuse. Hartshorn has been an assistant at Smith, and Bradd was men's and women's throws coach at Murray State.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Goucher selected Meredith Nash as head coach ... Jon Teetzel was hired as head women's coach at Valdosta State. Last season, Teetzel was head coach at Frostburg State ... Rochester Institute of Technology named Roger Worsely as head women's coach and wellness instructor. For the past year, Worsley has been an assistant women's coach at Hawaii ... Don Shaw was chosen as head men's coach at Stanford, replacing Ruben Nieves. Shaw has spent the past 16 years as head women's coach at the school ... Millersville chose Scott Pennewill as head women's coach ... St. Mary's (Maryland) selected Kelly Sampson as head coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Julie Miller assumed duties as an assistant women's coach at Penn State ... Furman named Travis Filar as an assistant women's coach ... Rob Thomas was added as an assistant at South Alabama. For the past three years, Thomas has worked as an assistant at Memphis ... Elon hired Fiona MacPherson as an assistant coach ... Will Donohoe was awarded additional responsibilities as assistant coach at Marywood. Donohoe also serves as director of sports information and athletics promotions ... Academic services assistant -- Tiffany McCoy was chosen as a graduate assistant for academic advising for student-athletes at Akron.

Administrative -- Wisconsin tabbed Tamara Flarup as director of Web site services ... Deryk Gilmore was named as coordinator of student-athlete retention and development at Oregon. Gilmore has spent the past seven years at Illinois, most recently working as director of football operations.

Athletic trainers -- Michael Aed was hired as head athletic trainer at Marywood.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Kate Rasmussen and Brooke Andrews were added as athletic training assistants at Colgate. Rasmussen, a 2000 graduate of Alfred, has been working at Genesee Regional Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. Andrews is a 2001 graduate of Ithaca, where she was a student athletic trainer ... Marywood added Nicol Walker as an assistant athletic trainer ... Neal Barton was appointed as assistant athletic trainer at Towson. Barton, who has served on the athletic training staff at Washington for three years, succeeds Miguel Rueda.

Broadcasting -- Dave Hunziker was hired as football and basketball play-by-play announcer at Oklahoma State. Hunziker, who succeeds the late Bill Teegins, has been the radio voice for Western Kentucky football and basketball since July 2000, in addition to serving as director of athletics broadcasting and corporate sales at the school.

Compliance assistant -- Villanova named Kerri Cebula as an assistant coordinator for compliance

Marketing/promotions -- Dan Hawley was chosen as marketing and promotions director at Montana, succeeding Christie Clark. Hawley has been assistant director of marketing at Wyoming.

Marketing/promotions assistants -- Villanova named Boe Weiseman as assistant coordinator for promotions and special events.

Operations assistant -- Ryan Steger assumed responsibilities as assistant operations manager at Belmont. Steger was an operations intern with the school during the spring of 2001.

Sports information -- David Pratt was appointed as sports information director at Centenary ... Wisconsin named Justin Doherty as director of sports information ... Ira Thor was named as director of sports information at New Jersey City ... Marietta awarded Nicole Peloquin with responsibilities as sports information director. Peloquin spent the 2000-01 school year as an intern in the school's sports information office ... Jim Duzyk was hired as sports information director at Robert Morris, succeeding Marty Galosi, who was named assistant athletics director for marketing and sales at the school ... Rochester Institute of Technology announced Jamie Joss as sports information director. Joss has been assistant director of athletics communications at Colgate for the last two years ... Eric McDowell was added as sports information director at Brockport State.

Sports information assistant -- Jim Rea was hired as assistant sports information director at Bradley. Rea, a 2000 graduate of Creighton, most recently has been a graduate assistant in the media relations office at Illinois State.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Elon chose Toby Jacobi as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

CONFERENCES

The Peach Belt Conference announced the following as officers: Anne H. Hopkins, North Florida, conference president; Allen C. Meadors, North Carolina-Pembroke, president-elect; Thomas Hallman, South Carolina-Aiken, vice-president.

Kevin Weiberg, commissioner of the Big 12 Conference, signed a five-year contract extension through June 2006.

The Patriot League hired Kris Petersen as assistant media relations director and Ryan Eklund as administrative intern. Petersen has been a communications assistant at the Big East Conference, and Eklund has been a compliance intern at Connecticut.

The following have been chosen as members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference board of directors: William E. Troutt, president at Rhodes, chair of the board of directors; Larry D. Large, president at Oglethorpe; Samuel F. Hulbert, president at Rose-Hulman. The conference also announced Mike Clary, athletics director at Rhodes, as chair of the conference's Athletics Directors Council.

Tom Snyder resigned as assistant commissioner at the Atlantic Sun Conference, effective July 18, to assume responsibilities with the communications department at Marriott Vacation Club International. Snyder has been with the conference since September 1994.

The Mid-Continent Conference elevated Tony Hamilton to director of media relations. Hamilton, who replaces Nancy Smith, has fulfilled the duties on an interim basis since April.

The following were elected as members of the Lone Star Conference's executive committee for the 2001-02 academic year: James Hindman, Angelo State, chair; Glen Johnson, Southeastern Oklahoma State, vice-chair; Keith McFarland, Texas A&M-Commerce, second vice-chair; Larry Williams, Northeastern State, third vice-chair.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Kerri Fagan and Keanah Smith were hired as assistant directors of championships at the national office. Fagan has been an assistant director of athletics at Indiana State, and Smith has served as an assistant director of championships at Conference USA.

CORRECTION

Photos of two St. John's (New York) fencers were reversed in the Championships Year in Review insert in the July 2 issue of The NCAA News. The caption identifies men's sabre champion Ivan Lee as being on the left. The left-hand photo actually is of teammate Keeth Smart.

DEATHS

Former Akron baseball player Steve Hatch died of pancreatic cancer on June 19. Hatch, 51, served as captain of the school's 1972 baseball team.

David Wells, former athletics administrator and coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, died of cancer recently. He was 49. Wells served as athletics director from 1995 to October 2000 and was head men's basketball coach for 25 years.

South Florida student-athlete Patrick Payton died recently when an automobile struck the motorcycle he was riding. Payton, 19, was a redshirt freshman on the school's football team.

Clay Gould, head baseball coach at Texas-Arlington, died from colon cancer. He was 29. Gould had guided the program since June 1999.
