Slagle resigns as Davidson soccer coach

Charlie Slagle resigned as head men's soccer at Davidson, closing a 21-year tenure. Slagle will assume responsibilities as CEO of the Capital Area Soccer League.

Since becoming head coach at the school in 1980, Slagle compiled a career record of 209-202-31. He led the squad to an appearance in the Division I Men's College Cup in 1992. That same year, Slagle was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) coach of the year. The seven-time Southern Conference coach of the year has served as a member of the NCAA Men's and Women's Soccer Rules Committee, and as chairman of the Division I coaches for the NSCAA.

A 1975 graduate of Davidson, Slagle competed on the men's soccer team as a goalkeeper, earning second-team all-Southern Conference recognition.

Owen F. Cargol was selected as president at Northern Arizona. Cargol has been president at University of Maine at Augusta ... Lattie F. Coor announced retirement plans as president at Arizona State, effective June 30, 2002 ... Duquesne appointed Charles J. Dougherty as president. Dougherty has been vice-president for academic affairs at Creighton ... Steven G. Gamble was named as president at Eastern New Mexico, effective August 1. Gamble has been serving as president at Southern Arkansas ... Belmont Abbey named James L. Gearity as president. Most recently, Gearity has worked as provost and professor of history at Our Lady of the Lake University ... Nevada named John Lilley as president, effective July 1. Lilley has been provost at Penn State-Behrend ... Joseph H. Hagan resigned as president at Roger Williams.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Alvernia's Adam Hertz resigned as athletics director ... Louisiana-Monroe appointed Bruce Hanks as athletics director. Hanks has filled the role on an interim basis for the past three months ... Doug Neibuhr was chosen as athletics director at Millikin to replace Lori Kerans. Neibuhr has served as head football coach at the school since 1996 and has been director of athletics development and marketing since 1999 ... Tennessee State released James Smith as athletics director after 21 months. The school appointed Teresa Lawrence Phillips, associate athletics director, as interim athletics director ... Anne Little resigned as athletics director at Winston-Salem State ... Lebanon Valley's Lou Sorrentino resigned as athletics director. Sorrentino, who will continue as head golf coach, has been athletics director since 1981. The school selected Kathy Tierney as Sorrentino's successor. Tierney, who has been associate athletics director since 1995, will retire as the school's head field hockey coach ... Doreen McAfee resigned as athletics director at Wingate. The school announced the position of athletics director will be dissolved and replaced by the new position of vice-president for student affairs, which will be responsible for all athletics and student development functions. Steve Poston has been appointed to fulfill the vice-presidential post.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Georgia Tech elevated Mary McElroy to senior woman administrator and associate athletics director to replace Kathy Noble. McElroy has been compliance director for two years and assistant athletics director since August 2000.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

Scott A. Gordon was named as faculty athletics representative at Southern Indiana. Gordon is an associate professor of biology at the school.

Bucknell's Rose Ewan resigned as associate director of athletics for recreation services, effective June 30. Ewan, who has been a member of the athletics department since 1978, will continue as a consultant to the department ... Penn State awarded additional duties to John Powell as associate athletics director for marketing and development, effective August 1. Powell has been director of athletics development since April 1999 ... Jacksonville's Mike Bazemore resigned as associate athletics director to assume similar responsibilities at Central Florida ... North Carolina-Asheville chose Pat Bryant as associate athletics director for marketing, development and promotions.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Matt Grimaldi was named as assistant director of athletics and compliance officer at Mercyhurst ... Rick Beard and Peg Kauffman were elevated to assistant athletics directors at Lebanon Valley. Beard will continue as director of the Arnold Sports Center and Kauffman will retain responsibilities as head women's basketball coach ... Jeff Nelson, sports information director at Penn State since October 1993, assumed additional duties as assistant athletics director for communications, effective August 1 ... Miami (Ohio) sports information director Mike Wolf resigned to become assistant athletics director for athletics media services at Northwestern ... Rollins promoted Dean Hybl to assistant director of athletics for communications. Since August 1996, Hybl has been sports information director ... Colby-Sawyer promoted George Martin and Adam S. Kamras to assistant athletics directors. Martin will continue as head women's basketball coach, but will relinquish duties as head women's volleyball coach. Kamras will retain responsibilities as sports information director ... Kevin Porter was hired as assistant athletics director for compliance at Akron to replace George Van Horne. Porter has worked at Northeastern for the past five and a half years, including the last three as assistant athletics director for compliance ... Wisconsin chose Steve Malchow as assistant athletics director for communications. Since 1990, Malchow has been director of men's sports information at the school ... Larry New was promoted to assistant athletics director at Georgia Tech. For the past three years, New has served as director of the school's Homer Rice Center for Sports Performance, a position he will retain.

Baseball -- Hawaii hired Mike Trapasso as head coach to succeed the retired Les Murakami. Trapasso has been an assistant at Georgia Tech for the past seven seasons ... Mike Wing was selected as head coach at LeTourneau ... Southern Connecticut State's Joe Bandiera announced plans to retire as head coach. Bandiera joined the school in 1969 as an assistant football and assistant baseball coach and has been head coach since 1976 ... Dan Gooley assumed duties as head coach at Quinnipiac to replace Joe Mattei. Gooley, who formerly was head coach of the program from 1977 through 1987, has been director of athletics development at the school ... Florida released head coach Andy Lopez ... Greg McVey was hired as head coach at Quincy, replacing Pat Atwell. McVey has served as head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan for two seasons ... Jamie Sailors was chosen as head baseball and football defensive coordinator at Wisconsin-Platteville. Last season, Sailors coached at Harrison (Indiana) High School.

Baseball assistants -- Jorge Hernandez was selected as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. For the past eight years, Hernandez has been an assistant at the University of Mobile ... Bob Shepherd was named as associate head coach at Jacksonville. Shepherd has been the top assistant with the program since 1999 ... Chad Tesh assumed duties as an assistant coach at Guilford.

Men's basketball -- Dean Demopoulos resigned as head coach at Missouri-Kansas City. The school elevated Rich Zvosec, associate head coach during the 2000-01 season, to head coach ... Gary Close was named as head coach at Massachusetts-Lowell ... West Virginia Tech's Jeff Kepreos resigned as head coach ... Ken Carrillo was elevated to head coach at Saint Joseph's (Indiana) to replace Dave Balza, who became head coach at Florida Gulf Coast. Carrillo has worked as an assistant with the program for the past three seasons ... Joe Callero was hired as head coach at Seattle. For the past two seasons, Callero has served as head coach at Puget Sound ... Transylvania chose Brian Lane as head coach to succeed his father, Don Lane, who retired. Brian Lane has been an assistant at Morehead State for three years ... Morningside added Bob Bargen as head coach. Bargen, who has been an assistant at Nebraska Wesleyan for eight seasons, succeeds Troy Larsen ... Pat Douglass was awarded a four-year contract extension as head coach at UC Irvine. Seton Hall chose George Jackson as basketball administrative assistant and Lori Perillo as director of basketball operations. Jackson has been head boys' basketball coach at Withrow (Ohio) High School for 22 years and Perillo has served as academic advisor, assistant compliance officer and assistant women's soccer coach at Siena ... UCLA hired Gerald Madkins as an assistant coach. Madkins, who succeeds Michael Holton, has been an assistant at Cal State Stanislaus ... The school chose associate head coach Mary Taylor Cowles as interim head coach ... Wright State selected Bridgett Williams as head coach to replace Lisa Fitch. Williams has been head coach at Chicago State ... Connie Guinn resigned as head coach at Alabama-Huntsville ... Colgate appointed Beth Spycher as head coach ... Reagan Rossi was appointed as head coach at Albertson. Rossi, who replaces Todd Corman, has served as an assistant at Morehead State ... Loyola (Maryland) hired Candy Cage as head coach. The school also announced Deborah Perry and Lisa Griffey were chosen as assistants ... Maggie Dixon was promoted to assistant coach at DePaul after serving as director of basketball operations ... The program is scheduled to begin competition in the fall of 2001. Lincoln also is head women's basketball coach and sports information director.

Field hockey -- Lebanon Valley promoted Laurel Martin to head coach to succeed Kathy Tierney. Martin served as an assistant with the program during the 2000 season ... Denise Junkerman was named as head coach at Philadelphia.

Football -- Waynesburg selected Jeff Hand as head coach.

Football assistants -- Greensboro elevated Bill Young to defensive coordinator to replace Rick Larrick. During the 2000 season, Young was defensive secondary and special teams coach ... Mike Dietzel was hired as defensive backs coach at Kent State. Most recently, Dietzel has been an assistant coach with the XFL's New York/New Jersey Hitmen ... Northern Illinois hired George McDonald as wide receivers coach, succeeding Sidney McNairy. Most recently, McDonald has been wide receivers coach at Bucknell ... Ed Hogya and Frank Little were added as assistants at Kenyon. Hogya, who was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for one season at Kean, will serve as offensive coordinator. Little, who was offensive line coach at Denison for four seasons, will work as offensive line coach ... Lebanon Valley selected Joe Trezza as running backs coach ... Jacksonville named Edward Stults as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach to succeed Greg Boyce. Elliott, who succeeds Stacy Searels, has been an assistant with the program for four seasons, most recently fulfilling duties as tight ends coach. The school also announced Chris Moore will coach linebackers and Dale Jones will serve as recruiting coordinator ... Wisconsin-Platteville promoted Ulz Daeuber to offensive assistant coach. Men's and women's golf -- Texas A&M named J.T. Higgins as head men's coach ... Felicia Johnston was named as head men's and women's coach at Portland State ... Portland selected Paul Hanson as head men's coach and Bill Winter as head women's coach ... Adams State added Bryce Bervig as head coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Kristin Steele assumed responsibilities as head women's coach at Connecticut College.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Brendan Blakeley resigned as head women's coach at UC Davis ... Lehigh head men's coach John McCloskey resigned ... Quinnipiac announced the resignation of head coach Tim Price. Price guided the program to a 32-26 record in four years ... Mike Lackemacher resigned after three seasons as head women's coach at Greensboro.

Men's and women's rowing assistant -- UC Davis selected Carissa Adams as an assistant women's coach.

Men's soccer -- Mike Kersker was awarded head men's coaching duties at Salem State. From 1996 to 2000, Kersker was head coach at Endicott.

Women's soccer -- Duke's Bill Hempen resigned after 13 seasons as head coach to become head coach at Colorado. Hempen succeeds Austin Daniels ... Kevin Cross was promoted to head coach at UTEP after serving as an assistant with the program for four years ... Karen Parker resigned as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Wisconsin ... Jim Nestor was chosen as head women's soccer and head women's lacrosse coach at Salisbury State. Since 1995, Nestor has fulfilled responsibilities as head women's soccer and head women's lacrosse coach at Gannon ... Nebraska Wesleyan's Brett Rosenberger resigned as head coach to become an assistant at Arkansas State.

Women's soccer assistants -- R.J. Anderson and Becca Lief were added as assistant coaches at Baylor ... NYU selected Lara Applegate as an assistant coach.

Softball -- Ohio Northern named Jeff Nickerson as head coach ... Marcie Hickey was hired as head coach at Coppin State, succeeding Billie Wilson. Hickey has been an assistant coach at Rhode Island for the past two seasons ... Cal State Northridge announced the retirement of head coach Janet Sherman ... Erika Swanson was appointed as head coach at West Georgia ... Gina Chambers resigned as head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan ... Georgia Southern hired Natalie Poole as head coach. Poole, who succeeds Kelley Kirkland, has been an assistant at McNeese State for three years.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Franklin and Marshall appointed Bob Rueppel as head men's and women's coach and aquatics director. Rueppel, who has spent the past six years as head coach at Wittenberg, replaces Steve Fletcher.

Men's and women's tennis -- Brian Perry was chosen as head tennis and cross country coach at Newberry ... Towson selected Peter Walten as head women's coach to succeed Jacquelyn Bunting. Walten has been boys' head coach at Susquehannock (Pennsylvania) High School for two years ... Capital head men's coach Scott Welsh resigned after six seasons. The school named Doug DiRosario, a 2001 Capital graduate and former Capital men's tennis player, as Welsh's successor ... Virginia's Dick Stockton resigned as men's coach ... Andy Brandi resigned as head women's coach at Florida, effective June 3, to become director of coaching at IMG Academies ... John Carroll's Toby Perry retired after seven seasons. During his tenure, Perry captured three Ohio Athletic Conference championships ... Birmingham Southern elevated assistant men's and women's coach Brian Rahaley to head men's coach. Rahaley takes over for Ann Dielen, who has been head men's and women's coach for 24 years. Dielen will continue as head women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Diane Russo resigned as head women's coach at Western Michigan ... Jim Nickasch replaces Merle Johnson as head coach at Wisconsin-Platteville.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Texas' John Rembao resigned as an assistant women's track and field and cross country coach, effective August 31 ... Tim Byers was hired as head men's and women's coach at Simpson, succeeding Keith Ellingson, who resigned after 15 years. Most recently, Byers has been an assistant track and cross country coach at Wartburg.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Wayne Sombric was named as head women's coach at Eastern Connecticut State ... Trinity (Connecticut) tabbed Angela Mills as head coach ... Lynn Hall was selected as successor to Dorinda Von Tersch as head coach at Colgate. Hall has been head coach at UC Santa Cruz ... Steve Coulson, head women's coach at Franklin and Marshall, resigned. Coulson guided the program from 1986 to 1989 and from 1993 to 2001 ... Becky Thyhsen was elevated to head coach to succeed Janiece Holder. Thyhsen has served as an assistant with the program since January.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Texas appointed Christy Cochran as an assistant women's coach ... Terri Cox assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Texas Tech ... Texas A&M-Corpus Christi named Joe Goble as an assistant to replace John Schmidt. For the past two years, Goble has coached at Hazelwood West (Missouri) High School ... Nicole Roethig was hired as an assistant at South Dakota State. For the past two seasons, Roethig has been a graduate assistant at Winona State.

Men's and women's water polo -- Siena named Alan Huckins and Ken McLaughlin as head women's coaches. The program will become a varsity sport next year.

STAFF

Administrative -- Cleveland McCray was hired as assistant to the athletics director for student-athlete support at Lehigh.

Athletic trainers -- Nebraska Wesleyan added Paul Westerberg as head athletic trainer, effective August 1, replacing Tom Monagan, who will assume athletic training duties with one of MLB's Pittsburgh Pirates' minor league teams. Westerberg has most recently been a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Nebraska-Omaha ... Scott Soja, an assistant athletic trainer at Wisconsin-Platteville since 2000, was elevated to head athletic trainer. Soja has fulfilled head trainer duties on an interim basis since January, replaces Mike LaMere.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Indiana chose Chris Antinori as assistant football trainer ... Craig Biwer was named as assistant athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach. Most recently, Biwer was a graduate assistant at Northern Michigan.

Communications -- Cornell named Laura Stange as director of athletics communications ... Marc Gignac was hired as director of athletics communications at Canisius. Gignac spent the past year as assistant sports information director at George Mason.

Communications assistants -- Canisius elevated Steven J. Rudnicki to assistant director of athletics communications ... Pete Moore was promoted to associate director of athletics communications at Syracuse. Moore joined Syracuse as assistant director of athletics communications in 1998.

Compliance -- Alan R. Witbeck announced plans to retire as compliance officer at Brigham Young, effective September 1 ... Jennifer Condaras was promoted to director of compliance at Georgia Tech. For the past two years, Condaras has been assistant director.

Compliance assistant -- Georgia Tech named Monique Holland as assistant compliance director. Holland also serves as an assistant women's basketball coach at the school.

Development -- Bucknell's Jim Campbell resigned as director of the Bison Club, effective June 30. Campbell has held the position for 11 years. The school elevated Todd Newcomb to associate director of athletics for external relations/director of the Bison Club as Campbell's successor.

Event management -- Georgia chose Matt Brachowski as director of event management.

Marketing/promotions -- California chose David Kaufer as director of marketing and promotions ... Brett Saddoris assumed duties as assistant director of marketing at Illinois State.

Sports information assistants -- Rocco Gasparro was awarded duties as assistant sports information director at Dartmouth ... Hartford selected Mike Antonaccio as assistant sports information director. Antonaccio, who replaces Tom Machamer, has been a sports information intern at Holy Cross.

Strength and conditioning -- Al Johnson was appointed as strength and conditioning coach for football at Ohio State. Most recently, Johnson has been filfulling responsibilities as director of strength and conditioning at West Virginia.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Amie Stiener resigned as research coordinator at the national office.

CONFERENCES

The Atlantic 10 Conference elevated Kathleen Cloran to assistant commissioner for championships ... Richard J. Ensor, commissioner at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, was awarded a contract extension through June 30, 2004. The league also promoted Ken Taylor to director of championships, effective June 16. Taylor has served as director of ice hockey and special events since July 2000. Julie Byron was appointed as director of special events at the conference, effective June 18. Byron has been director of marketing for MAAC Properties.

Keith Grant resigned as assistant commissioner at the Northeast Conference, effective June 15.

The Big East Conference hired Melanie Burkett and Joshua Waldman as communications assistants for the 2001-02 academic year. Burkett is a 2001 graduate of Duke and Waldman is a 2001 graduate of Syracuse.

CORRECTIONS

In the women's basketball attendance report published in the June 4 issue of The NCAA News, Baylor was inadvertently omitted from the national rankings. The Lady Bears ranked 23rd nationally, averaging 3,959 fans per game (14 home games for a 55,419 total).

An item in the NCAA Record section of the June 4 NCAA News incorrectly portrayed Ann Die's status with the Division III Presidents Council. Die's term on the Division III Presidents Council and the NCAA Executive Committee concluded in January. Die recently announced her plans to retire as president of Hendrix College.

The Division II Men's Golf Championships individual results in the June 4 NCAA News incorrectly listed medalist Steve Sokol of Florida Southern as having shot a four-round total of 283. Sokol's total was 286, which tied him with Kevin Warrick of West Florida and Mark Lawless of Cal State Stanislaus for first place. Sokol won medalist honors in a playoff.

In the June 4 NCAA Record, James P. Gallagher was incorrectly named as the new president at Duquesne. Gallagher is the president at Philadelphia U.

Two NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients published in the May 7 issue of The NCAA News were listed incorrectly as Divisions II and III recipients. Brian Sell and Michael Green, cross country standouts from St. Francis (Pennsylvania) and Troy State, respectively, are Division I recipients.

In the Number Crunching section on page 3 of the May 21 NCAA News, it was incorrectly reported that Coker College's women's softball team had established a Division II record by winning its 41st consecutive game. The team actually won 37 straight, three short of Kennesaw State's 40 consecutive wins in 1995.

The school where Jamy Bechler formerly coached was incorrectly printed in the June 4 NCAA Record. Bechler, who was recently appointed head women's basketball coach at LeTourneau, formerly coached at Anderson (Indiana).

NAME CHANGES

New Hampshire College will change its name to Southern New Hampshire University, effective July 1, 2001. Beaver College will change its name to Arcadia University, effective July 16, 2001. William Penn College announced it will leave the NCAA and become a member of the NAIA.

NOTABLES

Jessica Martin, a senior swimming student-athlete at Truman State, was chosen as the Honda Award winner as NCAA Division II collegiate woman athlete of the year. Martin helped Truman State capture a national championship this year by winning four individual events and contributing to two relays.

Brenda Taylor, a senior track student-athlete at Harvard, was named as a Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport for 2000-01. Taylor captured the 2001 national title in the 400 hurdles.

Washington (Missouri) senior basketball player Tasha Rodgers was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the NCAA Division III collegiate woman athlete of the year. Rodgers, who helped guide the school to its fourth straight NCAA Division III national championship, was named the most outstanding player of the Division III tournament.

The following have been selected as NCAA Division II National Golf Coaches Association 2000-01 award recipients: NGCA Regional Coaches of the Year -- Robbie Davis, Florida Southern, South region; Cindy Ho, Longwood, and Brad Bedortha, Ferris State, East region (co-winners); Jack Maughan, Northern Colorado, North region; Kent Beatty, Western New Mexico, West region. NGCA National Coach of the Year -- Cindy Ho, Longwood. NGCA Freshman of the Year (sponsored by Softspikes) -- Rachel Bell, Florida Southern and Ellen Berg, Longwood. NGCA Player of the Year -- Rachel Bell, Florida Southern.

Carl McGown, head coach at Brigham Young, was named as the 2001 Tachikara/American Volleyball Coaches Association men's national coach of the year. McGown, who also was recognized as Mountain Pacific Federation coach of the year, guided his squad to it's second national championship in 2001.

Arizona's Jennie Finch was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate softball athlete for 2000-01. The junior pitcher completed a 32-0 season and helped Arizona capture the 2001 national championship. She also was named the tournament's most outstanding player.

Jen Adams, a senior at Maryland, was chosen for the second straight year as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in the sport of women's lacrosse for 2000-01. This season, Adams, the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, helped Maryland win the national championship and broke her own NCAA single-season scoring record with 148 points.

Duke's Candy Hannemann was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in the sport of golf for 2000-01. Hannemann, a junior, won the NCAA individual golf championship and also was named 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year.

DEATHS

Penny Lewis, an assistant women's basketball coach at Lamar, died recently in a hiking accident. Lewis had been an assistant with the program for four years.

Former Florida head football coach Charley Pell died of cancer. Pell, 60, led the Florida program from 1979 to 1984.

Jesse N. Stone Jr., former president at Southern, died May 14. He was 76.
