Rockford elevates King to athletics director

Kristyn King has been promoted to athletics director at Rockford.

King has been with the school since 1991, when she was appointed assistant women's basketball and assistant softball coach. In 1992, King was elevated to head coach of both programs. Although she relinquished head basketball coaching responsibilities in 1995, King will retain her post as head softball coach. Most recently, in addition to head coaching duties, King has fulfilled duties as senior woman administrator, assistant athletics director, fitness center director, summer conference assistant and adjunct faculty member.

King earned a bachelor of arts degree at Rockford in 1989. She also earned bachelor of science and master's degrees in education at Northwest Missouri State.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Bowdoin selected Barry Mills as president, effective July 1. Mills has been deputy presiding partner at Debevoise and Plimpton in New York.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Morris Brown appointed head men's basketball coach Russell Ellington as interim athletics director. Ellington replaces Gene Bright, who resigned ... Kathleen M. McNally was hired as athletics director at Hawaii-Hilo. McNally, who succeeds Bill Trumbo, served as director of athletics and recreational services at Gannon from January 1998 to July 1999 ... MIT named Candace L. Royer as director of athletics and head of the department of athletics, physical education and recreation. Replacing Richard Hill, Royer joined the program at MIT as head women's tennis coach and assistant director of physical education in 1981.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Vermont added Sue Marsland as senior woman administrator and assistant director of athletics. Since August, Marsland has worked as director of athletics academic services at Western Michigan.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF
ATHLETICS

Mark Ewing was elevated to associate athletics director for business at LSU ... Gregg Fort was named as associate athletics director for external affairs at Stephen F. Austin. Fort has been director of the capital campaign at the school since April 2000.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF
ATHLETICS

Wisconsin chose Douglas Beard as assistant athletics director. Since 1989, Beard has held several positions in the athletics department at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, including most recently working as associate athletics director ... Rockford elevated Bob Amsberry to assistant athletics director. Amsberry also serves as head women's basketball and golf coach ... Mike Roebuck was chosen as assistant director of athletics for academic services and NCAA compliance at Gardner-Webb.

COACHES

Baseball -- Ramapo hired Rich Martin as head coach. Martin most recently spent seven years as head coach at Hofstra ... Keuka appointed Jeff Cleanthes as head coach.

Baseball assistants -- Victor Rosario was added as an assistant coach and Peter Breihof was chosen as pitching coach at Ramapo ... Dan Coia was appointed as an assistant coach at Monmouth ... Greensboro selected Ken Carlyle and Dan Planck as assistant coaches. A former professional player in the Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Braves organizations, Carlyle most recently was a merchandise manager with the Amateur Athletic Union. Planck is a 2000 graduate of Gardner-Webb, where he established the career saves record and the single-season saves mark.

Women's basketball -- Stephanie Gaitley has taken a paid leave of absence as head coach at St. Joseph's. Assistant Reggi Grennan will assume interim head coaching duties for the rest of the season ... Rick Berger resigned as head coach at Westfield State. Assistant coach Kristen Schmaelzle assumed responsibilities as acting head coach.

Women's basketball assistant -- Pam Bowden was awarded duties as administrative assistant for women's basketball at Syracuse. From 1984 to 1999, Bowden fulfilled duties as an assistant coach at Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne.

Men's and women's cross country -- Dowling appointed Tracy DiMarco as head women's coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition in fall 2001.

Football -- Kentucky State named Donald Smith as head coach ... Miami (Florida) head coach Butch Davis resigned after six seasons to assume head coaching duties with the NFL's Cleveland Browns. Larry Coker, offensive coordinator since 1995, was promoted to replace Davis ... Jon Heacock was elevated to head coach at Youngstown State. Heacock most recently has been defensive coordinator and replaces Jim Tressel ... Morris Brown selected Sol Brannan as head coach to succeed Joe Crosby ... Paul Hamilton, head coach at East Tennessee State, signed a two-year contract extension, through the 2003 season ... Jacksonville signed head coach Steve Gilbert to a three-year contract extension through the 2003 season ... Southwest Baptist added Ray Richards as head coach ... Wisconsin awarded head coach Barry Alvarez with a contract extension. Alvarez has guided the program to a 79-48-4 mark in 11 seasons.

Football assistants -- Gerald Carr was named as quarterbacks coach at Indiana ... Ohio State selected Mark Dantonio as defensive coordinator and secondary coach, Jim Bollman as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Ken Conatser as special teams coach and Bob Tucker as director of football operations ... Mike Denbrock was awarded duties as offensive line coach at Stanford ... Citadel appointed Everette Sands as an assistant coach ... Robert Prince was chosen as wide receivers coach at Boise State ... Colorado hired Eric Bieniemy as running backs coach. Bieniemy closed his nine-year NFL career in 1999 ... Brad Lambert was named as inside linebackers coach at Wake Forest ... Mike Sullivan accepted duties as defensive secondary coach, Mike Summers was hired as offensive line coach and Pete Germano was added as recruiting coordinator at Ohio. Sullivan has been an assistant coach at Army for the past two seasons. Last season, Summers served as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State. Germano has been head coach at Case Western Reserve for two seasons ... Ohio State chose Mark Snyder as linebackers coach ... Kent State named Mike Drake as offensive coordinator, Paul Haynes as assistant coach, Dan Kratzer as wide receivers coach and Bill Mottola as centers and guards coach ... Utah chose Craig Ver Steeg as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach ... Pete Hoener resigned as running backs coach at Texas A&M ... UTEP named Bob Wagner as defensive coach ... Mike Levenseller was appointed as offensive coordinator at Washington State ... Central Missouri State hired Jeff Hecklinski as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Hecklinski, who replaces Dave Bassore, has spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College ... Dan Ferrigno was chosen as wide receivers coach at Oregon ... Penn State named Ron Vanderlinden as linebackers coach. Vanderlinden was most recently released after four years as head coach at Maryland ... Stephen F. Austin appointed Kim Dameron as defensive coordinator ... Cal Poly hired David Fipp as secondary coach, Joe DuPaix as quarterbacks/running backs coach, David Brown as linebackers coach, Joe Seumalo as defensive line coach and Brent Brennan as tight ends/wide receivers coach. Fipp has been a defensive graduate assistant at Arizona; DuPaix has been an assistant at Riverton (Utah) High School; and Brown has been running backs, special teams coach and academic coordinator at Idaho for two seasons. Seumalo was a graduate assistant coach at Hawaii for two years, and Brennan served as a graduate assistant coach at Arizona during the 2000 season ... Georgia named David Johnson as tight ends coach ... Stephen Dunlap was appointed assistant defensive coach at Syracuse.

Men's and women's golf -- Carson-Newman selected John Minor as head coach ... Craig Rex was added as head men's and women's coach at Sam Houston State.

Men's soccer -- John Murphy resigned as head men's and women's coach and director of soccer operations at Assumption to serve as goalkeepers coach for New England of MLS. The school promoted assistant men's coach Bryan Laut to head coach ... Keuka selected Christopher Condron as head coach ... Mars Hill's Kelly Finley resigned as head coach to become an assistant men's coach at Charlotte.

Men's soccer assistant -- Jorge Salcedo assumed duties as an assistant coach at UCLA.

Women's soccer -- Assumption elevated Neil Stafford to head coach to succeed John Murphy, who moved on to a coaching post with New England of MLS. Stafford has been assistant men's and women's coach ... Chris Baker was awarded head coaching responsibilities at Drury ... Southern California awarded head coach Jim Millinder a five-year contract extension ... San Francisco selected Pamela Kalinoski as head coach ... Manhattan hired Billy Walsh as head coach.

Women's soccer assistant -- Michele Rodriguez-Smith accepted assistant coaching responsibilities at Georgia.

Softball -- Heather Bruder assumed responsibilities as head coach at Hillsdale.

Softball assistant -- Caryl Drohan was promoted to associate head coach at Hofstra. Drohan had been an assistant coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Steven Johns accepted additional responsibilities as head men's and women's coach at Westminster (Missouri). Johns, who replaces Jamie Vargas, will continue as assistant men's basketball coach ... Rochester hired Anna Khvalina as head coach. Khvalina replaces Judith Paul, who resigned ... Scott Handback was hired as head women's coach at Queens (North Carolina), succeeding Phyllis Pharr. Pharr started the program in 1964 and will continue to teach in the physical education department. Handback will continue operating his own tennis program at Palmetto Tennis Academy in Beaufort, South Carolina.

Men's and women's track and field -- Utah head track and cross country coach Mike Jones announced retirement plans, effective after the 2001 season.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- South Alabama named Brad Bowman as an assistant track coach in charge of field events and recruiting ... Leonard Myles-Mills was named as assistant men's coach at Brigham Young ... Oksana Cheeseman was selected as assistant women's coach at Princeton.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Heather Mazeitis assumed duties as head coach at Louisiana Tech ... Utah State appointed Burt Fuller as head women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Utah named Matt McShane as an assistant coach ... Minnesota chose Kim Kumfer as an assistant coach ... Brent Hilliard assumed duties as assistant women's coach at San Diego.

STAFF

Marketing and promotions -- Christie Clark resigned as director of marketing and promotions at Montana. Clark has held the post for four years ... Duke chose Mike Sobb as director of marketing and Scott Yakola as director of sports promotions.

Strength and conditioning -- East Carolina selected Jim Whitten as director of strength and conditioning ... Nick Bucholtz was named as strength and conditioning coach at Louisiana-Lafayette ... Hofstra chose Joe Rodgers as coordinator of the strength and conditioning program, effective February 12.

ASSOCIATIONS

The U.S. Olympic Committee appointed Kevin Neuendorf as coordinator of media and public relations. For the past four years, Neuendorf has been media and public relations assistant at USA Boxing.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Stacy Brooks resigned as a student-athlete reinstatement representative ... Kevin Fite resigned as an enforcement representative.

CAMPS

The Professional Association of Volleyball Officials is hosting referee training camps to help referees at any level advance to the next stage of expertise. The camp, which offers instruction by NCAA-experienced officials, will include video review and will emphasize women's collegiate rules and techniques. NOTABLES

Old Dominion's Marina DiGiacomo was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in field hockey for 2000-01. DiGiacomo, a senior all-America and Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, led the nation in scoring during the season with 63 goals and 25 assists and helped Old Dominion capture the NCAA championship.

DEATHS

Diane Whipple, head women's lacrosse coach at Saint Mary's (California), died January 26. Whipple, 33, had guided the program since October 1999 and formerly served as head coach at UC San Diego. A two-time first-team all-America as a collegiate at Penn State, Whipple was named NCAA national player of the year in 1990.
