Amstutz elevated to head coach at Toledo

 Toledo has promoted Tom Amstutz to head football coach. Amstutz, a longtime assistant with the program, succeeds Gary Pinkel.

Amstutz joined the Toledo coaching staff as defensive ends coach in 1977, a position he held until 1986. He spent from 1987 to 1989 as outside linebackers coach at Navy before returning to Toledo as outside linebackers coach in 1990. Amstutz has served as Toledo's defensive coordinator since 1994 and was appointed assistant head coach in 1999.

A two-year starter as a football student-athlete at Toledo, Amstutz competed at the offensive guard spot. He earned a bachelor of education degree in physical education and sociology from Toledo in 1977. Amstutz, who has conducted various football clinics throughout Ohio and Michigan, also has completed work on a master's degree in athletics administration.


 

GENERAL

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Cortland State chose Joan Sitterly, head women's volleyball coach since 1983, as interim athletics director. Sitterly, who has spent the past year working as interim associate director of athletics, succeeds the retired Lee Roberts ... William J. Cleary Jr. announced plans to retire as director of athletics at Harvard, effective June 30, 2001. Cleary has held the position since February 14, 1990, and formerly spent 19 seasons as head men's ice hockey coach at the school.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Vermont tabbed Sue Marsland as senior woman administrator and assistant director of athletics. Marsland, who succeeds Sally Guerette, has been director of athletics academic services at Western Michigan.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Robert Andrey was selected as assistant athletics director for business operations at American. Most recently, Andrey has worked as director of ticket operations and community relations at Temple ... Buffalo State elevated Terry Beattie to assistant athletics director for facilities. Beattie has been athletics facilities coordinator ... Jeff Konya was hired as assistant athletics director for compliance and student affairs at Bucknell ... Tami Matheny, head tennis coach at South Carolina-Spartanburg, was elevated to assistant athletics director for compliance. Matheny will retain head coaching responsibilities ... Howard Pachasa resigned as assistant athletics director for sports information and public relations at Rutgers-Newark. Pachasa has held the position since 1995 ... Texas Tech named Chris Cook as assistant athletics director for media relations ... Wayne State (Michigan) selected Jason Clark as assistant athletics director ... John Stallings assumed duties as assistant athletics director for sports information and public relations at Rutgers-Newark.

COACHES

Baseball -- King's (Pennsylvania) added Chip Sorber as head coach, succeeding Al Brogna. From 1996 to 1998, Sorber was head coach at the high-school level ... Stevens Tech named John Crane as head coach. Most recently, Crane has served as an assistant coach at Monmouth.

Baseball assistants -- Nicholls State chose Tommy Cimino as an assistant ... St. Francis (New York) appointed Tommy Weber as an assistant coach.

Men's basketball -- UNLV released head coach Bill Bayno ... Charles G. "Lefty" Driesell, Georgia State's head coach, was awarded a new three-year contract through 2004. Driesell is in his fourth year at the school.

Men's basketball assistants -- Kendrick Saunders and Nick Plevritis were added as assistants at Hunter. The school also appointed Dean Meminger as program consultant ... Bucknell tabbed Bryan Goodman as an assistant to replace Terry Conrad, who became head coach at Lycoming.

Women's basketball -- South Florida released head women's basketball coach Jerry Ann Winters. The school awarded head coaching duties to Jose Fernandez through the 2001-02 season.

Women's basketball assistants -- Danielle Dawson was chosen as an assistant coach at Monmouth ... Hunter selected Suzette Henry, Freddy DeJesus and Cardell Taylor as assistants. Dean Meminger also was chosen as program consultant ... Sewanee (University of the South) added Karen Booker as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's fencing assistant -- Tiberiu Sala was named as an assistant coach at Hunter.

Football -- Fort Hays State's Jeff Leiker resigned as head coach. The school selected Tim O'Connor as Leiker's successor ... Rocky Long, head coach at New Mexico, was awarded a three-year contract extension ... Ohio promoted Brian Knorr to head coach to succeed Jim Grobe. Knorr has been an assistant with the program since 1995, including having served as defensive coordinator for the past two seasons ... San Jose State hired Fitz Hill as head coach. For the past 11 seasons, Hill has worked as wide receivers coach, defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Arkansas ... Randy Pippin was named as head coach at West Alabama ... North Carolina hired John Bunting as head coach. Bunting, who has been linebackers coach with the NFL's New Orleans Saints, succeeds Carl Torbush ... Jim Grobe assumed duties as head coach at Wake Forest, succeeding Jim Caldwell. Since 1995, Grobe has served as head coach at Ohio ... Pete Carroll was hired as head coach at Southern California. Carroll, who succeeds Paul Hackett, was formerly head coach of the NFL's New York Jets and New England Patriots ... Joe Reich was hired as head coach at Wingate. Reich, who was defensive coordinator at Buffalo, replaces Bob Brush ... Georgia Tech signed football coach George O'Leary to a six-year contract extension ... Donavon Larson was chosen as head coach at Hamline ... Iowa State signed head coach Dan McCarney to a four-year contract ... Clint Conque, head coach at Central Arkansas, was awarded a contract extension through the 2004 season.

Football assistants -- Rutgers added Darrell Hazell as wide receivers coach and Joe Susan as offensive line coach ... Dan O'Dell was selected as an assistant at Bucknell ... Findlay appointed Tony Smith as strength and conditioning coordinator and assistant football coach. Smith has been assistant strength, speed and conditioning coach at Clemson since 1999 ... Alabama selected Carl Torbush as defensive coordinator ... Arizona State named Tom Osborne as an assistant coach ... Boise State added Romeo Bandison as defensive line coach ... Jim Knowles assumed defensive coordinator duties and Bill Lazor was selected as quarterbacks coach at Buffalo ... Southern California named DeWayne Walker as secondary coach ... Scott Pelleur was appointed as special teams coordinator and Jay Boulware was appointed as tight ends coach at Arizona ... Riley Murry Jr., offensive coordinator, and Tyrone Jones, defensive coordinator, were released as assistants at Alcorn State ... Boise State chose Kent Riddle as running backs and special teams coach ... Florida's Rod Broadway resigned as defensive line coach to take the same position at North Carolina ... Tom Brattan was appointed as offensive line coach at Maryland ... Buffalo added Thomas Woods as wide receivers coach. Woods has fulfilled the same duties at Western Carolina for the past four years. The school also announced defensive backfield and safeties coach Tom Jones will remain as a defensive assistant coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Ron Lucas was hired as head men's coach at Robert Morris, replacing Joe Karlik ... Audra Alumbaugh was selected as head women's coach at Central Arkansas.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Buffalo State formally appointed Jim Fowler as head men's coach/ice arena manager. Fowler is in his fifth season at the school.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Steve Colfer was chosen as assistant men's coach at Cabrini. Colfer succeeds Pat Scarpello, who became an assistant at Delaware.

Women's soccer -- Colleen Marcum resigned after four seasons as head coach at Kent. The school promoted assistant Rob Marinaro to head coach. Marinaro has served as an assistant with the program for the past four years ... Michael Coll was appointed as head coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania) ... Penn State elevated assistant coach Paula Wilkins to head coach ... Anderson (Indiana) head coach Art Leak resigned. Leak has guided the program since its establishment in 1993. Scott Fridley, head men's soccer coach at the school for the past seven seasons, was selected as Leak's successor ... Tina Conley was hired as head coach at Central Arkansas.

Softball -- Shenandoah added Ellie Tanner as head softball and head women's volleyball coach. Tanner, a 2000 graduate of the school, replaces Dave McGuigan as softball coach and Vanessa Eddinger as volleyball coach ... Jim Murnane was chosen as head softball coach and intramural director at Utica.

Men's and women's swimming -- Nebraska head coach Cal Bentz announced plans to retire as head coach. Bentz has guided the program for 24 years. Assistant coach Paul Nelsen was named as interim head coach.

Men's and women's swimming assistants -- Delon Callender and Seda Bahtiyar assumed duties as assistant coaches at Hunter ... Rick Paine and Keith Moore resigned as associate head coach and assistant coach, respectively, at Nebraska.

Men's and women's tennis -- Colby-Sawyer's Marty Perry resigned as men's and women's coach ... Saint Anselm hired Roberta C. Cullity as head men's and women's coach to replace Brigitte Bressler ... Phil Birnbaum was hired as head women's coach at Richard Stockton. The program will begin competition next year. Birnbaum has been head professional and director of the Ocean City (New Jersey) community tennis program.

Men's and women's track and field -- Tom Appenheimer was chosen as interim head coach at Buffalo State.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Paul Allen and Selvin Cruz were selected as indoor assistants at Hunter.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Ryan Dehnel accepted responsibilities as head coach at Ausgburg.

Wrestling assistants -- Drexel named Joe Melchiore as an assistant coach ... Paul Austin and Mohammed Tavakolian were named as assistants at Hunter.

STAFF

Academic services -- Dale Kuhl assumed additional duties as academic coordinator at South Carolina-Spartanburg. Kuhl will continue as assistant men's basketball coach.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Fairleigh Dickinson named James Reidy as an assistant athletic trainer ... Melissa Montanaro was appointed as basketball trainer at Citadel ... Buffalo State selected Sean Roberts as assistant athletic trainer/strength and conditioning coordinator. Roberts has been with the school since August 1998. The school also announced Anita Williams as an assistant athletic trainer. Williams has been working at the University Sports Medicine Institute in Buffalo, New York.

Business manager -- Fairleigh Dickinson added Leslie Ramos as athletics business manager.

Equipment managers -- Towson hired Dion Harris as athletics equipment manager ... Buffalo State named Brent Ford as equipment manager, events manager and aquatics director.

Marketing/promotions -- South Carolina-Spartanburg awarded Mark Perdue with additional duties as promotions coordinator. Perdue will continue to serve as assistant athletics director for sports medicine.

Sports information -- Saint Anselm's Ken Belbin resigned as sports information director to assume duties as director of public relations at Albertus Magnus. Belbin has served as sports information director at Saint Anselm for five years.

Sports information assistant -- Nicholls State chose Peter Van Blaricom as assistant sports information director. Van Blaricom is a May 2000 graduate of Monmouth.

Sports medicine assistant -- Will Sells resigned as assistant director of sports medicine and basketball trainer at Citadel.

Strength and conditioning -- Brent Cates resigned as strength and conditioning coach at Chattanooga.

CONFERENCES

The Atlantic 10 Conference named James Maconaghy as supervisor of football officials ... Amy Haworth was chosen as director of compliance and senior woman administrator at the Big South Conference. Haworth has been assistant director of athletics at American International.

AGREEMENTS

Russell Athletics will sponsor the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Coach of the Year Award through 2002. The Russell Athletic/WBCA Coach of the Year Award will be given to one coach each in NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA and junior college/community college divisions as well as at the high-school level.

 

NOTABLES

Kara Grgas-Wheeler, cross country runner at Colorado, was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the top female collegiate athlete in her sport for the 2000-01 year. Grgas-Wheeler, a senior, captured the individual title at the NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championships.

Lin Loring, head women's tennis coach at Indiana, was presented with the Rolex/ITA Meritorious Service award recognizing Loring's extraordinary contributions to collegiate tennis. Loring, who has served on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Board of Directors and presently is a member of its women's operating committee, is the most-victorious Division I women's tennis coach with 587 career wins in 23 years at Indiana and four years at UC Santa Barbara.

Senior Old Dominion field hockey player Marina DiGiacomo was named as the 2000 Honda Award winner as the top female collegiate player in her sport for the 2000-01 year. DiGiacomo, who helped Old Dominion win the 2000 national championship, led the nation in scoring and assists and was the Colonial Athletic Association player of the year.

 

DEATHS

A.J. Cohen, a football player at Dayton, died December 10. Cohen, 21, was a senior wide receiver majoring in economics.
