Gober selected as head volleyball coach

Southern Illinois-Edwardsville has hired Todd Gober as head women's volleyball coach. Gober replaces acting head coach Joe Fisher.

For the past five seasons, Gober has guided the Southwestern Illinois College women's volleyball program. During his tenure at the junior college, Gober amassed a 204-54 record and led the squad to appearances in the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament in 1998 and 1999. Twice he was recognized as conference coach of the year in addition to earning coach-of-the-year honors at the regional and district levels.

Gober earned a bachelor of arts degree in business at Northwestern (Iowa) College in 1985 and earned a master of arts in finance from Saint Louis in 1991.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Joseph E. (Tim) Gilmour was selected as president at Wilkes, effective in June. Gilmour has been provost at Northwest Missouri State ... Lake Forest appointed Stephen D. Schutt as president, effective July 1. Most recently, Schutt has served as vice-president and chief of staff at Pennsylvania ... Neari F. Warner was chosen as acting president at Grambling State. Warner is provost and vice-president for academic affairs at the school ... Marcelette G. Williams assumed responsibilities as interim chancellor at Massachusetts, effective in June. Williams is deputy chancellor and professor of English and comparative literature at the school.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Clarence Ross was elevated to athletics director at Mesa State, succeeding Doug Schakel. Ross has served as assistant athletics director and assistant football coach at the school since 1998 ... Ursinus chose Brian Thomas as athletics director, effective July 1 ... Michael S. McNeely was hired as athletics director at Indiana. Succeeding Clarence H. Doninger, who is retiring, McNeely has been vice-president and chief operating officer of the NFL's San Diego Chargers. McNeely formerly was director of athletics at Pacific (California) and former NCAA director of operations.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Donna Olson announced plans to retire as senior associate women's athletics director at Minnesota, effective June 30. Olson, who has been with the school since 1985, also spent 14 years at Montclair State as an assistant athletics director overseeing women's sports ... Southern Mississippi elevated Mike Moltea to associate athletics director for academic and athletics compliance. Moltea has been director of compliance.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Hofstra's Mark Cox accepted additional duties as team administrator for individual sports. Cox also serves as assistant director of athletics for development and corporate marketing ... Johnny Cunningham was hired as assistant athletics director for sports information/athletics marketing and promotions at Olivet. Cunningham succeeds Scott Hirko.

COACHES

Baseball assistant -- Albany (New York) hired Mark Lavenia as an assistant. Lavenia has played professionally at the minor- league level since 1993 and was pitching coach at Columbia-Greene Community College last year.

Men's basketball -- Dennis Harp resigned as head coach at Hardin-Simmons ... Nevada agreed to terms with head coach Trent Johnson on a two-year contract extension through the 2003-04 season ... Ed Reilly resigned as head coach at Bryant, a position he has held since 1989 ... Mike Reynolds resigned as head coach at Ouachita Baptist to assume another position at the school. Reynolds served as an assistant with the program from 1984 until accepting head coaching duties in 1989 ... Rodger Goodling retired as head coach at Shippensburg.

Men's and women's cross country -- Jana Schulson was chosen as part-time head men's and women's coach at New England College.

Women's basketball -- Morningside head coach Craig Stevens resigned after two seasons.

Field hockey -- Saint Joseph's (Maine) named Patricia Fowler as head coach, replacing Melissa Ela. For the past 10 years, Fowler has been coaching at the high-school level ... Kent State awarded head coach Kerry De Vries a three-year contract extension.

Football -- Blaine Bennett resigned after six seasons as head coach at Western Oregon to succeed Keith Uperesa as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Idaho State ... Western New Mexico chose Charley Wade as head coach ... Ursinus chose Peter Gallagher as head coach ... Mansfield head coach Joe Gilbert resigned to become offensive line coach at Toledo. Mansfield named Chris Woods as head coach ... Belhaven chose Dennis F. Roland as head coach.

Football assistants -- Kent State's secondary coach Paul Haynes resigned to accept responsibilities with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars ... Rice named Scott Wachenheim as offensive coordinator and John Bland as quarterbacks coach ... Dino Babers was appointed as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M ... Miami (Florida) hired Randy Shannon as defensive coordinator. Shannon, who formerly was an assistant coach at the school for seven seasons, has been an assistant coach with the NFL's Miami Dolphins for the past three years ... San Jose State selected Norman Joseph as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Ron Lee as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, Earl Buckingham as assistant head coach and defensive line coach, and Kyle O'Quinn as tight ends coach. Joseph has served as head coach at Belhaven College, and Lee has spent the past eight seasons as defensive backs coach at Colorado State. Buckingham most recently was defensive coordinator at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and O'Quinn worked as offensive coordinator at Lufkin (Texas) High School for six seasons ... David Lee was named as quarterbacks coach, George Pugh was added as wide receivers coach and Dave Wommack was appointed as defensive line coach at Arkansas ... R. Todd Littlejohn was chosen as cornerbacks coach at UCLA ... Keith Borges was appointed as tight ends coach at California ... Oregon State named Al Simmons as an assistant coach ... Dave Telford assumed duties as offensive coordinator at Portland State ... Chris Hedden resigned as co-offensive coordinator and Kevin Perkins resigned as outside linebackers coach at Northern Iowa ... Sands, running backs coach at Citadel for the past two seasons, will assume similar responsibilities at Ohio ... Rick Whitt was chosen as defensive coordinator at Memphis ... Duane Akina resigned as defensive coordinator at Arizona to become secondary coach at Texas ... Georgia Tech named Geoff Collins as tight ends coach. Most recently, Collins has served as a graduate assistant coach at the school ... Rich Duncan was appointed as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Loras ... Notre Dame hired Bill Sheridan as safeties coach and special teams assistant and hired David Lockwood as cornerbacks coach. Sheridan has been linebackers coach for the past three years at Michigan State and also spent the 2000 season as special teams co-coordinator. Lockwood, who succeeds Jerry Rosburg, was defensive backs coach at West Virginia last season. The school also named Joker Phillips as receivers coach to succeed Urban Meyer. Phillips has been wide receivers coach at Minnesota for the past two seasons ... Middle Tennessee chose Steve Davis as defensive coordinator, Darin Hinshaw as running backs coach and Kevin Fouquier as linebackers coach ... Tyrone Nix was promoted to defensive coordinator and defensive line coach and Randy Butler was elevated to assistant head coach at Southern Mississippi ... Tim Banks assumed duties as outside linebackers coach at Memphis ... Louisiana-Monroe selected Tim Rebowe as defensive backs coach ... Cincinnati named Dave Baldwin as offensive coordinator ... Marvin Sanders was added as defensive backs coach at Colorado State ... Florida hired Jerry Odom as inside linebackers coach. Odom spent last season as a graduate assistant with the program ... Richard Moncrief was appointed as receivers coach at Alabama-Birmingham ... Penn State hired Ron Vanderlinden as linebackers coach, Kenny Carter as wide receivers coach and Brian Norwood as an assistant coach. Last season, Vanderlinden was released as head coach at Maryland after four seasons. Carter, who has been running backs coach at Pittsburgh, succeeds Kenny Jackson, who became wide receivers coach for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers. Last season, Norwood was defensive backs coach at Texas Tech. The school also announced the retirement of football equipment manager Tim Shope. Shope, who joined the school in 1961, began working with the football program in 1971 as an assistant equipment manager and was named as equipment manager for the program in 1979 ... Northern Illinois hired Frank Kurth as offensive guards and lefts coach and DeAndre Smith as running backs coach to replace Paul Alt and Jay Boulware. Kurth most recently was an assistant at West Virginia, and Smith has served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Indiana State. The program moved running backs coach Matt Canada to quarterbacks coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Richmond's Nat Withers resigned as head golf coach, effective at the end of the 2000-01 season ... Temple head coach John MacDonald announced plans to retire, effective at the end of the season. During his 30-year tenure, MacDonald has captured seven Atlantic 10 Conference championships, five East Coast Conference titles, two Middle Atlantic Conference titles and seven Eastern championships ... Jay Loar was awarded responsibilities as director of golf operations at Southern Methodist and Ted Gleason was selected as head men's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Guy Van Arsdale resigned after 12 years as head men's coach at Rochester Institute of Technology to become head coach of the Major League Lacrosse franchise in Rochester. The school chose Andy Cooney as interim head coach.

Men's soccer -- Butler tabbed Joe Sochacki as head coach.

Men's soccer assistants -- Oregon State selected Jesse Cormier and Stephen Simmons as assistant coaches. Cormier served as an assistant men's coach at West Virginia during the 2000-01 season, and Simmons has been head men's and women's coach at Linfield since 1996 ... Cal State Fullerton named Eddie Soto as an assistant coach ... Mike Sober was chosen as an assistant at Saint Louis. Sober, who had 67 appearances with the United States Men's Soccer National Team, most recently retired from Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire.

Women's soccer -- Rebecca Lisack resigned as head coach at Plymouth State to become an assistant at South Carolina. Lisack closes a two-season tenure with a 22-14-3 mark.

Women's soccer assistant -- Derrek Falor assumed duties as an assistant coach at DePaul.

Softball -- Cheri Swineford, an assistant at Susquehanna, was promoted to co-head coach.

Softball assistants -- Stacy Simpson was hired as an assistant coach at Albany (New York).

Men's and women's volleyball -- Assumption named William Torres as head women's coach to succeed Christian Franklin. Most recently, Torres has guided the women's volleyball program at Fitchburg State ... St. Francis (Pennsylvania) named Scott Gleason as head women's coach ... Kerry Messersmith was added as head coach at Georgia Southern.

STAFF

Athletics communications -- Eric McDowell resigned as director of athletics communications at Cornell.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Albany (New York) chose Kimberly Doyle as an assistant athletic trainer. Doyle has been an athletic training intern at the school.

Compliance -- David Reed was hired as compliance coordinator at Pittsburgh. Reed has been assistant compliance director at Marshall.

Compliance assistant -- Marshall named Kevin Klotz as assistant compliance director to replace David Reed. Klotz has been a compliance intern at Ohio.

Development assistant -- Penn State appointed Bob White as associate director of development. Last year, White served as football assistant defensive line and special teams coach.

Strength and conditioning -- Loyola (Illinois) hired David Vitel as strength and conditioning coach. Most recently, Vitel has been a strength and conditioning coach with the NBA's Chicago Bulls.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Clemson appointed Russell Patterson as assistant director of strength and conditioning.

ASSOCIATIONS

Amy Frankenstein was hired as executive director of the United States Field Hockey Association, effective April 1. Frankenstein, who succeeds the retired Jane Betts, has most recently served as an assistant director of championships at the NCAA national office.

CORRECTIONS

The Number Crunching graphic on page 3 of the February 26 NCAA News mislabeled the divisions that the leading free-throw-streak holders represented. Paul Cluxton, the all-time leader, is from Division II University of Northern Kentucky, while Division I men's leader Gary Buchanan is from Villanova University. In the women's list, Valerie Kepner of Baldwin-Wallace College is the Division III leader and Denise Gallo of the University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown, is the Division II leader.

A Division II note in the February 26 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly described a new sport at Dowling College. The institution has added women's cross country for the 2001 season.

DEATHS

Jerry Frei, former head football coach at Oregon, died February 16. Frei, 76, guided the program from 1967 to 1971. After serving at Oregon, Frei worked as an assistant coach with various NFL teams and most recently served as a scout and director of college scouting for the Denver Broncos.

Former Wittenburg football player Jon Warga died of a heart attack February 16 at the age of 31. Warga led the nation in rushing in 1990, his senior season, gaining more than 200 yards a game in six of 10 games during the season. Warga had been a senior director of corporate development at an Internet company.

Robert Jordan, former coach at Mount Union and former assistant baseball coach at Akron, died February 18. He was 70.

Devaughn Darling, a Florida State football player, collapsed and died February 26. Darling, 18, was a special teams starter as a freshman last season.

Texas football player Cole Pittman died in a one-car accident February 26. Pittman, a sophomore defensive end, collected 30 tackles, two sacks and five tackles for loss, and was responsible for five quarterback pressures and one fumble in 23 games in two seasons.

Former Northern Illinois football and basketball player Chuck Roundy died February 21 at the age of 95. Roundy was a two-time letter-winner in football in 1925 and 1926. He also competed as a guard on the 1926-27 squad that earned an appearance in the National Basketball Championship.

Ray Dorr, former assistant football coach at Texas A&M, died from Lou Gehrig's disease March 1. Dorr, 59, was quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M before retiring from on-field coaching after the 1999 season. He formerly coached at Kentucky, Southern California, Washington, Kent State, Southern Illinois and Akron.
