Minnesota State-Mankato hires Vizenor

Jeff Vizenor has been appointed as head< women's ice hockey coach at Minnesota State-Mankato.

Last season, Vizenor fulfilled assistant coaching responsibilities at Wisconsin. Before joining the program at Wisconsin, he was head coach at Saint Mary's (Minnesota). In two seasons there, Vizenor amassed a 34-13-5 record and captured two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championships. He also was awarded conference coach of the year honors in 1998-99. Additionally, Vizenor has served as an assistant boys' coach and a head girls' coach at the high-school level.

Vizenor is a 1992 graduate of St. Cloud State with a bachelor of science degree in social studies education.

Auston resigned as president at Case Western Reserve ... Clark Atlanta President Thomas W. Cole Jr. announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2002 ... Ralph J. Bob Frederick resigned as athletics director at Kansas, effective June 30. Frederick, who has been athletics director for 14 years, will continue with the school as a professor in the school of education ... California named Stephen Gladstone as athletics director ... Hank Small assumed responsibilities as athletics director at Charleston Southern ... Kansas State hired Tim Weiser as athletics director. Weiser, who succeeds Max Urick, has been athletics director at Colorado State for three years ... Marvin Stringfellow announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective May 31. Stringfellow has guided the athletics department since January 1998. The school appointed head football coach Steve Keenum as Stringfellow's successor. Keenum is entering his seventh year as head football coach ... Clark Atlanta chose Brenda L. Edmonds as director of athletics. Edmonds, who replaces interim athletics director Angelyne Brown, has been assistant athletics director at Southern since 1997 and spent from 1999 to 2000 as interim athletics director ... Howard Patterson, athletics director at Incarnate Word since 1990, resigned, effective May 31. Patterson also served as head men's soccer coach at the school from 1990 to 1999 ... North Dakota State hired Gene Taylor as athletics director to succeed Bob Entzion. For the past 15 years, Taylor has worked at Navy, most recently as associate athletics director ... Debby De Angelis was appointed as athletics director at Cal State Hayward, replacing Doug Weiss. Since 1996, De Angelis has served as associate athletics director for internal operations at Towson ... Tim M. Van Alstine was selected as athletics director at Western Illinois. Van Alstine has been senior associate athletics director at Ohio and succeeds Helen Smiley ... Southwest Baptist's Jim Middleton assumed additional duties as athletics director. Men's basketball -- Illinois State head coach Tom Richardson agreed to terms on a four-year contract ... Thad Matta was hired as head coach at Xavier. Matta spent last season as head coach at Butler ... Todd Lickliter assumed duties as head coach at Butler, replacing Thad Matta. For the last two sesasons, Lickliter has been an assistant with the program ... Nebraska-Omaha chose Kevin McKenna as head coach ... Clayton State hired Gordon Gibbons as head coach to replace Jimmy Hebron. For the past 10 years, Gibbons has guided the Florida Southern program ... Men's basketball assistants -- Jason Shelton was appointed as an assistant coach at Colorado ... Duquesne selected Charles Cunningham, Randy Roth and John Mahoney as assistants. The school also selected Billy Reid as director of basketball operations. Cunningham was an assistant at UNLV last season and Roth served as an assistant coach at Robert Morris last season. For the past three seasons, Mahoney has worked as an assistant coach at Robert Morris, and Ried spent last season as an assistant at Rhode Island ... Kenny Gattison was named as an assistant coach at Old Dominion ... Rutgers awarded Stan Nance with responsibilities as director of operations for men's basketball ... Runge guided the program to the 160-73 mark in eight seasons. The school elevated assistant coach Dan Muscatell to interim head coach ... Trisha Brown was added as head coach at Stonehill ... Melissa Tyber was selected as head coach at Belmont Abbey ... Saint Rose hired Karen Haag as head coach to replace Curt Bailey. For the past 10 seasons, Haag has been head coach at Wilkes ... Wendy Schuller was chosen as head coach at Eastern Washington. Schuller, who succeeds Jocelyn Pfeifer, comes from Northwestern State, where she started as a graduate assistant and most recently fulfilled associate head coaching duties ... Dayna Westbrook was appointed as an assistant at Stephen F. Austin ... Illinois State added Christopher Mennig as as an assistant. Mennig has served as an assistant at St. Bonaventure since 1998 ... Aukse Harris was tabbed as an assistant at West Virginia. Harris has been an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth for two seasons ... Mary Beth Snell was added as an assistant coach at Villanova ... Tennessee Tech promoted Amy Brown to associate head coach. Brown has been an assistant with the program for five seasons.

Men's and women's cross country -- George Washington selected Debra L. Hasfurther as head men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's fencing -- New Jersey Tech head men's coach Idan Mandelbaum resigned.

Field hockey -- Karen Fitzpatrick announced retirement plans as head coach at Ball State, effective June 30. Fitzpatrick has guided the program for 21 years and closes her tenure with a career record of 285-130-11.

Football -- Henderson State head coach Patrick Nix resigned to become receivers and quarterbacks coach at Samford. Nix has been head coach since the 1999 season ... Christopher McKenney was hired as head coach at Maine Maritime. McKenney has been coaching at Springfield since 1991 ... Dan Baranik resigned as head coach at Waynesburg to become coach of the Army Prep football team.

Football assistants -- New Hampshire chose Tony Trisciani, Richard Maresco, Jeff McDonald, Ted Stewart and Scot Ruggles as assistant coaches ... Carlton Cottner was selected as defensive coordinator and Russ Houser was selected as defensive secondary coach at Kenyon. For the past year, Cottner has worked as defensive coordinator at Merchant Marine, and Houser is a recent graduate of Malone College ... Henderson State offensive coordinator Doug Meacham resigned to become offensive line coach at Samford ... Cary Marquell succeeds Jay Sawvel as defensive secondary coach and special teams coordinator at Ferris State. Marquell has been an assistant at Cortland State for two seasons.

Men's and women's gymnastics -- Mark and Rene Cook were appointed as co-head women's coaches at Arkansas ... Illinois State's Jill Hollembeak resigned as head coach.

Men's and women's gymnastics assistant -- UCLA selected Miles Johnson as assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Ruthann Cantile resigned as head women's coach at Bemidji State ... Karl Enroth was chosen as head men's coach at Western New England. Enroth, who has been an assistant women's coach at Amherst during the 2000-01 season, replaces Mike Badger.

Men's soccer -- Ashland named John Hall as head men's and women's coach ... Hylton Dayes was hired as head coach at Cincinnati. Dayes, who replaces Jeff Cook, has been head coach at Wright State for four seasons ... George Mason chose Fran O'Leary as head coach ... Jackie Court retired as head women's coach at Brown ... Chris Smith was named as head coach at Manhattanville. Smith, who succeeds Peter Schachter, has been an assistant at Southern Connecticut State ... Greenville elevated assistant coach Brian McMahon to head coach to replace Brian Reinhard.

Men's soccer assistant -- John Mello was tabbed as an assistant coach at Rhode Island College. Mello currently coaches the Northern Lightning Soccer Club of the New England Premier Soccer League.

Women's soccer -- Dan Magner was hired as head coach at St. Bonaventure. For the past two years, Magner has been an assistant coach at Massachusetts.

Women's soccer assistants -- Jodi Fisher assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Memphis ... Tulsa selected Kerry Shubert as an assistant coach. Shubert has worked as head soccer coach at Edmond (Oklahoma) Santa Fe High School for eight years.

Softball -- Eastern Connecticut State elevated Diana Pepin to head coach. Pepin replaces Rich Page, who resigned ... LeAnn Hakeman was hired as head coach at Monmouth (Illinois). Hakeman has served as head athletic trainer and exercise science instructor at Buena Vista since 1996 ... Georgia Southern will not renew the contract of head coach Kelley Kirkland.

Men's and women's swimming -- Matt Kredich was appointed as head women's coach at Richmond. Kredich has been director of swimming at Brown ... Juniata tabbed Chris Villa as head women's coach, succeeding Kathy Collins. Villa, who was an assistant coach with the women's program last season, will continue as aquatics director at the school.

Men's and women's tennis -- Chad Hebert resigned as head coach at Troy State ... Guilford named Jennifer Wolos as head women's coach, succeeding Caroline McAlister. Wolos served as a health and physical education teacher at Kiser Middle School in Greensboro, North Carolina ... Florida released Ian Duvenhage as head coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Franklin and Marshall head women's coach Steve Coulson resigned, effective May 31 ... Bobbi Petersen was promoted to head coach at Northern Iowa. Petersen, an assistant coach with the program for six years, succeeds the retired Iradge Ahrabi-Fard ... Rowan named Noelle Hughes as head women's coach ... Janiece Holder resigned as head coach at Stetson, effective May 31. Holder has guided the program since 1988.

STAFF

Administrative -- Brown appointed John Barrett as travel coordinator ... Idaho State chose Jeff Nehring as athletics fiscal officer.

Communications assistants -- Colgate named Christina Cracolici and Sara Day as athletics communications interns.

Strength and conditioning -- Dave Kennedy resigned as football strength and conditioning coach at Ohio State.

CONFERENCES

Richard Hannan was named as commissioner of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The conference is new and gains official status as a member of the NCAA Division II on September 1. Currently, Hannan is interim athletics director at Lewis-Clark State College.

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference hired Julie Voeck as coordinator of volleyball officials, effective July 1, 2001. Voeck has fulfilled similar duties at the Lake Michigan Conference and the Midwest Conference. <

CORRECTION

The May 7 issue of The NCAA News, reported that Utah placed sixth in the National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships. A score change immediately after the meet, however, boosted the Utes' score to 196.025, which tied them for fifth in the team competition with Nebraska.

NOTABLES

Mohini Bhardwaj, a senior gymnast at UCLA, was chosen as the Honda award winner as the top collegiate woman in her sport for 2000-01. In addition to capturing the NCAA championship in floor exercise and helping UCLA win the team championship, Bhardwaj established school records for the most perfect 10s in a season (eight), the most career perfect 10s and most 10s in a meet (three).

Luke Donald, a senior at Northwestern, and Reilly Rankin, a junior at Georgia, were named as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for April.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named Adria Engel, a sophomore at Arizona State, and Peter Luczak, a senior at Fresno State, as national players of the month for April. The organization also selected Whitney Laiho and Jessica Lehnhoff of Florida and K.J. Hippensteel and Alex Kim of Stanford as women's and men's national doubles teams for April.

Kendra Berner, a junior swimmer at Davidson, was awarded the Honda Inspiration award, presented annually to the collegiate woman athlete who has overcome great physical adversity to contribute to the recognizable success of her team. During the the Colonial Athletic Association championships, Berner, who has a congenital deformation of her right hand, turned in the team's fastest time this season and the second-fastest time in school history in the 50-yard freestyle.

DEATHS

Former basketball coach James Boyce died of cancer April 28. Boyce, 64, was head coach at Eastern Michigan from 1979 to 1986. He also worked as an assistant at Michigan and Detroit.

John Lotz, former basketball coach, died May 5 at the age of 64. Lotz spent seven years as head coach at Florida and eight years as an assistant at North Carolina.
