Milmoe hired for lacrosse post at Oswego State

Oswego State has hired Adair Milmoe as head women's lacrosse coach. Milmoe succeeds Scott Tucker.

For the past six seasons, Milmoe has served as an assistant coach at Fayetteville-Manlius (New York) High School. During her tenure there, she focused on coaching the defense and working with the goaltenders.

Milmoe competed on the lacrosse squad at William Smith from 1984 through 1988. The school captured the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association title in 1987 and 1988, with Milmoe earning a spot on the all-tournament team in 1988. William Smith also made appearances in the NCAA Division III championship game in 1987 and 1988.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Lee C. Bollinger was named president at Columbia, effective in the summer of 2002. Bollinger currently serves as president at Michigan ... New Jersey Institute of Technology's Saul K. Fenster announced plans to retire, effective in the summer of 2002 ... Gladys Styles-Johnston, president at Nebraska-Kearney, announced retirement plans, effective June 30, 2002.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Dennis Bloomer resigned as athletics director at Limestone, but will continue as head women's basketball coach. The school chose Larry Epperley to fulfill athletics director responsibilities, in addition to retaining duties as head men's basketball coach.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Louisiana-Monroe elevated Traci Murphy to athletic trainer and senior woman administrator. Murphy has been associate athletic trainer ... Maine selected Anne Marie "Piep" van Heuven as assistant to the athletics director/senior woman administrator. Van Heuven, who replaces Ellen Dempsey, has been head women's lacrosse and assistant field hockey coach at Ithaca for the past five years.

FACULTY ATHLETICS
REPRESENTATIVE

New Jersey City named Lila Carrick as faculty athletics representative.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Jeff Poltorak was selected as associate athletics director at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Poltorak has fulfilled the position on an interim basis since September 2000 ... Jon Oliver was named as senior associate athletics director at Virginia.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS
OF ATHLETICS

Louisiana-Monroe appointed David Overturf to assistant athletics director for internal operations and Hank Largin to assistant director of athletics for information and communications. Overturf has served as assistant athletics director for sports medicine at the school, and Largin has worked as sports information director. The school also named Larry McDonald as assistant athletics director for development.

COACHES

Baseball -- Wesleyan (Connecticut) hired Mark Woodworth as interim head coach. Woodworth, who replaces the retired Peter Kostacopoulos, currently serves as an assistant coach at Amherst.

Baseball assistants -- Winthrop chose Jeremy Keller as an assistant coach ... Lafayette appointed Paul Engelhardt as an assistant coach ... Brandon Smith was hired as pitching coach at Dallas. Smith is a 2000 graduate of Louisiana-Monroe and formerly was a draft pick of Major League Baseball's Houston Astros ... Chris Mongiardo was appointed as an assistant coach at Florida Southern.

Men's basketball -- Wayne State (Michigan) appointed David Greer as coach ... Steve Cleveland, head coach at Brigham Young, signed a multiyear contract extension.

Men's basketball assistants -- Florida Atlantic elevated assistant coach Ken Huber to associate head coach ... Dennis Cook, Joe Palermo and Devon Smith were added as assistant coaches at St. Peter's ... Arizona chose Josh Pastner as video coordinator, recruiting coordinator and an administrative assistant for men's basketball ... Justin Furr resigned as an assistant coach at Pfeiffer ... Texas named William Wyatt as a student assistant coach. Wyatt, a junior, played 52 basketball games in two seasons at the school before being granted a medical scholarship after ending his career due to a knee injury ... Anthony Walker and Rich Spottswood were added as assistants at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Walker and Spottswood served as assistants at King's (Pennsylvania) last year ... Florida Southern added Sean Hanrahan and Willie Tillman as assistant coaches ... Rich Casey, Dave Conlon and Mike Gallagher were selected as assistant coaches at Philadelphia Sciences ... Western New England chose Aaron Patterson and Ryan Abraham as assistant coaches ... C.W. Post chose Floyd Bank, Elmer Anderson and Gerald T. Davis as assistant coaches ... Eyal Fierst was chosen as a student assistant coach at Guilford ... Susquehanna appointed Chad Bailey as an assistant coach. During the 2000-01 season, Bailey worked as an assistant at Lycoming ... Muhlenberg appointed Neil Burdis as an assistant men's basketball coach and sports information intern. Burdis is a recent graduate of Misericordia ... Dick Stewart and Aaron Denton were awarded responsibilities as assistants at North Carolina-Greensboro ... Carleton hired Mark Ensrud as an assistant coach to succeed Dan Roiger, who was named as the school's assistant director of student financial services. Ensrud has spent the past six seasons as an assistant coach at the high-school level ... Marc Comstock accepted responsibilities as an assistant at Pfeiffer.

Women's basketball assistants -- Kris Oberdick was chosen as an assistant coach at Ohio Northern ... Tracey Napoleon and Cheryl Bell were added as assistant coaches at Caldwell ... Frostburg State added Avery Carey as an assistant ... Jeff Lorenzo and Andre Bright assumed responsibilities as assistant coaches at Philadelphia Sciences ... Bernard Baruch named Heather Schaffner as an assistant coach ... Carrie Crawford and Michael Pellegrini were added as assistant coaches at Wentworth Institute. Crawford served as a student assistant coach at Buena Vista during the 1996-97 season. Pellegrini spent the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons as head boys' basketball coach at the Brimmer and May School in Massachusetts ... Hilbert named Shannon Rinkus as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- Kelley Cullenberg, who has served as associate head women's coach at Maine-Farmington, was named as head women's coach at the school. Cullenberg will relinquish responsibilities as head coach at Mt. Blue (Maine) High School.

Football -- Pete Hurt was released as head coach at Samford. The school selected offensive coordinator Bill Gray as interim head coach ... Navy released Charlie Weatherbie as head coach. In more than six seasons, Weatherbie guided the program to a 30-46 mark. The school named defensive coordinator Rick Lantz as interim head coach.

Football assistants -- Bucknell chose John Jones as wide receivers coach and promoted assistant coach Marty Schaetzle to offensive coordinator.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Rob Brooks was hired as head women's coach at Brockport State. Brooks, who replaces Tony Zostant, has been an assistant women's coach at Rochester for the past two seasons.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Pfeiffer selected Jessica Demuth as an assistant women's coach.

Men's soccer assistant -- Juan Florez was hired as an assistant coach at Cal State Northridge. Florez formerly was an assistant with the program last season and in 1992. The school also announced that Peter Mastrocinque, a volunteer assistant coach, will work as goalkeepers coach, succeeding Tony Scalercio.

Softball assistants -- Jaime Peterson and Cara Boseski were added as assistant coaches at Bloomfield.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Edinboro appointed Chris Rhodes as head swimming coach ... Purdue chose Wenbo Chen as diving coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Louisiana-Monroe selected Maria Zavala as head women's coach ... New Jersey Institute of Technology's Shelly Licorish resigned as head men's and women's coach. Licorish has guided the programs for just under one year ... Liz Shweky assumed duties as head women's coach at Manhattan ... Jim Pyle resigned after five years as director of tennis at Pacific (Oregon).

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Texas-Pan American hired Marisa Robinson as an assistant track and field and cross country coach.

STAFF

Athletic trainers -- Aaron Terranova was added as head athletic trainer at Merchant Marine. Terranova has been an assistant athletic trainer at Virginia ... Devon Taylor assumed duties as an athletic trainer at Hunter. Taylor was head athletic trainer for Pace's men's basketball squad from 1993 to 1999.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Michelle Swawola was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at New Jersey City. Swawola, who has been a part-time trainer at the school through Kessler Sports Institute, replaces Steve Quagliani ... Merchant Marine hired Melinda Eng as an assistant athletic trainer. Most recently, Eng has worked as an athletic training assistant at Wagner.

Marketing/promotions -- Lamar chose Jennifer Cross as marketing and promotions specialist for athletics. Most recently, Cross has been a reporter, news anchor and producer at KPAX-TV in Missoula, Montana.

Recreation assistant -- Hunter hired Vincent Lobono as assistant recreation director. Lobono has worked in the recreation and intramural programs at Carnegie Mellon and Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

Sports information -- Peter Desmarais was named as sports information director at Framingham State.

Sports information assistants -- Portland chose Erik Wirtanen as an assistant sports information director ... Salina Hood was named as an assistant sports information director at Stetson. For the past two years, Hood has served as an athletics media relations graduate assistant at Troy State.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Rutgers-Camden named Ed Hill as assistant coach for performance enhancement. Hill, who also is a third-year law student at the school, has been with the strength and conditioning program for the past year.

Ticket office -- Elon hired Nora Driver as ticket manager and assistant business manager. Driver, who replaces Kelly Lloyd, has served as a social studies teacher and athletic trainer at the high-school level for the past three years ... Albany (New York) hired Kevin Frattura as director of ticket operations and promotions. Frattura recently served as a corporate sales manager at Palace Sports and Entertainment in Florida.

CONFERENCES

Brad Walker was elevated to assistant commissioner and Kim Hay was hired as director of championships at the West Coast Conference. Walker has been director of communications for the conference, and Hay served as a championships and marketing assistant with the league last year.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Leon Smith resigned as an assistant director of championships at the national office ... Debbie Russell resigned as a Stay in Bounds program development coordinator at the NCAA ... Colin Chappell was hired as a programmer analyst II at the national office. Chappell formerly was a member of the national office staff before assuming his most recent position as a senior systems analyst at Eli Lilly.

AGREEMENTS

Fox Sports and the SBC Cotton Bowl Classic announced an agreement to extend their partnership by four years through January 1, 2006. Fox enters its fourth year as a television partner with the bowl, which will feature teams from the Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences.

NOTABLES

Former Minnesota coach Roy Griak was selected for induction into the U.S. Track Coaches Hall of Fame. Griak guided the men's cross country and track and field teams from 1963 to 1996. During his tenure, the school captured Big Ten cross country titles in 1964 and 1969.

DEATHS

Art Skipper, former javelin thrower at Oregon, died in a small plane crash recently. He was 31. At Oregon, Skipper was a two-time all-American and earned a national championship in the javelin in 1992.

Former Texas Lutheran golfer John Bohmann died October 16. He was 54. Bohmann was a three-time all-American at Texas Lutheran from 1967 to 1969, where he also played basketball. He went on to compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship on multiple occasions and played in the Masters tournament in 1969 and 1970.

Verl "Jiggs" Westergard, a former coach and teacher at Texas Lutheran, died October 4. Westergard, 79, led the football, basketball and golf programs at the school from 1959 to 1987.

Jill Lucus, a volleyball player at Tusculum, died October 24 of injuries sustained in a traffic accident. She was 21. The senior business management major was a four-year starter and a two-time all-South Atlantic Conference selection.
