Pruitt announces plans to retire at Ohio

Peggy Pruitt has announced plans to retire as senior woman administrator and senior associate athletics director for internal operations at Ohio, effective June 30.

Pruitt was hired at Ohio in 1975 as coordinator of women's athletics and head field hockey and head tennis coach. She was elevated to associate athletics director three years later and named senior associate athletics director in 1993. Pruitt coached field hockey until 1977, and tennis until 1982.

Throughout her tenure, Pruitt has worked with various NCAA, Mid-American Conference and National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators committees. Before joining Ohio, Pruitt completed stints as head tennis coach at Illinois and as head field hockey, volleyball and basketball coach at Nazareth.

Pruitt, a 1965 graduate of Kentucky with a bachelor's degree in health, physical education and recreation, earned a master's degree in physical education at Kentucky in 1969 and a doctorate in physical education administration in 1976 at Illinois.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Hugh C. Bailey, president at Valdosta State, announced plans to retire, effective June 30 ... Loras President Joachim Froehlich will become president at College of Our Lady of the Elms, effective July 1 ... Jean F. MacCormack was named as chancellor at Massachusetts-Dartmouth. MacCormack has been serving as interim chancellor ... Babson President Leo I. Higdon Jr. resigned, effective in June ... Lorna Duphiney Edmundson was selected as president at Wilson. Edmundson succeeds Gwendolyn Evans Jensen, who will retire June 30.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Chuck Bell, athletics director at San Jose State, was awarded a five-year contract extension through 2005. Bell has held the position since February 1998 ... Dennis Roland resigned as athletics director and head football coach at Southwest Baptist. Roland, who has been athletics director since November 1998 and head football coach for the past three seasons, will assume duties as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Kentucky ... Fort Lewis elevated Dave Preszler to acting director of athletics. Preszler, an assistant athletics director since November 1995, succeeds Joel R. Smith ... Gene Bright resigned as athletics director at Morris Brown. Bright has held the position since May 1995.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Jenny Warmack-Chipman was promoted to senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director at Muhlenberg. Warmack-Chipman, who succeeds the retired Connie Kunda, will continue as head women's volleyball coach, a position she has held for one season.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

St. John's (New York) promoted Charlie Elwood to senior associate athletics director; Mary Pat Beirne to associate athletics director, development and life skills; Alex Evans to associate athletics director; Dominic Scianna to associate athletics director, communications; Erin McDonnell to associate athletics director, facilities and recreational sports; and Ann Kiley to associate athletics director, business ... Phil Kozera was named as associate athletics director at Humboldt State. Kozera has fulfilled similar duties at Nebraska-Kearney.

St. John's (New York) promoted Ron Linfonte to assistant athletics director for sports medicine and elevated Todd Gershwin to assistant athletics director, marketing ... Cal Poly chose Fred Smith as assistant athletics director for advancement ... Pace selected Maura Keenan as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions.

COACHES

Baseball -- Jacksonville State's Rudy Abbott announced plans to retire as head coach after this season ... Paul Solberg, head coach at Luther for 24 years, will retire at the end of the 2000-01 academic year.

Men's basketball -- Utah head coach Rick Majerus will miss the rest of the season for health concerns ... Jeff Schneider resigned as head coach at Cal Poly. Associate head coach Kevin Bromley was elevated to interim head coach.

Men's basketball assistant -- Belmont Abbey hired Tony Atkins as an assistant coach. Atkins succeeds Greg Ray.

Women's basketball assistant -- Jeremiah Henry was appointed as an assistant at Fredonia State.

Men's and women's cross country -- Carthage promoted Brett Witt to head men's coach.

Football -- West Georgia chose Gary Otten as head coach ... Tommy Lee assumed head coaching duties at Western Montana ... Bob DeBesse, head coach at Southwest Texas, signed a three-year contract ... Morris Brown appointed Gary Harper as interim head coach. Harper, who replaces Joe Crosby, has been an assistant with the program since 1996 ... Phillip Fulmer, head coach at Tennessee since 1992, signed a two-year contract extension through 2007 ... Otterbein appointed Paul Alt as head coach ... Jim Tressel was hired as head coach at Ohio State. Tressel has guided Youngstown State to four NCAA Division
I-AA national championships in 15 seasons and formerly was an Ohio State assistant coach from 1983 to 1986 ... Olivet appointed interim head coach Kevin Bozeman as head coach, replacing Dallas Hilliar. Bozeman spent the 1999 season as an assistant coach for offensive backs at the school ... Tim Pendergast was hired as head coach at Cornell. Succeeding Pete Mangurian, Pendergast has served as head coach at Hamilton since January 2000 ... Arnold F. Rutgers appointed Mario Cristobal as offensive tackles and tight ends coach ... Men's and women's ice hockey -- Mike Sertich was named as head men's coach at Michigan Tech. Sertich, who has been serving as interim head coach of the program, was head coach at Minnesota-Duluth from 1982 to 2000.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Salve Regina added Brad Kingman as head men's coach ... Philadelphia U. added Nick Vattiato as head women's coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants-- David Kingman was awarded duties as assistant men's coach at Salve Regina ... Guilford appointed Tanya Tanhehco as an assistant women's coach. Tanhehco, a 2000 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan, was a four-year lacrosse letter-winner and three-time all-North Coast Athletic Conference honoree.

Men's soccer -- UC Irvine awarded head coach George Kuntz a two-year contract extension. This past season, Kuntz, who has guided the program for six seasons, was selected as coach of the year for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's Pacific Division ... Bobby Clark was chosen as head coach at Notre Dame ... Cal State Fullerton awarded head coach Al Mistri a four-year contract extension.

Women's soccer -- Christopher Baker resigned as head coach at Simmons, effective February 2. Baker closes a four-season stint with a 45-31-1 mark ... Tara Bilanski was named as head coach at Portland State ... New Jersey City awarded the head coaching post to Ted Flogaites, replacing Kelly McCraken. Most recently, Flogaites has worked as head boys' coach at the high-school level ... Ali Khosroshahin assumed duties as interim head coach at Cal State Fullerton ... San Jose State hired Tamie Grimes as head coach. Grimes was an assistant with the program for two seasons before serving as interim head coach during the 2000 season.

Women's soccer assistants -- Lisa Romoser was named as an assistant coach at Carthage ... New Jersey City hired Amanda Cobb as an assistant. Cobb, a 2000 graduate of New Jersey City, set the NCAA single-season mark for saves with 371 as goalkeeper for the women's soccer team.

Softball -- Lori Brown was selected as head coach at Elmhurst. Brown has been head softball and head volleyball coach at Agnes Scott for two years.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Luther announced Jay McGrew, head men's coach for the past 18 years, and Kay McGrew, head women's coach for the past 16 years, will retire at the end of the 2000-01 academic year.

Men's and women's tennis -- Drew Barrett was appointed as head men's coach at Bradley to replace Byron Rabb, who resigned after four years. Most recently, Barrett has been an assistant tennis professional at Wheaton Sports Left. Interim head coach Sheryl Sattler will become head women's coach at the school ... Northern Arizona added Steve Bickham as head coach. Bickham has been co-director of the Donnelly-Bickham Junior Tennis Program in Scottsdale, Arizona, for the past two years.

Men's and women's track and field -- George Mason awarded contract extensions to head men's coach Dalton Ebanks and head women's coach Angie Taylor through the 2002-03 season. Ebanks is in his fourth season and Taylor is entering her second ... Gene Newman was appointed as head women's track and field and cross country coach at Richard Stockton.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Gregg Huckstadt was chosen as head men's coach at Dominican. Huckstadt most recently has worked as a head varsity boys' volleyball coach at the high-school level ... George Mason extended the contract of head women's coach Pat Kendrick through the 2003 season. Kendrick has guided the program for 16 seasons and has an overall record of 301-228 ... East Tennessee State's Kim Tibbitts announced plans to retire as head women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Clemson named Karen Weatherington as assistant women's coach.

Wrestling -- Brian Shaffer agreed to a three-year contract through the 2002-03 season as head coach at George Mason. In six seasons, Shaffer has led the program to two Colonial Athletic Association championships ... Tony Cipollone was chosen as head coach at Mercyhurst. Cipollone has served as head coach at Muskingum since the 1995-96 season.

STAFF

Athletic trainer -- Edgewood added Brett Hand as head athletic trainer/fitness Left director. Most recently, Hand has worked as head athletic trainer and instructor in the health and physical education department at Union (New York).

Assistant athletic trainer -- Kathleen M. Pomichter was chosen as an assistant athletic trainer at Fredonia State.

Business manager -- St. John's (New York) elevated Greg Casey to business manager.

Development -- Montana hired Dan Ingram as assistant director of the Grizzly Athletic Association, succeeding Jim O'Day ... George Van Horne was selected as director of athletics development at Akron, succeeding Katie Bame. Van Horne has been with the school since March 2000, serving as director of athletics compliance/events manager.

Sports information -- William Paterson appointed Thomas Borowski as sports information director ... Southwest Baptist hired Joey Roberts as sports information director. Roberts is a 1999 graduate of Abilene Christian, where he has spent the past five and a half years in the sports information office, including the past year and a half as a graduate assistant.

Strength and conditioning -- Dave Van Halanger was chosen as director of strength and conditioning at Georgia ... North Carolina selected Jeff Connors as strength and conditioning coordinator ... Corey Goff was named as strength and conditioning coach at Muhlenberg. During the 2000 season, Goff was football special teams coordinator and offensive line coach.

CONFERENCES

The Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference hired Melissa Benedict as sports information director. Benedict replaces Terry Logue.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association appointed A.J. Morgan as assistant to the commissioner.

ASSOCIATIONS

The American Baseball Coaches Association elected the following individuals as officers: Sonny Pittaro, Rider, president; Tom O'Connell, Burlington Catholic Central (Wisconsin), first vice-president; David Altopp, Lee University, second vice-president; Danny Hall, Georgia Tech, third vice-president; Irish O'Reilly, Lewis, fourth vice-president. The organization also re-elected Carroll Land, director of athletics at Point Loma Nazarene University, to another three-year term as chair of the board of directors.

Referee Enterprises, Inc., elevated Bill Topp to editorial director. Topp has been with the organization for 10 years and also serves as an official for NCAA Division I baseball as well as high-school and small college football and basketball. Referee Enterprises, Inc., publishes Referee magazine and manages the National Association of Sports Officials.

CORRECTION

The January 15 article on Division II Convention legislation incorrectly stated the membership's action on Proposal No. 14. The membership adopted the proposal.

NOTABLES

Michelle Akers, the recently retired member of the U.S. Women's Soccer National Team, was named the recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Women's Committee Award of Excellence. Akers, who in December was selected as the female player of the century by FIFA, has 153 international match appearances, two World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal.

Boston College head men's hockey coach Jerry York was selected as USA Hockey's 2000 National Coach of the Year. York has led the program at Boston College since 1994 and has earned more than 600 career wins.

Greichaly Cepero, a sophomore volleyball player at Nebraska, was named as a Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport in the 2000-01 collegiate year. Cepero, a first-team all-America selection who helped Nebraska to a 34-0 season and the 2000 NCAA Division I national championship, earned recognition as the American Volleyball Coaches Association and Big 12 Conference player of the year.

The following coaches were selected as National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas National Coach of the Year honorees: Division I men -- Ray Reid, Connecticut; women -- Jillian Ellis, UCLA. Division II men -- Joe Flanagan, Cal State Dominguez Hills; women -- Mike Munch, North Florida. Division III men -- Dave Brandt, Messiah; women -- Martha Whiting, Tufts.

DEATHS

Former Buffalo State athletics administrator and coach Howard B. MacAdam died December 24. MacAdam, 76, joined the Buffalo State staff in 1961 as athletics director and head basketball coach. MacAdam, who retired in 1985, also served as head golf coach for nine seasons and head tennis coach for two.
