St. Mary's (Maryland) chooses lacrosse coach

St. Mary's (Maryland) hired Jayme Block as head men's lacrosse coach. Block succeeds Jason Hurley, who resigned.

During the 2000-01 academic year, Block worked as head men's coach at Hamilton. He also fulfilled assistant football coaching responsibilities at the school. Before his tenure at Hamilton, Block was an assistant men's lacrosse coach at Salisbury State from 1998 to 2000 in a program that made three appearances in the NCAA Division III national semifinals and captured a national championship in 1999.

Block competed on the men's lacrosse team at Salisbury State from 1994 to 1997. He helped the squad earn national championships in 1994 and 1995. The 1997 graduate of the school has a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in education, also from Salisbury State.

GENERAL

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Audrey Forbes Manley announced plans to retire as president at Spelman, effective in July 2002 ... Northland's Robert Rue Parsonage announced retirement plans, effective in June 2002 ... Pamela S. Lewis was named as president at Queens (North Carolina). Lewis, dean of the school's McColl School of Business since April 2000, replaces Billy O. Wireman, who is scheduled to retire June 30, 2002.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Cortland State hired Robert D. McBee as director of athletics, succeeding Lee Roberts, who retired in December 2000, and interim athletics director Joan Sitterly. McBee has been athletics director at Midwestern State since May 1997 ... Providence chose Robert Driscoll as athletics director ... Peter Dalis announced plans to retire as athletics director at UCLA , effective June 30, 2002. Dalis has been athletics director at the school for 18 years.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

San Francisco State hired Tracy Cumming as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director for compliance. Cumming has served as associate athletics director, compliance coordinator and senior woman administrator at Clarion.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
OF ATHLETICS

Scott Roy was chosen as an assistant athletics director for external affairs at Rhode Island College.

COACHES

Baseball -- Southwest Texas State signed head coach Ty Harrington to a three-year contract.

Men's basketball -- Billy Tubbs resigned as head coach at Texas Christian, effective at the end of the season. Tubbs has guided the program to a 140-80 record in seven seasons.

Men's basketball assistant -- Chris Highfield was chosen as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida Gulf Coast. Most recently, Highfield has been an assistant at Saint Joseph's (Indiana).

Women's basketball assistants -- Central (Iowa) appointed Josh Harrington as an assistant coach. Harrington is a 2000 graduate of the school and also competed on the school's men's basketball squad for two seasons ... Heather Schaffner was added as an assistant coach at Bernard Baruch.

Football -- Virginia State's Lou Anderson announced plans to retire as head coach at the end of the season. Anderson has led the program for 11 years and currently has a record of 65-43 ... Walter Barr, head coach at Shenandoah, announced his retirement, effective at the end of the season ... Clark Atlanta's Curtis Crockett resigned as head coach. Crockett was in his second season as head coach. The school appointed Kevin Gray as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Gray has been defensive coordinator with the program ... Tom Holmoe resigned as head coach at California. Holmoe has guided the program for five years ... Kansas released Terry Allen as head coach after more than four seasons. Tom Hayes, defensive coordinator and secondary coach, was named as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Maine hired Campbell Blair as an assistant men's coach to replace Tim Whitehead, who was elevated to interim head coach after the death of Shawn Walsh. For the past six seasons, Blair has worked as an assistant coach, head coach and general manager of Victoria Salsa, a British Columbia Junior Hockey League team.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Rob Quinn was named as head men's coach at Colby. For the past seven years, Quinn has served as head men's lacrosse coach and assistant athletics director at New England.

Men's and women's skiing -- Bates named Rogan Connell as head Alpine coach, succeeding Ric Mackey, who resigned in September. Since 1999, Connell has worked as director of skiing at St. Michael's.

Women's soccer -- Carleton's Bo Conroy resigned as head coach. Conroy has led the program since before the 2000 season ... George Fox announced head coach Byron Shenk was stepping down after guiding the program to a 96-87-11 record in 11 years.

Softball -- Germaine Fairchild was appointed as head coach at Quinnipiac ... Redlands hired Amanda Peterson as head coach. Since August 2000, Peterson has served as a graduate assistant at the school ... Ricci Woodard, head coach at Southwest Texas State, signed a three-year contract.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Kelly Byrne was selected as interim swimming coach for the 2001-02 season at Western Illinois ... Pfeiffer chose Erin Domenech as director of swimming and head women's swimming coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- John Smith resigned after 17 years as an assistant coach at UCLA, effective November 30, to assume full-time responsibilities with HSInternational, an organization that trains track and field athletes ... George Mason added Emanuel Jackson as an assistant men's coach. Jackson, who succeeds Robby Farias, has been coaching at Mary Washington and at CD Hylton (Virginia) High School.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Shannon Elliott resigned as head coach at Delaware. Elliott was in her second season as head coach. Sue Stauffer was selected as interim head women's coach at the school for the rest of the season. Stauffer has been a part-time assistant coach with the program ... Texas-San Antonio chose Rhonda Rust as interim head women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Melissa McLinden resigned as an assistant coach at Delaware. McLinden was a part-time assistant during the 2000 season and has been a full-time assistant since July 2001.

Wrestling -- Chattanooga's Mark Leen resigned as head coach. The school chose Franky James to fulfill head coaching duties on an interim basis.

STAFF

Media relations assistants -- East Carolina hired Natasha J. Parker as assistant director of media relations. During the past year, Parker has been an assistant sports information director at Niagara ... Cathy Bongiovi was hired as assistant media relations director at Virginia. For the past four years, Bongiovi has served as assistant athletics media relations director at Penn State.

Sports information -- Todd Bunnell was selected as sports information director at Mississippi University for Women. Bunnell succeeds Bobby Galinsky.

Sports information assistant -- Mount St. Mary's added Jason Brennan as an assistant sports information director to succeed Cesar Mesa. Brennan has been an assistant box office event coordinator at the Washington, D.C., Sports and Entertainment Commission.

CONFERENCES

The Eastern College Athletic Conference hired Sarah Hood as assistant commissioner for women's ice hockey. Hood has been an account executive with Stauch Vetromile & Mitchell Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations in Rhode Island.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Jeramy Michiaels was hired as assistant director, Internet and new media administration at the national office. Michiaels has been a product manager at Quokka Sports, Inc. (formerly Total Sports).

NOTABLES

The following track and field coaches have been elected as 2001 inductees to the United States Coaches Association Hall of Fame: Roy Griak, Minnesota; Harry Groves, Penn State; Barbara Jacket, Prairie View; Mel Rosen, Auburn; Clyde Hart, Baylor.

DEATHS

Thomas Folliard, former basketball coach, died September 29. Folliard guided programs at Florida Tech, Bryant and Stonehill.

Jim Verdieck, head tennis coach at Redlands from 1946-1984, died of a heart attack October 29. During his 38-year tenure, Verdieck built a record of 921-281 and captured 34 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's Hall of Fame inductee earned 15 team national championships, including 11 NAIA and three NCAA Division III titles. Verdieck also was head football coach at the school from 1953 to 1958, compiling a mark of 36-21-2, including a 10-0 season in 1956.

Mike Lints, an assistant track coach at Grand Valley State, died recently in an automobile accident. Lints worked with sprinters.

Georgia State men's basketball player Andre Tooks died October 31 after sustaining injuries in a car accident. Tooks, a two-year junior college transfer from Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College, was scheduled to play for Georgia State this season.

Former athletics coach and administrator Bob Woodruff died November 1. He was 85. Woodruff served as athletics director at Tennessee from 1963 to 1985, and also worked as head football coach at Baylor from 1947 to 1949 and at Florida from 1950 to 1959. He formerly was an assistant football coach at Army and Georgia Tech.

Art Guepe, former head football coach at Vanderbilt, died November 3 at the age of 86. Guepe coached the Commodores from 1953 to 1962. He also was head coach at Virginia from 1947 to 1952 and worked as commissioner at the Ohio Valley Conference from 1963 to 1972.
