Conradt steps down as athletics director

Jody Conradt has resigned as women's athletics director at Texas to focus on responsibilities as head women's basketball coach. Conradt has fulfilled the dual role since 1992, when she assumed the women's athletics director post.

Conradt joined the Texas athletics department in 1976 when she took over as head women's basketball coach and head volleyball coach. Although she relinquished volleyball coaching duties after two seasons, Conradt has gone on to compile 745 career basketball wins. Her 1985-86 squad completed a 34-0 season to become the first undefeated Division I women's basketball national champions.

Texas announced Chris Plonsky as Conradt's successor on an interim basis in addition to being named senior associate athletics director for men's and women's athletics. Most recently, Plonsky has been senior associate athletics director for external services.

Villarreal has spent the past three years as associate athletics director at Southern Mississippi ... Pittsburgh-Johnstown announced the retirement of C. Edward Sherlock as athletics director, effective September 28. Sherlock became the school's first athletics director in 1970 ... Mesa State appointed Clarence E. Ross as athletics director to replace P. Douglas Schakel ... Iona's Rich Petriccione was promoted to vice-president for advancement and external affairs, effective July 1. Petriccione most recently has been serving as director of athletics.

Men's basketball -- Portland added Michael Holton as head coach ... John Beilein, head coach at Richmond, signed a contract extension through the 2008 season. Beilein has compiled a 78-39 mark in four seasons as head coach ... Alabama extended the contract of head coach Mark Gottfried. In the past three seasons, Gottfried has guided the school to a 55-42 record ... Buzz Peterson resigned as head coach at Tulsa to become head coach at Tennessee, replacing Jerry Green. Peterson was head coach at Tulsa for one season and led the program to the postseason NIT championship ... Henry Dickerson was awarded a contract extension as head coach at Chattanooga ... Drexel hired James "Bruiser" Flint as head coach to succeed Steve Seymour. Flint recently resigned as head coach at Massachusetts after leading the program since 1996 ... Thomas most recently was a player personnel scout for the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, and Spoonhour served as an assistant coach at Saint Louis from 1996 to 1999. The school also added Deane Martin as an assistant coach and Dave Rice as director of basketball operations ... Rich Wold was appointed as an assistant at Portland ... Clark Maloney resigned after two seasons as an assistant coach at West Texas A&M ... Northern Illinois named Mike Shepherd as an assistant coach ... Cheryl Littlejohn, head coach at Minnesota, was placed on an indefinite leave of absence ... St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania) released Stephanie Gaitley after 10 seasons as head coach ... Candace Crabtree, head coach at Drexel, was awarded a contract extension through the 2001-02 season ... Katie Meier was selected as head coach at Charlotte. For the past seven years, Meier has served as an assistant at Tulane, including the past two as associate head coach. ... Curry head coach Michael Barrett resigned ... Women's basketball assistants -- Army chose Jessica Vanco as an assistant coach ... Denise Dillon was awarded responsibilities as an assistant coach at Drexel ... Marshall appointed Roxanne White as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- Birmingham Southern added Elisa Bragga as head men's and women's coach. Bragga was an assistant coach at the high-school level last season.

Football -- Maine Maritime hired Christopher McKenney as head coach. McKenney has been an assistant coach at Springfield since 1991 ... Mike Farley was selected as head coach at Northern Iowa. Farley, linebackers coach at Kansas from 1997 to 2000, replaces Mike Dunbar.

Football assistants -- West Virginia hired Tony Gibson as an assistant. During the 1999 and 2000 seasons, Gibson was defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at West Virginia Tech ... Wingate announced the selection of Jim Gibbons as offensive coordinator, Rashaan Jordan as defensive coordinator, Mike Long as offensive line coach, Chet Henicle as defensive backs coach and Matt Durant as wide receivers coach ... Bill Salmon resigned as offensive coordinator at Kansas to become assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Northern Iowa ... Massachusetts added Sean Spencer as defensive line coach ... Alcorn State appointed John McKenzie as offensive coordinator ... Robert Rohan was chosen as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Ashland ... Sam Houston State added Thomas Herman as wide receivers coach and Clay Jennings as defensive secondary coach ... Kurt Barber was named as defensive line coach at Kent State. Barber, who replaces Paul Haynes, has been defensive line coach at Tennessee-Martin for two seasons. The school also announced defensive coordinator Greg Colby will serve as inside linebackers coach, and inside linebackers coach Ron Wright will move to outside linebackers coach ... Towson hired Mike McGlinchey as running backs coach. McGlinchey spent last season as tight ends coach at Princeton.

Men's and women's golf -- John Wiler was named as head men's coach at Miami (Ohio), effective July 1. Wiler, who succeeds Rodger Cromer, has spent the past four years as men's and women's assistant coach at Kent State.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Elmira elevated Tim Ceglarski to head men's coach. Ceglarski has been assistant men's coach for four seasons and succeeds Glenn Thomaris.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Courtney Lockhart was named as an assistant women's coach at Keene State. Lockhart, who currently works in the admissions office at New England, was an assistant women's coach at Salisbury State during the 1999 season ... Dave Kemmy assumed additional responsibilities as associate men's coach at Roger Williams. Kemmy also serves as head wrestling coach and assistant athletics director for administration and sports information. The school also named Ryan McDonald as an assistant men's coach.

Men's soccer -- Brian Kelley was hired as head coach at Defiance. For the past two years, Kelley has worked as an assistant coach and goalkeepers coach at Muhlenberg.

Men's soccer assistant -- Pennsylvania appointed Robert Butehorn as an assistant coach. From 1995 to 1999, Butehorn served as head coach at St. Bonaventure.

Women's soccer -- Kim Sutton was named as head coach at Chico State, succeeding Bob Russ, who resigned after 29 years. Sutton spent from 1995 through 2000 as head coach at Humboldt State.

Women's soccer assistant -- Mike Calise was chosen as an assistant coach at Arizona State.

Men's and women's swimming -- Wingate added Kirk Sanocki as head women's coach. For the past three years, Sanocki has been an assistant swimming coach and assistant director of aquatics at Western Maryland ... New Jersey Institute of Technology named Tom Romano as head men's and women's swimming coach, succeeding Amy Brander, who resigned as assistant athletics director, compliance director and head men's and women's swimming coach. Romano, who serves as head women's soccer coach and intramurals director, was interim head swimming coach during the 2000-01 academic year ... Ray Bosse resigned as head men's and women's coach at Army.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Cal State Chico hired Jim Moore as head coach. Moore, who replaces Mary Wallmark, formerly was head coach at Texas for four years ... Andrew Palileo was named as head coach at South Dakota State. Palileo takes over for Mary Byrne after working as head coach at Bethel (Minnesota) for the past four seasons.

STAFF

Athletics communications assistant -- Bowling Green hired Kris Kamann as assistant director of athletics communications. Most recently, Kamann has been assistant director of athletics media relations at Indiana State.

Business manager -- Heather German was selected as senior business manager at Kent State. German most recently has fulfilled the position on an interim basis and previously served as an auditor in the school's auditing department.

Compliance -- South Dakota added Joshua Snyder as coordinator of compliance, student services and ticketing. Snyder has been a compliance assistant at Nebraska-Omaha since August 2000.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Richard McGlynn was hired as a student-athlete reinstatement representative. McGlynn has been commissioner of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Gail Dent was added as assistant director of public relations. Dent has been with the United States Olympic Committee since 1997 and most recently has been media and public relations programs manager with the organization.

ASSOCIATIONS

David Ward was selected as president of the American Council on Education. Ward, who succeeds Stanley O. Ikenberry, is chancellor emeritus at Wisconsin, director of the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education and a visiting scholar at the Center for Studies in Higher Education at California.

The Orange Bowl Committee named Randy Messinger as assistant executive director for administration. For the past nine years, Messinger has fulfilled responsibilities as Kent State's assistant athletics director for business.

NOTABLES

Misty Hyman, the 2001 NCAA champion in the 200-yard butterfly, was chosen as the Honda Award winner for swimming and diving as the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport for the 2000-01 year. Hyman, a senior all-American at Stanford, also won Honda Award recognition in 1997-98.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association chose Marco Baron, a senior at Mississippi State, and Ansley Cargill, a freshman at Duke, as players of the month for March. The association also named Southern California's Ryan Moore and Nick Rainey and Pepperdine's Paola Palencia and Ipek Senoglu as men's and women's doubles teams of the month.

Jeff Quinney, a senior at Arizona State, and Kelli Kamimura, a junior at Washington, were named as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for March.

DEATHS

Francis X. Cretzmeyer, former coach at Iowa, died April 2. Cretzmeyer guided the men's cross country and track and field programs from 1948 to 1978, leading squads to two Big Ten cross country championships, two outdoor track conference titles and a tie for an indoor track conference championship. He also coached at Grinnell from 1947 to 1948.
