Gwynn and Johnson take intercollegiate posts

Tony Gwynn, a 20-year Major League Baseball (MLB) veteran, and Davey Johnson, former MLB player and manager, have accepted positions within intercollegiate athletics.

Gwynn was named as head baseball coach at San Diego State, effective June 1, 2002. Gwynn will succeed Jim Dietz, who announced plans to retire after the upcoming season, his 31st as head coach.

Gwynn is retiring from professional baseball after spending the past 20 years as a member of MLB's San Diego Padres. In addition, Gwynn has been selected as Most Valuable Player seven times and chosen as a member of the National League all-star team 15 times.

Gwynn was a two-sport standout at San Diego State. He competed with the baseball team from 1979 to 1981, earning recognition as an all-American in 1981. As a point guard on the basketball team for four seasons (1977 to 1981), Gwynn established the school's single-season and career assists records with 221 and 590, respectively.

Johnson, meanwhile, has been hired as special assistant to the director of athletics at Rollins. He spent 13 seasons as a second baseman with MLB's Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs. He helped the Orioles capture two World Series championships in addition to earning three Gold Glove defensive awards and making four all-star appearances during his career.

In 1984, Johnson assumed responsibilities as manager of the New York Mets. His squads won one World Series championship and two division championships in six full seasons under his guidance. Johnson also completed managerial tenures with the Cincinnati Reds (1993-95), Baltimore Orioles (1996-97) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1999-00). In 14 seasons as a Major League manager, the Texas A&M graduate built a 1,148-888 record and was named American League manager of the year in 1997.
